Singapore By Christian Berker Arrival Es wird ein mindestens 6 Monate gültiger Reisepass für das Touristenvisum benötigt. Dieses gibt es on Arrival. Die „Immigration Card“ am besten im Flieger schon komplett ausfüllen, so dass man schneller am Schalter ist, so lassen sich evtl. 30 Minuten Wartezeit vermeiden. Immer den gelben „Arrival“ Schildern folgen. Den Hinweisen auf der Immigration Card bzgl. Zigaretten (nur ein angefangenes Päckchen), Alkohol, Drogen (Kaugummis bin ich mir nicht sicher) sollten definitiv beachtet werden! Drei Möglichkeiten, um vom Changi Airport in die Stadt zu kommen: 1. Bahn (MRT) befindet sich in Untergeschoss von Terminal 2. Den MRT Schildern folgen. Am Schalter die EZ-Link Karte (sprich: easyLink) kaufen und aufladen (am Schlater oder am Automat) und mit der grünen EW-Linie Richtung Joo Koon fahren. Kosten: einmalig 5 SGD für die EZ-Link Karte plus Prepaidbetrag. 2. Taxi: Einfach den gelben Schilder „Taxi“ folgen und einweisen lassen, welche Nummer man nehmen darf. Kosten ca. 28 SGD (5 SGD Airport Charge, 3 SGD first kilometer charge, Rest Strecke) 3. Man hat einen Shuttelservice vom Hotel General Es wir mit Singapore Dollars (SGD) bezahlt. In Singapore wird im Gegensatz zum Rest von Asien nicht verhandelt (außer an drei Orten: SimLim Square, China Town und Orchard Towers). Alle Preise sind überall ausgeschrieben. Trinkgeld kann man geben, muss man aber nicht. Geld wechseln kann man am besten und günstigsten bei Money Changern, die sich quer durch die Stadt verteilen, oder an einem Geldautomat Geld ziehen. Telefonieren und SMS schreiben ist recht günstig ca. 0,09 SGD(natürlich nur mit einer lokale SIM-Karte). Man kauft sich am besten eine Prepaid-Karte von SingTel oder StarHub. Kosten der ersten Karte ungefähr 28 SGD (inkl. 20 SGD Guthaben). Danach nur noch aufladen. Man benötigt seinen Reisepass für den Erwerb einer SIM-Karte. Diese können in jedem 7-11 oder Cheers (Kiosk/Conveniet-Store) gekauft werden. Für alle die Smartphones benutzen: Nahezu überall kann man ins Netz. Voraussetzungen kenne ich nicht, da ich selbst keins habe und benutzt habe... Es ist völlig normal in Singapore, dass sich Warteschlangen bilden, insbesondere vor Restaurants und an Taxiständen. Man sollte versuchen so viel Sightseeing wie nur geht an Wochentage zu erledigen, da Singaporeans am Wochende auch was unternehmen wollen. D.h. knapp 5 Millionen Menschen (Touristen nicht eingerechnet) verteilen sich auf Attraktionen wie Zoo, Sentosa, Pulau Ubin, Orchard Road etc. Wetter: Es ist immer zwischen 27 und 32 Grad. Da jedoch die Luftfeuchtigkeit bei 90% aufwärts liegt (je nachdem, wann es das letztemal geregnet hat) fühlt es sich an wie 37-40 Grad. Da innerhalb von Minuten auf blauem Himmel und Sonnenschein tropischer Regen folgen kann bietet es sich an einen kleinen Schirm immer dabei zu haben. Singapore liegt ca. 100km nordlich des Äquators, die Sonneneinstrahlung ist entsprechend hoch, deshalb sollte man bei längeren Aufenthalten im freien immer Sonnencreme auftragen, Lichtschutzfaktor 30 aufwärts. Vom längeren „sonnen“ würde ich bei unvorgebräunter Haut trotz hohem Lichtschutzfaktor dringends abraten! Trotz des warmen Klimas sollte man Jeans und langärmlige Sachen mitnehmen, denn in Singapore ist bis auf Coffee Shops ausnahmslos jedes Gebäude und Fahrzeug klimatisiert, teilweise unnütz und unangenehm stark. Ein 17 Grad kalter Luftstrom in der MRT ist keine Seltenheit. Insbesondere wenn man geschwitzt ist (und das fällt recht leicht bei 90% Luftfeuchtigkeit) und in eine klimatisierte Shopping Mall oder MRT steigt, kann man sich schnell erkälten! Getting around Man kommt überall mit der MRT, dem Bus und im Notfall dem Taxi hin. Für die MRT und die Busse ist es am einfachsten man erwirbt eine EZ-Link-Karte. Man muss dann nur noch beim Betreten und Verlassen der MRT Station oder Bus die Karte „tappen“ und der Preis wird automatisch abgebucht (inkl. Umsteigen). Vergünstigungen gibt es auf die Fahrpreise, wenn man Bahn und Bus kombiniert. In Taxis kann man immer mit Cash bezahlen, oft (aber nicht immer) auch mit Kreditkarte. Oftmals sogar auch mit der EZ-Link-Karte. Vorher fragen bzw. Auf die Schilder an den Seitentüren des Taxis schauen! Am einachsten ist es, man holt sich eine MRT Network Map an einer der MRT Stationen oder druckt sie sich hier aus: http://www.smrt.com.sg/trains/network_map.asp Die MRT fährt von ca. 7 Uhr morgens bis 23:40 Uhr abends. In der Rush Hour alle 2 Minuten, sonst alle 5 Minuten. Busse fahren alle 15 bis 30 Minuten (je Linie). Welcher Bus wo hinfährt ist am Anfang nicht allzuleicht zu verstehen, aber wenn man weiß, welchen Bus man nehmen muss, kann man hier nachschauen wann der nächste kommt: http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/iris/nextbus.aspx Einfach auf irisNext Bus klicken, Nummer, Richtung und Haltestelle auswählen und man bekommt die Abfahrzeiten der nächsten zwei Busse angezeigt. Wer wissen will wie man vom aktuellen Ort mit Bus und Bahn zum gewünschten Ziellort kommt, kann diese Seite besuchen: http://gothere.sg/maps Einfach aktuellen Ort eingeben, Ziellort eingeben und man gekommt Schritt für Schritt gesagt mit welchem Bus oder MRT man wo hin muss. Taxis fahren immer. Es gibt 4 Taxiunternehmen in Singapore: SilverCab (silberne Hyundai Sonatas), SMRT (alte Toyotas), CityCab (gelbe und blaue Hyundai Sonatas) und LimoCab (Mercedes oder Chrysler). Taxis kann man per Telefon (6552 1111) oder SMS bestellen oder auf der Straße anhalten (einfach winken). Allerdings dürfen Taxis nicht überall halten. Im Vergleich zu deutschen Verhältnissen ist Taxifahren recht günstig, allerdings gibt es ab Mitternacht eine Night-Surcharge von 50% auf den Fahrpreis. Wann sollte man nicht versuchen mit dem Taxi zu fahren: Im Berufsverkehr (8-9 Uhr morgens und 17-18:30 Abends), wenn es regnet, da dann jeder mit dem Taxi fahren will! Überlastete Leitungen sind dann keine Seltenheit... Food In Singapore ißt man üblicherweise in sogenannten Food Courts (klimatisierte Räume in Shopping Malls) oder Hawker Centern (unklimatisierte Räume, aber überdacht im Freien), auch „Coffee Shops“ genannt. Hierbei handelt es sich um ein Cluster von Essständen mit gemeinsamer Sitzmöglichkeit. Oder eben in Restaurants. Restaurants sind die wesentlich teurere Variante gegenüber den Food Courts und Hawker Centern. Je nach Kategorie sollte man für ein Restaurantbesuch ca. 30 SGD (aufwärts) pro Person rechnen. Für Food Courts und Hawker Center reichen in der Regel 10 SGD (abwärts). Es ist nicht leicht Essen in Singapore zu empfehlen, denn es handelt sich praktisch um einen essentiellen Teil der Kultur in uns (deutschen und vllt. Europäern im Allgemeinen) unbekanntem Ausmaß. Essen kann man überall und es ist nahezu überall sehr gut. Im Folgenden eine Aufzählung verschiedener Nationlitäten und dem jeweils (meiner Meinung nach) besten Restaurant/Ort, an dem man das Jeweilige zu sich nehmen kann. Es handelt sich um das Mindeste, was man mal versucht haben sollte, um annähernd die Vielfalt, die Singapore bietet, zu entdecken. Im Folgenden meine persönliche must eat Liste: Mittag- und Abendessen Japanisch: Sushi, zu empfehlen bei Ishiban Boshi (MRT Station Novena im 1. OG), Restaurant. Einfach Sushi aus der Karte bestellen oder vom Band nehmen. Zu empfehlen: Soft Shell Crab Handroll. Thailändisch: Jeder in Singapore weiß, wo es das beste Thaiessen gibt: Golden Mile Complex auf der Beach Road. Im Golden Mile Complex gibt es thailändische Geschäfte, Märkte, Diskos und eben Restaurants. Betritt man das Gebäude von der Bushaltestelle, läuft man auf das Restaurant direkt zu. Zu empfehlen: Tom Yam Gong (scharf!), Fishcake, Phat Thai, Green/Red/Yellow Curry mit Chicken/Pork/Beef. Indisch: Am besten in Little India. Zwei Restaurants kann ich empfehlen, beide auf der Race Course Road (MRT Station Little India): Jaggie’s (Nord-Indisch) und das Banana Leave. Zu empfehlen: Prata, Cheese Naan, Tondoori Chicken, Murtabak Mutton, Curry Sauce. Taiwanesisch: Am besten im Din Tai Fung, Restaurant. Zwei sind mir bekannt, beide auf der Orchard Road: einmal im 313 (Somerset MRT) und einmal in der Wisma Atria (Orchard Road MRT). Zu empfehlen: Shrimp Dumplings, Pork noodle. Singapore: Natürlich gibt es auch typisches Singaporeessen. Hierzu zählt: Laksa, Fried Carrot Cake, Fried Kwey Teow und Hookien Prawn Noodle. Diese Gerichte sollte man in der Regel in jedem Food Court und Hawker Center bekommen. Sehr schön ist es auch sich Abends einmal zu Lau Pasat zu begeben (Nähe von Raffles Place MRT) und verschiedene Satay-Spieße unter freiem Himmel zu genießen (nur Abends!) Chinesisch: Am besten in China Town. Es gibt dort eine Straße, die Smith Street auch Food Street genannt, die Abends geschlossen wird und etliche Essstände aufmachen. Auch schönes Ambiente. Koreanisch: Am besten und günstigsten an einem der Stalls in den Food Courts. Typisch koreanisch ist Kimchi. Lecker schmeckt insbesondere das gebratene Hähnchen oder Rindfleisch. Tip: Philippinisch: Am Ende der Somerset Road Ecke Grange Road (schräg gegenüber Cineleisure Orchard) gibt es einen kleinen Hawker Center mit einem philippinischen Stand. Hier wird „BBQ Chicken“ und „BBQ Pork Belly“ servier, jeweils über offenen Feuer gegrillt und jeweils mit Reis und einer Soße. Der Weg lohnt sich, aber man sollte früh erscheinen ca. 18:30 Uhr. Deutsch: Wer asiatisches Essen nicht ausstehen kann bzw. nicht auf sein Schnitzel verzichten will, der geht zur „Brotzeit“ an der City Hall, gegenüber Chijmes oder zur „Brotzeit“ im Vivo City (MRT Harbour Front). Alternativ bucht man für Sonntags einen Tisch zum Brunchen im „Paulaner“ (Millenia Walk, http://www.paulaner-brauhaus.com/singapore) und genießt für 45 SGD (ohne free-flow Paulaner) bzw. 55 SGD (mit free-flow Paulaner) all you can eat deutsche Küche. Fisch: Wer gerne Shrimps, Garnelen und eine Krabbe essen möchte kann dies günstig und nicht so ganz gut in den Hawker Centern machen oder bucht einen Tisch bei „Jumbo Sea Food“. Entweder an Riverside oder im East Coast Park (http://www.jumboseafood.com.sg/). Zu empfehlen: Pepper oder Chilli Crab, Cereal Prawns (sic!) und salted fish fried rice. Meat Lovers: Wer all you can eat Rumpsteak, Sausage und der gleichen haben will geht am besten ins Canivore im Innenhof des Chijmes (MRT Station City Hall).

    ANNEX 1 KALLANG RIVERSIDE URA envisions Kallang Riverside to be a new lifestyle precinct by the edge of the city 1 As part of the Draft Master Plan 2008, the blueprint for Kallang Riverside was unveiled by the URA. The vision for Kallang Riverside is to transform it into a new lifestyle precinct by the edge of the city, offering distinctive waterfront homes with a mix of offices, hotels, and retail and entertainment facilities set against beautiful beachfronts with breathtaking views of the city skyline. 2 Kallang Riverside is one of the three commercial hubs outside the city centre that will be developed to provide alternatives for businesses and jobs closer to homes. The other two commercial hubs are Jurong Lake District and Paya Lebar Central. 3 Kallang Riverside refers to the areas on both sides of the Kallang River, bounded by Nicoll Highway, Kallang Road and Sims Way. It boasts a wide expanse of beaches and greenery, located at the end of the Greater Marina Bay. It is just 4km away from the city and is in close proximity to key attractions like the Sports Hub, Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay. Key proposals 4 Two complementary precincts will be developed, on the west and east sides of Kallang river; capitalising on the beautiful beaches and existing mature greenery. The west side of the river will offer distinctive waterfront homes with a beachfront setting while the east side of the river will have quality office space with a mix of hotel, entertainment and retail uses. 5 The key proposals for Kallang Riverside are: a) Develop a unique, distinctive residential enclave on the west of Kallang River set in a lush park setting with views of the waterfront; b) Create a whole new lifestyle hub in an intimate setting, with a variety of vibrant shops, restaurants, entertainment and lifestyle uses; and c) Provide easy accessibility from Lavender and Kallang MRT stations to attractions like the beachfront and the adjacent Sports Hub, with a network of second-storey and street-level walkways.

These views and perceptions impact our relationship with the natural world. Note Some people see nature as wild and chaotic while others view nature as orderly, acting according to natural “laws”. There are those who perceive nature as an economic resource to be exploited for profit or for human enjoyment, yet there are also many who strongly believe that nature should be left untouched to flourish in its natural state. This issue of BiblioAsia looks at how human activities over the past 200 years have affected and transformed our physical environment, and how we are still living with the consequences today. This special edition accompanies an exciting new exhibition launched by the National Library – “Human x Nature” – at the Gallery on Level 10 of the National Library Building on Victoria Street. Do visit the exhibition, which will run until September this year. Georgina Wong, one of the curators of the show, opens this issue by exploring the relationship between European naturalists and the local community as plants and animals new to the West were uncovered.
