Tommy Douglas has touched the life of every Canadian," says Michael Therriault. "He was a hero, a valiant fighter. But he was also tender and funny. It's a tremendous privilege to explore the public and private life of the architect of so many of the social programs which are critical to Canada. But, it's also a tremendous responsibility." Prairie Giant: The Tommy Douglas Story was Therriault’s feature length screen debut. "Film was a whole new world for me. Scenes shot out of chronological order, quick takes, short rehearsals, playing to the camera and not the back row - I had a lot to learn. I was lucky to be working with not only very talented but very patient people." The award-winning Therriault is one of the most respected young actors in the country. Recently, he played Leo Bloom in the Canadian production of Mel Brooks' The Producers. For that performance, he received the Dora Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Prior to that, he spent seven seasons at the Stratford Festival of Canada. Therriault’s Shakespearian classic roles include: Henry VI in both Henry VI: Revenge in France and Henry VI: Revolt in England; Silvius in As You Like It; Ariel in The Tempest; and Francis Flute in A Midsummer Night's Dream. He has also been seen at Stratford in the modern classics The Seagull, Oscar Remembered, Fiddler on the Roof; and Camelot. With the Stratford Company, he toured to New York in The Miser and Much Ado About Nothing. Therriault was a member of the inaugural season of The Stratford Festival's Conservatory for Classical Theatre Training. He has also appeared in Ken Finkleman's The Newsroom. As soon as he wrapped the role of Tommy Douglas, Therriault left Saskatchewan for New York and Broadway to play Motel in Fiddler on the Roof. In February 2006, the musical production of The Lord of the Rings opened in Toronto. Michael Therriault played Gollum opposite Brent Carver's Gandalf, a role for which he received his second Dora Award. Therriault is cast as Harry Vincent in The Englishman’s Boy opposite Nicholas Campbell. Minds Eye Entertainment 480 Henderson Drive, Regina Sk. For over 30 years, in documentaries, feature film and television, Smith has used his unique cinematic vision to tell seminal Canadian stories. Prairie Giant: The Tommy Douglas Story is a perfect fit in Smith's repertoire. "This is a story of a great, great man. He stood for genuine, decent ideals and he never wavered, he never sold out. He didn't just talk about how the world should be. He fought fear, vested interests and the power elite to make changes himself." And he made those changes in Saskatchewan. Smith speaks of filming in the province, "I wanted to shoot this story in Saskatchewan because this is where Tommy made history. I wanted to be surrounded by people who know what Saskatchewan is, who Tommy Douglas was and what he did for the province and then for the country. People here feel very strongly about Tommy Douglas and they have a depth of knowledge and sensitivity to this story. That's a great advantage for filmmakers." Smith may be best known for the touchstone miniseries The Boys of St. Vincent. Dealing with sexual abuse of boys by priests, the provocative miniseries won numerous international awards including a Peabody Award, seven Gemini Awards including Best Dramatic Miniseries and Best Director, two gold medals and two bronze medals at the New York Festival of Broadcasting as well as awards in Italy, France and Germany. His other television credits include the miniseries Dieppe (1995 Gemini, Best Dramatic Miniseries and 10 other nominations), Revenge of the Land and Random Passage (2002 winner of two Gemini Awards and four other nominations). His feature film credits include Geraldine's Fortune starring Jane Curtin and Mary Walsh, Dangerous Minds with Michelle Pfeiffer and A Cool, Dry Place starring Monica Potter and Vince Vaughn. Smith is currently directing the Minds Eye Entertainment mini-series The Englishman’s Boy. JOHN N. SMITH TO DIRECT GUY VANDERHAEGHE’S THE ENGLISHMAN’S BOY (June 27, 2006) Guy Vanderhaeghe is adapting his Governor General Award-winning novel, The Englishman’s Boy, as a two-part, four-hour mini-series to be directed by John N. Smith and produced by Kevin DeWalt of Minds Eye Entertainment for CBC Television. The Englishman’s Boy, which was shortlisted for the Giller Prize and the International IMPAC Dublin Award, weaves two parallel narratives into one spellbinding story. In 1920s Hollywood, the young Canadian writer Harry Vincent is engaged by a movie mogul to track down an elusive old-time Western actor. Vincent’s relationships with both the actor and the studio boss expose the dark side of myth-making. In counterpoint to the realm of Hollywood is the haunting story of a young drifter known simply as “the Englishman’s boy.” In 1873, the boy joins a group of wolf hunters on the trail of horse thieves. It is a journey that climaxes in a brutal encounter with the Assiniboine Indians in the Cypress Hills – an encounter which will change this country forever. “Guy is a writer of rare power,” comments director John N. Smith. “We have been collaborating on bringing this riveting story to the screen for a very long time. Canadian viewers are in for a great treat, I promise you.” “This is very much a cautionary tale,” explains Vanderhaeghe. “It is a western and an examination of the mythic political power of westerns. It is also a little-known tale of Canada. I can’t think of a more sensitive director than John to transform my words into images.” John N.

Ethan McSweeny /Selected Press – Classics 01.18 “Ethan McSweeny seems to have a Midas touch. It’s not that the plays he directs turn into gold but they do sail across the footlights with a vibrant, magnetic sheen… The wunderkind director who made his Broadway debut before some directors finish graduate school, is earning plaudits for a flurry of new productions…Throughout his career, McSweeny has moved from classics to contemporary dramas to premieres with ease…His scrupulous attention to the melding of design, pacing, and performance and facility with which he presents them, feels crisp, vibrant, and cinematic.” Jaime Kleiman, American Theatre “McSweeny is revealing himself to be the kind of directorial prodigy we read about in biographies of such auteurs as Robert Wilson and Peter Sellers. Except that he does not impose a vision or conceit on a play; he amplifies themes in the work.” Rohan Preston, Minneapolis Star Tribune “McSweeny is not only one of our most successful theatre directors, but equally one of our most important, and for a man who zoomed a few years ago past 40, he continues to sport the aura of a modern Boy Wonder — an Orson Welles with much more in his future than commercials for Paul Masson … It’s not just that he is — as Peter Marks characterized him in his Washington Post review of The Tempest — a “classical imagist,” although he does possess that rare mixture of deep affinity for text and a fanciful eye. He has proven to be fluid in his choices, negotiating between the classical and the edgy-new.

Abstract What makes a good ending? How do we know when something ends? In performance, it is difficult to characterize that nebulous and highly subjective — yet nonetheless theatrically powerful — “sense” of an ending. Previous scholarly work on Shakespearean endings, even when emphasizing performance, has largely focused on understanding endings from a narrative viewpoint, questioning how endings reach textual closure. These works examine the lingering questions or problems at the end of Shakespeare’s texts, and discuss how performance tackles these issues. This dissertation takes performance as its starting point.

George Ryga’s HUNGRY HILLS The award-winning novel HUNGRY HILLS by legendary Canadian author George Ryga has been adapted for the screen by Vancouver-based screenwriter Gary Fisher and began principal photography in and around Regina, Saskatchewan on April 27, 2009 under the helm of director Rob King. The rolling hills of Saskatchewan’s Qu’Appelle Valley provided the setting for Ryga’s story of a young man’s desperate attempts to overcome poverty and discrimination. Ryga’s timeless story of perseverance and redemption has been a sixteen-year journey for screenwriter Gary Fisher, a dream shared by award-winning director Rob King (Moccasin Flats: Redemption, Something More) who has championed the project alongside Fisher for the last decade. George Ryga’s HUNGRY HILLS stars Keir Gilchrist (United States of Tara), Alexander De Jordy (Sticks and Stones, True Heroes), John Pyper-Ferguson (Brothers & Sisters, Everest), Gabrielle Rose (Grace, Mothers & Daughters), Alexia Fast (Kaya, Left Coast) and Cavan Cunningham (Just Friends, Corner Gas). Rhonda Baker (Dolan’s Cadillac, Ticket Out, The Messengers), Avi Federgreen (One Week; Leslie, My Name is Evil), Rob King and Gary Fisher produced the feature-length film. Jennifer Jonas (Leslie, My Name Is Evil, All Hat) and Leonard Farlinger (Monkey Warfare, The Perfect Son) of New Real Films, and Gerard Demaer of Gerard Productions Inc. served as executive producers. SYNOPSIS In 1954 after two years in a home for boys, Snit Mandolin (Keir Gilchrist), 15, returns home to his seemingly unhinged and reclusive aunt Matilda (Gabrielle Rose). Defeated by a community that still shuns him, confronted by the impossibility of surviving on his aunt’s farm, Snit falls in with Johnny Swift (Alexander De Jordy), 16, another outcast.

Want to learn more about our Thank you so much for coming out tonight to support ESA – a fantas6c community of singers, dancers, filmmakers, actors, ar6sts and musicians who are supported by school staff, guest students? Visit… ar6sts, parents and community members. Tonight is the first of what we are hoping will be an annual event to celebrate our alumni and current students, while raising funds to enhance the physical space at ESA. When the idea to hold a gala was first floated, we had no idea what the response from our alumni would be. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our graduates to come back and join the show and we couldn’t be more grateful. Since launching the event, I have also heard from many other former students who would love to be a part of this produc6on in future years (watch out for next year’s line up!). Our Co-‐Hosts tonight (and parents of ESA grads), Robin Duke and Rosemary Dunsmore were also happy and quick to sign on and our collec6ve thanks to these fabulous ar6sts. Of course, you will also see many of our current student groups on stage tonight and we thank them and their teachers for coming out, performing and suppor6ng this event to improve their school! As audience members, we rightly focus on the stage and give great applause to the fantas6c ar6sts we see there, but I also want to thank and congratulate those who organized this evening’s show (and, in many cases, who are also working on the capital campaign to improve school facili6es).
