Organized by the Film School of Uruguay (ECU) and Cinemateca Uruguaya, the 16FIEC took place from 11 to 14 August in Sala Pocitos (Montevideo), with free access and entrance, congregating hundreds of students, film makers and general audience during four days of exhibitions and side events. This year the official selection included 59 short films from 42 film schools of 25 countries, establishing a real artistic and academic exchange between film schools all around the world, and a representative showcase of what the new generations of film makers are creating in fiction, documentary and animation. The winner was awarded with a Final Draft license, professional camera and equipment for two days of shooting by Musitelli Film & Digital, and mentoring in color correction from ColoUr. Side events Under the slogan “new dramatic arts” two academic side events took place during the Festival, open with free entrance to students from all academic institutions in the country and to the general public. Screenwriter Gibrán Portela (“La jaula de oro”, “Güeros”), one of the most claimed talents in the new Mexican film industry, dictated a Screenwriting Master Class on Thursday 11th. And Argentinian playwright, actor and director Lisandro Rodríguez offered an intensive Laboratory/Workshop on Dramatic Arts and Mise-en-scène under the title “Private/Public”; they were two days of hard work and removing ideas. During the Festival took place the graduation ceremony of ECU’s 2011 Generation, one of which graduation short films (“Cuento de medianoche”) was part of the official selection. As the Festival’s closing event, on Tuesday 16 of August at Sala Zitarrosa we screened the feature film “Güeros” (México, 2014), winner of multiple international awards - best first film in the Berlin Film Festival, Horizontes Latinos prize in San Sebastian and Coral Prize to the best film in La Habana, as well as a Best Director nomination (Alonso Ruizpalacios) in the 2016 Platino awards – with screenwriter Gibrán Portela answering questions from the audience at the end of the screening.
