Church History - Week 1 60 - 312 AD Hebrews 13:7 (NIV) - "Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith." 1. Church Structures a. Acts 2:42-47 and the whole of the New Testament describes early Church structure and practices. b. Homes and some larger rented buildings for meetings - Acts 12:12; Rom 16:5; 1 Cor 16:19; Col 4:15; Phm 1:2; Acts 2:46; Acts 19:9. Because Christianity was illegal, special Church buildings were not used in this time. c. There were local elders but all Christians were ministers - there was no “clergy and laity” distinction - all gifts were important. 2. Church Persecution was a part of life 3. Church Growth a. In his book, The Rise of Christianity, Rodney Stark (professor of Social Sciences at Baylor University) says that in the first three centuries of the Church, Christianity grew by 40% every decade. This means that they grew from a few thousand in 40 AD to 34 million in 350 AD. They grew from less than 1% of the total population to 56% of the empire in a few centuries. 4. Miracles a large part of life but may have been starting to wane. 5. Church beliefs a. Patrology’s message is to be sure of the authenticity of these acts scientifically, publishing them and translating them in modern languages. 3) More importantly is the discovery of the thoughts of the Fathers, their dogma, doctrines and concepts concerning God, man, church, salvation, worship, creation, the body, the heavenly life, etc. Patrology is the door through which we can enter into the church and attain her spirit, which affects our inner life, conduct and behavior. Through Patrology, the acts of the Fathers are transferred into living thoughts and concepts which are based on a sound foundation, without ignoring the world around us. -
The Eschatological Role of the Seventh Antediluvian Hero in 2 (Slavonic) Enoch

ORLOV THE PILLAR OF THE WORLD: THE ESCHATOLOGICAL ROLE OF THE SEVENTH ANTEDILUVIAN HERO IN 2 (SLAVONIC) ENOCH Introduction In chapter 25 of the 2 Enoch the Lord reveals to the translated antediluvian hero some unique details in the mysteries of creation found neither in earlier Enochic booklets nor in any other Second Temple Jewish materials. One of the important parts of this revelation deals with the order of events that preceded the visible creation. The Deity unveils to the seer that prior to visible creation he called out from nothing the luminous aeon Adoil ordering him to become the foundation of the upper things. The account describes the process of Adoil’s transmutation into the cornerstone of creation on which the Deity establishes his Throne. Several distinguished students of Jewish mystical traditions, including Gershom Scholem and Moshe Idel, noticed that this protological account in chapter 25 dealing with the establishment of the created order appears to parallel the order of eschatological events narrated in chapter 65 where during his short visit to earth Enoch conveys to his children the mystery of the last times. 1 According to Enoch’s instruction, after the final judgment time will collapse and all the righteous of the world will be incorporated into a single luminous aeon. The description of this final aeon appears to bear striking similarities with the primordial aeon Adoil portrayed in chapter 25 as the foundation of the created order. The text also seems to hint that the righteous Enoch, translated to heaven and transformed into a luminous celestial creature, is the first fruit of this eschatological aeon that will eventually gather all the righteous into a single entity. -

Session 5 – Jehovah's Witnesses David Platt April 20, 2018 Who are Jehovah's Witnesses? They identify themselves as followers of God who believe that “Jehovah” is God’s one true name, hence the name “Jehovah's Witnesses.” Jehovah's Witnesses began with Charles Taze Russell in 1872. Here is a little background on him. Russell grew up in the church but had great difficulty with the doctrines of the Trinity and hell. At age 18, he organized a Bible class in Pittsburgh during the Bible Student Movement of the 1870s and began teaching his view of those doctrines. In 1879, he began co-publishing his teachings in The Herald of the Morning magazine. In 1884, he controlled the publishing and renamed the magazine The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom and founded Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society—now known as the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society. Circulation of the first edition of the The Watchtower magazine was 6,000 copies per month. Today, the publishing complex in Brooklyn—their current headquarters—produces 100,000 books and 800,000 copies of its magazines per day—not year—per day. These magazines and books are everywhere. You may recognize them or not when you see them. They are in stores and storefronts. I was in the Department of Motor Vehicles the other day and there was this huge display with these books and magazines. People have so much time to read in this place. This is a horrible place for these to be. You look at them and see the titles, “Finding True Life”, “Is the Bible Relevant Today?”, “Can the Bible Help Me Have a Happy Family?”, “A Balanced View of Money” and on and on. -
