Session 5 – Jehovah's Witnesses David Platt April 20, 2018 Who are Jehovah's Witnesses? They identify themselves as followers of God who believe that “Jehovah” is God’s one true name, hence the name “Jehovah's Witnesses.” Jehovah's Witnesses began with Charles Taze Russell in 1872. Here is a little background on him. Russell grew up in the church but had great difficulty with the doctrines of the Trinity and hell. At age 18, he organized a Bible class in Pittsburgh during the Bible Student Movement of the 1870s and began teaching his view of those doctrines. In 1879, he began co-publishing his teachings in The Herald of the Morning magazine. In 1884, he controlled the publishing and renamed the magazine The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom and founded Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society—now known as the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society. Circulation of the first edition of the The Watchtower magazine was 6,000 copies per month. Today, the publishing complex in Brooklyn—their current headquarters—produces 100,000 books and 800,000 copies of its magazines per day—not year—per day. These magazines and books are everywhere. You may recognize them or not when you see them. They are in stores and storefronts. I was in the Department of Motor Vehicles the other day and there was this huge display with these books and magazines. People have so much time to read in this place. This is a horrible place for these to be. You look at them and see the titles, “Finding True Life”, “Is the Bible Relevant Today?”, “Can the Bible Help Me Have a Happy Family?”, “A Balanced View of Money” and on and on.

He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

  • Why the Jehovah's Witnesses Grow So Rapidly: a Theoretical Application
Journal of Contemporary Religion, Vol. 12, No. 2, 1997 133 Why the Jehovah’s Witnesses Grow so Rapidly: A Theoretical Application RODNEY STARK & LAURENCE R. IANNACCONE ABSTRACT This paper applies a general theory of why religious movements succeed or fail to explain why the Jehovah’s Witnesses are the most rapidly growing religious movement in the western world. In addition to qualitative assessments of Witness doctrines, organisational structures, internal networks, and socialisation, we utilise quantitative data from a variety of sources to assess such things as the impact offailed prophesies, how “strictness” eliminates free-riders and strengthens congregations, the demographic make-up of the Witness “labor force”, and the effects of continuity with local religious cultures on success. Introduction During the past 75 years the Jehovah’s Witnesses have sustained an extraordi- nary rate of growth—currently more than 5% per year—and have done so on a global scale. In 1995, there were at least a million very active Witnesses in the United States and about 4 million in the other 231 nations in which they conduct missions. Indicative of the immense effort involved in this achievement is the fact that almost every reader of this essay will have been visited by Jehovah’s Witnesses during the past several years. However, if the Witnesses frequently appear on our doorsteps, they are conspicuously absent from our journals. For example, during its 34-year history, the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion has published articles devoted to an amazing array of obscure religious movements, but none has been devoted to the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Charles Thornton and Fred Williams, Sr., for alerting us at an early date to developments in this area and motivating us to send out a clarion call to other interested brethren. To Bros. Ric Cunningham and Jerry Leslie for producing excellent treatises expounding the Bible Student position. These both provided the inspiration to pursue the Scriptural defense yet further and to follow through on lines of reasoning that were suggested. Bro. Leslie's scholarly Dating the Desolation also renewed our interest in the views of earlier advocates of a 70 year desolation period. In addition, our gratitude extends to Bros. Eugene Burns, Michael Koterba, Paul Mezera and Dick Salyards with whom correspondence and comm unication yielded fruitful results and further encouragement. As always, my dear wife Elaine deserves special appreciation for her cheerful labors in typing, proofreading and constructive suggestions for improving both content and grammatical form. Once again, Bro, Michael Nekora has given generously of his time and computer skills in converting the manuscript and charts into an inviting format and additionally offered valuable suggestions for strengthening the presentation. We are indebted to Bro. David Vickery for the dramatic cover design.

Go to any bookstore or library and look up "Jehovah's Witnesses" and you will find nine times out of ten the statement; "Jehovah's Witnesses, a sect founded by Charles Taze Russell". But nothing could be further from the truth. Indeed, the late Charles Taze Russell (1852-1916) was the founder and organizer of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society and served as the editor of Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence from its inception in July 1879.

He had the vision and foresight to see that moving picture spectaculars were coming in the foreseeable future. Immediately he saw its possibility as a method of expanding and promoting his millennial convictions. In the early days of experiment and production, Russell was in the midst of it. Using a combination of slides, film, and phonograph records, he produced the first of the visual aid techniques.”3 “It was the following year [1914] that he completed work on a long-term project –the first epic motion picture. It was called ‘The Photo-Drama of Creation,’ and although it appeared 15 years before other sound pictures were produced, it offered a combination of motion and still pictures synchronized with a recorded lecture.”4 “This production, undertaken when movies were still a novelty, was claimed to be the first attempt, at least by a religious society, to synchronize sound and pictures.”5 “Le millénium approchant, Russell se lança dans la production cinématographique en créant le photodrame de la création.

  • Lest We Forget
Page 1 of 16 LEST WE FORGET A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BIBLE STUDENT MOVEMENT AFTER PASTOR RUSSELL’S DEATH The following resulted from an inquiry by one newly interested in the Truth about the history of the Bible Students and the Truth movement. This brief review attempts to relate experiences of Bible Students after Pastor Russell’s death as factually as possible. It is purposely brief, but hopefully it includes historical events that help explain present conditions amongst Bible Students. Its viewpoint and comments reflect the writer’s own experiences, readings and accounts told to him by older Bible Students. The writer began his consecrated life in 1948 at the age of 17 meeting with a Dawn class in Seattle, Washington, and remained there for over twenty years until changing conditions caused a division. Understandably, some would rather forget painful past experiences, but, hopefully, reflecting upon the past and its lessons will help some avoid repeating them in the future. The death of Pastor Charles Taze Russell, October 31, 1916, marked a dramatic change in the course of the Bible Student movement. PASTOR RUSSELL’S MINISTRY During Pastor Russell’s lifetime, he founded the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society and other business entities to further the work of proclaiming “Present Truth” to the world, particularly, the Christian world. Under his leadership, the Truth message was available to all in the United States, Europe and many other countries. In his day, he was the most prominent Christian personage in the world. His sermons were carried weekly in 2,000 of our nation’s leading newspapers.
