Tour Report Namibia, Botswana & Zambia - Etosha to the Victoria Falls!

Day 1 Friday 22nd February

Our overnight flight to Johannesburg departed from Heathrow, arriving in plenty of time for our onward connection to Windhoek in Namibia.

Day 2 Saturday 23rd February

Flight BA6275 from Johannesburg lands at Hosea Kutako International Airport, and is on time at 14:20. We meet, use the facilities and clear up some issues with luggage that had been broken into on the flight from Johannesburg. We leave the airport at 15:30 and head towards Waterberg Plateau Park which is 310 kilometres away. We arrive at the park at 19:20, check into our rooms and go to dinner at 20:00.

We do not do a checklist this evening, but the following birds are worth mentioning: , Pale Chanting Goshawk, Steppe Buzzard, White-backed Vulture, Yellow-billed Kite, Purple Roller, Lilac-breasted Roller, European Bee-eater, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater. We also see various including Greater Kudu, Oryx, Springbok, Red Hartebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Steenbok, Chacma , Warthog and Burchell’s Zebra along the road to Waterberg.

Day 3 Sunday 24th February

We meet in the road in front of our bungalows at 06:00 and do a shortish walk to find some Namibian birds! Some of us hear Hartlaub’s Spurfowl calling pre-dawn before we start with our bird walk. We see a glimpse of a single Rockrunner, get a great view of a pair of Verraux’s Eagles and also find Purple Roller, Scarlet-chested Sunbird, White-bellied Sunbird, Marico Sunbird, Red-backed Shrike, Carp’s Tit, Violet Woodhoopoe, Pririt Batis and Grey-backed Cameroptera before we have breakfast.

We all walk back to our rooms and meet again at 09:00 to load the luggage and depart shortly afterwards. We visit the “ponds” at Otjiwarongo and see a lot of new birds before we continue to the town of Outjo for lunch and arrive at the Etosha gate at 15:30. We have a drive through the park and a visit to a couple of waterholes, arriving at Halali resort at 19:00 and checking into our rooms.

We meet again at 20:00 to have dinner and to do the checklist. Lots of new birds have been seen today including Blue Crane, Secretary Bird, Rufous-eared Warbler, Red-capped Lark, Spike-heeled Lark, Sabota Lark, Temminck’s Courser, Double-banded Courser, Red-crested Korhaan, Northern Black Korhaan. Mammals included Springbok, Black-faced Impala, Blue Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Burchell’s Zebra, Chacma Baboon, Warthog, Banded Mongoose, Scrub Hare and Ground Squirrel.

Day 4 Monday 25th February

Some of us meet at the restaurant for coffee/tea before we all depart on our morning game-drive at 06:40. We have a great morning and see Lion, three Black Rhinoceros, Springbok in their thousands, Blue Wildebeest,

African Elephant, Red Hartebeest, Kori Bustard, Northern Black Korhaan, Red-capped Lark and Greater Kestrel amongst many others

We return for breakfast shortly after 08:30 and meet again at the restaurant to do a short walk to the waterhole and spend time there until lunch, after which we have a short siesta before departing on our afternoon game drive at 15:30. We see Lion, Springbok, Southern Giraffe, Greater Kudu, Red Hartebeest, Black -faced Impala, Tawny Eagle, Bateleur, Steppe Buzzard, South African Shelduck, Red-billed Teal and Painted Snipe. We return to the camp at around 18:00 to have an early dinner and to do our checklist before we all go to the waterhole to do some night viewing. Several Rhinos keep us entertained as well as thousands of Double-banded Sandgrouse which come for a drink at dusk. We drive back to our rooms at 20:30.

Day 5 Tuesday 26th February

We pack, have breakfast and hit the road at around 08:00, heading east towards our next destination, Mokuti Etosha Lodge. Before we depart we see a Honey Badger, Violet Woodhoopoe, Barn Owl, Scops Owl, Black Cuckoo and Southern White-crowned Shrike.

En route we see a herd of 20 plus elephants, we spend quite some time watching and observing a White Rhinoceros and we see five Lionesses at a waterhole. At another waterhole we see more than 10 Giraffe. We arrive at our next destination in time for lunch and have a short siesta before we meet and depart for our afternoon drive into the park at 16:00. Our drive delivers Blue Cranes, Kori Bustard, Northern Black Korhaan, Greater Flamingo, Marsh Sandpiper, Three Banded Plover, Kittlitz’s Plover and African Cuckoo. We return to the lodge just before 19:00 and meet at 20:00 to do the checklist and for dinner.

Day 6 Wednesday 27th February

We have an early breakfast today at 05:30 and we depart the lodge at 07:00 to drive into Etosha National Park. We see Blue Cranes with a small chick, White-backed Vultures, Whiskered Tern, Long-tailed Paradise Wydah, Shaft-tailed Wydah, Violet-eared Waxbill and African Cuckoo. Mammals are well represented by Oryx, Burchell’s Zebra, Springbok, Blue Wildebeest, Southern Giraffe and Black-faced Impala, but the highlight is a group of more than 20 Elephants which come to a waterhole to drink and wallow in the water for more than half an hour. We also stop at Namutoni Resort for a coffee and we see Marico Sunbird, Icterine Warbler, African Golden Oriole and Grey-backed Cameroptera.

We return to the lodge at 12:00 for lunch and a siesta before we meet again at 16:00 for our afternoon game- drive which produces Grey-headed Gull, Woolly-necked Stork, Pied Avocet, Marabou Stork, Tawny Eagle, Burchell’s Sandgrouse and Double-banded Courser. We also see another small herd of Elephants come to a waterhole for a drink, Southern Giraffe, Greater Kudu, Wildebeest, Gemsbok, Black-faced Impala and Springbok.

Day 7 Thursday 28th February

We meet at 06:30 to do a short pre-breakfast bird walk on the property. We have good views of Red-billed Buffalo Weaver, Lesser Masked Weaver, African Paradise Flycatcher, Yellow-breasted Apalis, Black-faced

Babbler, Crested Francolin, Red-billed Spurfowl and Red-eyed Bulbul. We have breakfast and depart this stunning location at 09:00.

En route to our next destination we visit some ponds where see Painted Snipe, Glossy Ibis, Little and Cattle Egrets, Wood and Common Sandpipers, Ruff, African Jacana etc. We continue our drive and stop for a light lunch at a nice lodge and see Violet-eared Waxbill, Blue Waxbill, Yellow-breasted Apalis, White-bellied Sunbird and Black-faced Babblers. We finally arrive at our destination on the banks of the Okavango River at 17:00. We settle into our rooms and meet again at 18:00 to go for a wildlife drive which continues after dark. We have a wonderful time, seeing many birds to add to our growing list, including Black-crowned Night Heron, Rufous- bellied Heron, Long-toed Lapwing, Little Rush Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Lesser Moorhen, Coppery-tailed Coucal, Hottentot Teal, Red Bishop and Purple Swamphen. On our drive back we use our spot lights and manage to see Marsh Owl, and Square Tailed and Freckled Nightjar.

We return at 20:00, do the checklist and have dinner. We all retire to our rooms at 21:15 after a long day.

Day 8 Friday 1st March

We meet on the deck overlooking the river at 06:30 from where we do a short walk on the property and see Barn Owl, Open-billed Stork, Hartlaub’s Babbler, Arrow-marked Babbler, Kurrichane Thrush, Dark-capped Bulbul, Black-headed Oriole, White-browed Robin-chat, Red-eyed Dove, Mourning Dove and Bennett’s Woodpecker. We enjoy breakfast and leave the lodge just after 08:00.

We visit some ponds and see Painted Snipe, African Snipe, Red-billed Teal, Hottentot Teal, African Marsh Harrier, Three-banded Plover, Ruff, Wood Sandpiper, Marsh Sandpiper, White-faced Duck, Spur-winged Goose, Open-billed Stork, Intermediate and Great Egrets, Little Rush Warbler, Sedge Warbler and Fan-tailed Widowbird. We refuel in town and depart towards our next destination, Mahangu Safari Lodge. En route we see Dark Chanting Goshawk, Owambo Sparrowhawk and Brown Snake Eagles. We arrive for in time for lunch on the wooden deck and see Elephants, Sable Antelope, Impala, Warthog, Greater Kudu, Buffalo and Hippopotamus. We also see Yellow-billed Stork, Purple Heron, Blacksmith Lapwing and African Pied Wagtail.

After lunch we retire to our rooms and meet again for coffee/tea at 16:00, followed by an optional boat cruise at 17:00 during which we see Elephants, Bushbuck, Greater Kudu, Impala, Warthog, Vervet Monkey, Waterbuck and Buffalo. Many species of birds are seen including African Fish Eagle, Ayre’s Hawk Eagle, Little, Blue Cheeked, Carmine and White-fronted Bee Eaters, African Darter, Reed Cormorant, Pied, Woodland, Giant and Malachite Kingfishers, African Pied Wagtail, African Jacana and Wire-tailed Swallow amongst many others.

We return to the lodge at 19:00, do our checklist and have dinner.

Day 9 Saturday 2nd March

We meet on the wooden deck just before breakfast at 07:00. We depart the lodge at 08:00 and drive into Mahangu National Park where we see Buffalo, Red Lechwe, Common Reedbuck, Impala, Warthog, Greater Kudu, Roan Antelope and Blue Wildebeest. Numerous bird species are seen, including Pearl-spotted Owlet, Bateleur, African Fish Eagle, Wattled Crane, Great, Intermediate, Little, Cattle and Slaty Egrets, Wood

Sandpiper, Ruff, Open-billed Stork, Blacksmith and Long-toed Lapwing, Black-winged Stilt, Collared Pratincole, Jacobin Cuckoo, Grey-backed Cameroptera, Red-billed Woodhoopoe, Red-faced Mousebird, Green-capped Eremomela, Crimson-breasted Shrike, Grey-headed Kingfisher, Woodland Kingfisher, Blue-cheeked, Little, Carmine and Eurasian Bee Eaters.

We return to the lodge at 12:00, meet for lunch on the deck at 13:00 and have a short siesta before we leave on our afternoon drive at 16:00. It is very hot this afternoon - 35 degrees Celsius - but we see Buffalo, Common Reedbuck, Impala, Red Lechwe, Southern Giraffe, Tsessebe, Warthog, Chacma Baboon, Vervet Monkey, Roan Antelope and Burchell’s Zebra. Some of the birds seen include Wattled Crane, Black Crake, Ashy Flycatcher, Pale Flycatcher, African Paradise Flycatcher, Greater Blue-eared Glossy Starling, Burchell’s Starling, Meve’s Long-tailed Starling, Golden Weaver, Grey-headed Kingfisher, Woodland Kingfisher and Brown Firefinch to name but a few.

Day 10 Sunday 3rd March

Breakfast is at 07:00 and we depart the lodge and head towards Botswana for our half day excursion at 08:00. At the border post we see Pearl-spotted Owlet, Coppery, White-bellied, Scarlet-chested, Purple Banded and Collared Sunbirds, Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird, Blue Waxbill and Black-collared Barbet. We arrive at the lodge and leave our vehicles to board two small motor boats. We steer upstream and have great views of Pel’s Fishing Owl, African Darter, Saddle-billed and Open-billed Stork, Glossy and Hadeda Ibis, Brown-throated Martin, Little, Carmine, White-fronted and Blue-cheeked Bee Eaters, African Fish Eagle, Osprey, Narina Trogon, Golden Weaver, Brown-throated Weaver, Red Bishop and Fan-tailed Widowbird.

We return to our lodge where we have lunch after which there is time to relax before we set off at 14:30 to re- cross the border to our lodge in Namibia. We arrive just before 16:00 and meet again at 18:00 to do our checklist after which we doan early evening drive to look for some nocturnal stuff. As we leave the lodge we see an African Pygmy Kingfisher, Red-billed Woodhoopoe and Double-banded Sandgrouse. We see some nightjars, but they are very distant and remain silent, so we are unable to identify them. We return to the lodge at 19:30 for dinner.

Day 11 Monday 4th March

We begin the day with a short walk around the property starting on the deck and see African Green Pigeon, Lesser Honeyguide, Bradfield’s Hornbill, Black -collared Barbet, Woodland Kingfisher, Willow Warbler, Purple- banded Sunbird, Yellow-bellied Greenbul, White-browed Robin-chat, Dark-capped Bulbul, Swamp Boubou, Pygmy Goose and Pied Kingfisher.

We do a breakfast cruise on the river from 08:00 and have great views of Buffalo, Bushbuck, Impala, Warthog and Vervet Monkeys. Birds seen include African Harrier Hawk, African Crake, Black Crake, African Stonechat and Pied and Giant Kingfishers. We return to the lodge, pay our bar bills and depart at 10:15. En route to our lunch stop we see African Cuckoo, several Brown Snake Eagles, Blue Waxbill, Burchell’s Starling and Meve’s Long-tailed Starling. We arrive for lunch overlooking the Kwando River.

After lunch we proceed to drive to our next destination, Katima Mullilo, where our hotel is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River. We arrive just after 17:00 and meet to do the checklist at 19:00. En route we saw Burchell’s Zebra, Chacma , Vervet Monkeys and Impala.

Day 12 Tuesday 5th March

We meet for a quick cup of coffee/tea and do a short stroll on the property, but it is very quiet this morning. However, we manage to see Brown-hooded Kingfisher, African Golden Oriole, Dark-capped Bulbul, Collared Sunbird, Common Sandpiper, Blue Waxbill and Willow Warbler. Some people in the group manage to see four Schallow’s Turacos as well as Crested Barbet. We pack our bags and leave the hotel before 09:00.

En route we stop for a cup of coffee and search for the elusive Schallow’s Turaco. We depart at 10:00 with the entire group having seen this bird! We continue our journey and cross into Botswana, arriving at our next lodge, Chobe Safari Lodge, for lunch.

After lunch we settle into our rooms and meet again at 16:30 for our afternoon drive that takes us to the “ponds” and some locally known hotspots. We see Buffalo, Chacma Baboon, Vervet Monkey, Impala, Waterbuck, Warthog, African Fish Eagle, Village Indigobird, Village Weaver, Golden Weaver, Crested Barbet, Common Sandpiper, Whiskered Tern, Black-winged Stilt and Woodland, Brown-hooded, Pied, and Grey-headed Kingfisher. We return to our lodge at 18:30 and meet to do the checklist, followed by dinner at 19:30.

Day 13 Wednesday 6th March

We meet at 06:30 for a short pre-breakfast walk round the lodge grounds, followed by breakfast, then our morning boat trip at 08:00. Our morning walk produced Black-crowned Night Heron, Half-collared Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, White-browed Robin-chat and Collared Palm-thrush. Our boat trip produces great views of many Elephants crossing the river and some just swimming and drinking. We also see Buffalo, Red Lechwe, Greater Kudu, Warthog, Impala and Crocodiles. Bird sightings include Red Bishop, Little, Carmine, Blue- cheeked and White-fronted Bee-eaters, Lesser Gallinule, African Jacana, Open-billed Stork, Black Heron, Squacco Heron and Pied, Cape and Yellow Wagtails.

We return to the lodge and meet on the deck for lunch at 12:00. After lunch we have a short siesta and depart on our afternoon activity at 15:30. We have an absolutely splendid afternoon with lots and lots of Elephants plus Buffalo, Puku, Impala, Warthog, Southern Giraffe, Waterbuck and Leopard! We also see a lot of birds and manage to add White-fronted Plover to our list. We return to the lodge at 19:00, meet to do the checklist and have dinner at 20:00.

Day 14 Thursday 7th March

Some people opt to do the extra optional game-drive with the lodge guides and their morning starts at 06:00. The remaining four as well as the two leaders meet at 07:00 and do a walk through the property. This morning proves to be very productive and we see Bushbuck, Warthog, Chacma Baboon, Leopard, Burchell’s Zebra, Hippopotamus, Black-backed Jackal, Impala, Buffalo, Trumpeter Hornbill, Grey-headed Bush Shrike, Red- throated Twinspot, Yellow-breasted Apalis, Southern Grey-headed Sparrow, Ashy Flycatcher, Black-backed

Puffback, Blue Waxbill, Yellow-bellied Greenbul and Terrestrial Brownbul. We have a leisurely breakfast at 08:00 but the rest of the group arrive rather late from the optional drive – at 09:35! - but have a quick breakfast before we depart the lodge just after 10:00.

The border crossings take us just over two hours and we arrive in Livingstone after 13:30. We have lunch at a lovely location overlooking the Zambezi River and see Trumpeter Hornbill. After lunch we visit the Victoria Falls and take the 35 minute drive to our lodge which is upstream from the falls. We arrive just before 18:00 and meet on the deck overlooking the Zambezi River at 19:00 Where we do our checklist, seeing and hearing a Barn Owl during this time. Mammals seen include Bushbuck, Warthog and Chacma Baboon. Some of the new birds added to our list include Trumpeter Hornbill, Red-throated Twinspot, Red-winged Starling and Northern Grey- headed Sparrow.

After a succession of early mornings and all the excitement we have dinner and most of us opt for an early night.

Day 15 Friday 8th March

This morning breakfast is available from 07:00 but goes through to 09:00, so is a very leisurely affair. We decided to have a relaxed morning and we leave the lodge at 09:00 and drive to the local ponds followed by a stunning location that is situated on the edge of the gorge where we have lunch. We see Lizard Buzzard, Northern Grey- headed Sparrow, Red-headed Weaver, Black Swift, Rock Martin, Hooded Vulture, White-headed Vulture, Brown Snake Eagle, Bateleur, White-crested Helmet-shrike, Dideric Cuckoo, Scarlet-chested Sunbird, African Marsh Harrier, African Harrier Hawk and Osprey.

We return to our lodge at 14:20 in time to depart on our afternoon boat trip. We see Bushbuck, Elephant, Chacma Baboon, Vervet Monkey, Osprey, African Finfoot, Wattled Lapwing, White-crowned Lapwing, Hooded Vulture, White-browed Coucal, Pied Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, Black-crowned Night Heron, Glossy, Hadeda and Sacred Ibis and Open-billed Stork.

We return to the lodge at 19:00 and meet for the checklist and dinner at 20:00.

Day 16 Saturday 9th March

Some people are on the deck at 06:00 but have no luck seeing African Finfoot. We have a cup of coffee/tea and do a short walk in the grounds seeing Open-billed Stork, Little Sparrowhawk, Thick-billed Weaver, Golden Weaver, Village Weaver, African Pied Wagtail, Bearded Scrub Robin, Blue Waxbill, Green-winged Pytilia and Southern Grey-headed Sparrow. We return for breakfast and lounge around on the wooden deck before our departure at 10:00. We manage to add Broad-tailed Paradise Wydah to our list on the way to the airport. We arrive at Livingstone Airport at 11:00 in plenty of time to check in for our flight to Heathrow, via Johannesburg.

Day 17 Sunday 10th March

We arrive back at Heathrow this morning and after collecting our luggage we say our goodbyes after a memorable holiday taking in the wildlife and scenery of three southern African countries.
