For godt design lever videre hos nye generationer. 8 Mogens Lassen (1901-1987) Architect Mogens Lassen (1901-1987) is among the greatest and most influential of Danish architects, a pioneer of Danish Functionalism, and is internationally renowned for his characteristic architecture. Mogens Lassen was inspired by the German design school Bauhaus, and its geometric shapes recur often in his iconic designs. 9 10 11 Flemming Lassen (1902-1984) Architect Flemming Lassen (1902-1984) was a Modernist and part of the movement that brought Functionalism to Denmark. Flemming Lassen is particularly well known for his work with Arne Jacobsen on the award-winning House of the Future and Søllerød Town Hall, and his furniture has also achieved international recognition. 12 13 14 Frame • Design: Mogens Lassen 1943 / by Lassen 2013 15 16 17 About Frame A Mogens Lassen sketch from 1943 forms the starting point for Frame, a flexible storage solution comprised of square boxes in cubic frames. Frame modules can be hung directly on the wall, connected together, stacked, or stand on their own on the floor. Combine Frame modules into a classic shelf, a unique sculpture or something entirely new. The individual combination options are endless. Frame is manufactured in Denmark and created with attention to detail. Frame unites functionality, quality and aesthetics. You decide the ultimate look. 18 ’Space should be just as changeable as the landscape.’ Mogens Lassen 19 20 21 About Frame Stacked like small boxes atop one another or as simple, beautiful objects, Frame serves both a decorative and a practical purpose. Combine the wooden boxes with the colored boxes, or aim for the pure and simple look. The small Frame boxes can also be connected to the large Frame modules and used as a small display for your favorite objects. 22 23 24 Product: Frame Design: Mogens Lassen 1943 / by Lassen 2013 Color: Material: Light or dark grey melamine, black stained ash, oak veneer / MDF 25 Measurements: 10 cm 7 cm 10 cm 10 cm 14 cm 20 cm 10 cm 14 cm 20 cm 42 cm Product: Frame 35 cm 28 cm Design: Mogens Lassen 1943 / by Lassen 2013 28 cm 35 cm 42 cm 28 cm 35 cm 21 cm Color: Material: Light or dark grey melamine, black stained ash, oak veneer / MDF 26 27 28 Kubus • Design: Mogens Lassen 1962 29 30 31 About Kubus 4 With a sharp sense of contemporary Functionalist style, Mogens Lassen designed the iconic Kubus candleholder in 1962, a piece once reserved solely for family and close architect colleagues. The Kubus is still crafted in Denmark, and among architects and design connoisseurs it has acheived the status of a modern international design icon. 32 About Kubus 8 In 1962 the first Kubus 8 candleholders were completed. A well-known furrier family purchased one of them, and they were so pleased with the Kubus 8 that they invited friends over for dinner to showcase the piece. Architect and designer Finn Juhl was present that evening. The Kubus 8 was a highly anticipated work of art, and such was the case with Mogens Lassen’s designs. They were admired as true works of art. 33 34 35 About Kubus 1 Architect Mogens Lassen was commissioned to design the interior for a restaurant in North Zealand, and it was within the context of this assignment that the Kubus 1 was born. The square-shaped Kubus 1 gathered people around the table just as Mogens intended, and its characteristic shape and simple light created an atmosphere of coziness throughout the entire restaurant. The Kubus 1 still decorates tables in the very same restaurant, because good design lives on for generations. 36 Kubus • • • Made in Denmark 37 38 Product: Kubus Design: Mogens Lassen 1962 Color: Material: Lacquered steel, nickel-plated steel, copper-plated steel 39 Measurements: 6 cm 6 cm 23 cm 14 cm 7 cm 14 cm 7 cm 23 cm 7 cm 14 cm 23 cm Product: Kubus Design: Mogens Lassen 1962 Color: Material: Lacquered steel, nickel-plated steel, copper-plated steel 40 41 42 Line • Design: Mogens Lassen 1983 43 44 45 About Line Mogens Lassen designed throughout his entire life, and he could never stop working on pieces he had already completed. In 1983 he reapproached his own geometric candleholders, and the result was Line, whose shape was conceived through a mathematical formula. The two candleholders form a single line, and the architectural look fits perfectly with contemporary minimalism. 46 47 48 Product: Line Design: Mogens Lassen 1983 Color: Material: Lacquered steel 49 Measurements: 6 cm 10 cm 10 cm Product: Line Design: Mogens Lassen 1983 Color: Material: Lacquered steel 50 51 52 Base • Design: Jacob Manz 2009 53 54 55 About Base Base was designed in 2009 as an accessory for Kubus and Line to protect surfaces from dripping candle wax. Base beautifully frames the candleholders and emphasizes the simple design of both Kubus and Line. Base has been designed with the greatest respect for the architect Mogens Lassen – both as a person and as a designer. ARNEARNE JJAACOBSENCOBSEN THETHE TTONGUEONGUE THE TONGUE We fell truly, madly, deeply in love with this chair We admit it. We just fell in love. When the opportunity arose to take Arne Jacobsen’s Tongue chair under our wing at HOWE, we couldn’t resist. Does it sound crazy? That’s fine. We’re happy to say that we’re more than a little mad about this delightful chair. 4 5 A lost classic returns You see, the cutely named Tongue is a Danish design classic that went missing. Designed right after the Ant chair in 1955, the Tongue was always one of Arne Jacobsen’s favourites but never really found a home. Now the Tongue is back. 6 7 A visionary designer Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) is one of the best known designers of the 20th century. An extraordinary man of immense vision, Arne Jacobsen occupies the pinnacle of modern Danish design. His work epitomises Danish modernism and is held permanently by museums, prized by collectors, and employed throughout the world in home, work and educational environments. 8 9 Arne Jacobsen’s childhood Arne Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen in 1902. He was an only child in a family where the father was a wholesaler and the mother was one of the first women in Denmark to be trained in banking. The family home was a true Victorian styled home which probably led a young Arne Jacobsen to paint the walls in his room white as a contrast to the lavishly decorated interior. 10 11 12 13 A natural talent for painting At the age of 11 Arne Jacobsen was sent away to a boarding school.

  • Scandi Navian Design Catalog
SCANDI NAVIAN DESIGN CATALOG modernism101 rare design books Years ago—back when I was graphic designing—I did some print advertising work for my friend Daniel Kagay and his business White Wind Woodworking. During our collaboration I was struck by Kagay’s insistent referral to himself as a Cabinet Maker. Hunched over my light table reviewing 35mm slides of his wonderful furniture designs I thought Cabinet Maker the height of quaint modesty and humility. But like I said, that was a long time ago. Looking over the material gathered under the Scandinavian Design um- brella for this catalog I now understand the error of my youthful judgment. The annual exhibitions by The Cabinet-Makers Guild Copenhagen— featured prominently in early issues of Mobilia—helped me understand that Cabinet-Makers don’t necessarily exclude themselves from the high- est echelons of Furniture Design. In fact their fealty to craftsmanship and self-promotion are constants in the history of Scandinavian Design. The four Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland all share an attitude towards their Design cultures that are rightly viewed as the absolute apex of crafted excellence and institutional advocacy. From the first issue of Nyt Tidsskrift for Kunstindustri published by The Danish Society of Arts and Crafts in 1928 to MESTERVÆRKER: 100 ÅRS DANSK MØBELSNEDKERI [Danish Art Of Cabinetmaking] from the Danske Kunstindustrimuseum in 2000, Danish Designers and Craftsmen have benefited from an extraordinary collaboration between individuals, manufacturers, institutions, and governments. The countries that host organizations such as The Association of Danish Furniture Manufacturers, The Association of Furniture Dealers in Denmark, The Association of Interior Architects, The Association of Swedish Furni- ture Manufacturers, The Federation of Danish Textile Industries, Svenska Slojdforeningen, The Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo put the rest of the globe on notice that Design is an important cultural force deserv- ing the height of respect.

Mingle Design: Flemming Lassen 1935 Mingle is priced from: EUR 2.449. Mingle The Mingle sofa was designed in 1935 by architect Flemming Lassen (1902-1984) and was presented at the Cabinet Maker’s Autumn Exhibition in the same year. It was subsequently praised for its qualities as a small but elegant sofa in the professional journal “The Architect”. Flemming Lassen loved to travel, and he was often inspired by his journeys throughout Europe. He was very taken with both Italy and France, and had a burning desire to tour those countries on his motorcycle. Flemming Lassen wanted to create a sofa made for conversation with a comfort that invited people to stay seated and talk together for long periods of time. The armrests were designed to encircle the sitters, generating intimacy and transforming the sofa into a cosy place to relax. Flemming Lassen took inspiration from both French elegance and modern Italian style, and transferred the trends and his own ideas to a small, upholstered sofa called Mingle. The Mingle sofa is now being reintroduced by by Lassen, which owns the rights to the iconic designs of architect brothers Mogens Lassen (1901- 1987) and Flemming Lassen (1902-1984).

The Designers Company group intends to continue this success in several markets, including not least North America. More than 60% of the by Lassen products are manufactured in Holstebro, which further supports the group’s ambitions in sustainability and manufacturing. “It has been important for us to secure local production in Holstebro, and we are pleased that we are able to maintain these jobs,” says CEO Henrik Nielsen, by Lassen. “As the heritage, the history, the products and the organisation address the same traditions and ambitions as ours, it was not difficult to find each other,” says Group CEO Danny Feltmann, Designers Company.
