Le Danemark a toujours su tirer parti de ses avantages : malgré sa superficie réduite, sa grande force a toujours été le commerce et la navigation, lui permettant d’absorber facilement toutes les influences étrangères, les condenser puis les assimiler, sans perdre de vue leur ancrage national. L’industrialisation tardive a pu desservir le pays dans certains domaines mais il en est un que cet apparent retard a favorisé : le Design. En effet, l’artisanat a connu une vivacité sans égale, faisant du design danois l’un des plus beaux, qualitatifs et soigneux. À l’image des guildes françaises, puissantes associations regroupées par corps de métiers, créées au Moyen-Age et ayant une grande influence tout au long des siècles, la Guilde des ébénistes au Danemark était sans doute la plus importante et influente : la « Københavns Snedkerlaug » fut fondée en 1554, prenant une ampleur significative au fil des siècles. Plus que de simples ébénistes, ces « Cabinetmakers », selon le terme danois, mirent en place une exposition annuelle « The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition » pour promouvoir et récompenser les collaborations entre Designers et Cabinetmakers : encourager la création et susciter l’intérêt du public ont permis d’engendrer une véritable émulation amenant à la réalisation de véritables chefs d’œuvres tout au long de la manifestation, de 1927 à 1967. Cette tradition danoise, de l’artisanat et du savoir-faire, est une véritable prouesse technique dans laquelle chaque matériau est sublimé et traité avec la plus grande attention. Le design danois est aussi pluriel que le nombre de ses créateurs, malgré une identité forte, reconnaissable par ses lignes, sa pureté et sa qualité. Deux grands courants peuvent néanmoins être considérés comme les deux entités constitutives de la création danoise. Professeur à la « Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts », Kaare Klint (1888-1954) est connu comme le Père de la Modernité au Danemark : en effet, grâce à ses enseignements, toute une génération de designers eut de solides bases d’histoire du mobilier et s’attacha, en se basant sur les formes traditionnelles, à rendre le mobilier moderne en l’épurant, dans un un souci de fonctionnalisme et d’ergonomie. De Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) à Børge Mogensen (1914-1972) en passant par Poul Kjærholm (1929-1980) - malgré une esthétique radicalement opposée -, chacun a su donner sa propre vision du Design, sur des bases pourtant communes. D’autre part, Finn Juhl (1912-1989) est le fier représentant d’un second mouvement, celui d’un Design plus libéré et plus sensuel, dans lequel les formes de la nature joue un rôle prépondérant. Ces deux visions, non diamétralement opposées, mais dont les frontières sont poreuses, ont en commun la tradition des Arts and Craft, une grande sensibilité aux matériaux, notamment le bois, et une recherche perpétuelle de bien-être et de confort. Les cercles de légitimation du pays, à commencer par les expositions annuelles où jurys, critiques et journalistes se pressaient, permirent de mettre sur le devant de la scène les designers danois. De nombreuses expositions, à travers le monde entier, conduites par les créateurs eux-mêmes et soutenues par le gouvernement, assirent le prestige des créations danoises à l’internationale et le firent rayonner. 8 9 Enseignant à la « Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts » de Copenhague, Kaare Klint est connu comme le « Père de la Modernité » au Danemark, l’un des plus grands designers de sa génération, ayant reçu de nombreuses commandes prestigieuses à l’instar du mobilier qu’il a réalisé pour le nouveau bureau du Premier Ministre Thorvald Stauning. Il était de coutume ministérielle de commander à un créateur reconnu de nouveaux meubles à sa prise de fonction. Ainsi, Thorvald Stauning, pour son deuxième mandat, fit appel à Kaare Klint pour aménager son nouvel espace de travail. La pièce maîtresse de cette pièce était son grand bureau, réinterprétation moderne des bureaux anglais, auquel Kaare Klint accola une table de conférence.

    SCANDI NAVIAN DESIGN CATALOG modernism101 rare design books Years ago—back when I was graphic designing—I did some print advertising work for my friend Daniel Kagay and his business White Wind Woodworking. During our collaboration I was struck by Kagay’s insistent referral to himself as a Cabinet Maker. Hunched over my light table reviewing 35mm slides of his wonderful furniture designs I thought Cabinet Maker the height of quaint modesty and humility. But like I said, that was a long time ago. Looking over the material gathered under the Scandinavian Design um- brella for this catalog I now understand the error of my youthful judgment. The annual exhibitions by The Cabinet-Makers Guild Copenhagen— featured prominently in early issues of Mobilia—helped me understand that Cabinet-Makers don’t necessarily exclude themselves from the high- est echelons of Furniture Design. In fact their fealty to craftsmanship and self-promotion are constants in the history of Scandinavian Design. The four Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland all share an attitude towards their Design cultures that are rightly viewed as the absolute apex of crafted excellence and institutional advocacy. From the first issue of Nyt Tidsskrift for Kunstindustri published by The Danish Society of Arts and Crafts in 1928 to MESTERVÆRKER: 100 ÅRS DANSK MØBELSNEDKERI [Danish Art Of Cabinetmaking] from the Danske Kunstindustrimuseum in 2000, Danish Designers and Craftsmen have benefited from an extraordinary collaboration between individuals, manufacturers, institutions, and governments. Mingle The Mingle sofa was designed in 1935 by architect Flemming Lassen (1902-1984) and was presented at the Cabinet Maker’s Autumn Exhibition in the same year. It was subsequently praised for its qualities as a small but elegant sofa in the professional journal “The Architect”. Flemming Lassen loved to travel, and he was often inspired by his journeys throughout Europe. He was very taken with both Italy and France, and had a burning desire to tour those countries on his motorcycle. Flemming Lassen wanted to create a sofa made for conversation with a comfort that invited people to stay seated and talk together for long periods of time. The armrests were designed to encircle the sitters, generating intimacy and transforming the sofa into a cosy place to relax. Flemming Lassen took inspiration from both French elegance and modern Italian style, and transferred the trends and his own ideas to a small, upholstered sofa called Mingle. The Mingle sofa is now being reintroduced by by Lassen, which owns the rights to the iconic designs of architect brothers Mogens Lassen (1901- 1987) and Flemming Lassen (1902-1984).

    Press release Copenhagen, 18 June 2021 The company behind MENU – Designers Company – acquires design company by Lassen Designers Company, the entity behind design company MENU and hybrid design space The Audo, Copenhagen, acquires Holstebro-based design company by Lassen effective immediately. The acquisition is completed in line with Designers Company’s future strategy, which aims to create a House of Brands. As part of the group’s ambitions of strengthening and expanding the current business with additional Danish furniture icons, the heritage from Flemming, Mogens and Søren Lassen is a perfect match. With, among others, the classic chairs The Tired Man, Ingeborg and the bar stool ML42, the Designers Company group will take Danish furniture design to distant markets where the group is already well-positioned. By Lassen, which will continue as an independent brand, currently produces and sells a range of interior and furniture design products, which have been very successful in the Nordics. Products such as the Kubus range and The Tired Man chair have seen great progress in recent years. The Designers Company group intends to continue this success in several markets, including not least North America.
