Turn left and walk down Green Lane. Look at Cornish Street on left and the Cornish Works (former factory making files and knives). Keep going down Green Lane. Note the Milestone – smart restaurant and the likely clientel. Alfred Beckett and Sons (made steel, saws and files) is now Ink and Water webdesign. Worth pointing out this area was badly damaged in the 1864 flood caused by a dam burst. ‘No more poshies’ graffiti on wall of parking garage. Cactus estate agents – look at types of property for sale and prices. Who does the area cater for? Green Lane Works (made ornamental stove grates and fenders) currently being redeveloped into a total of 107 new houses of between one and four bedrooms in a £26million scheme. To the left of the gates is being developed into the Stew and Oyster smart pub.

With the role as a market town at this time, Sheffield have continued to be shaped by waterways to the present day. • Since the middle ages, Sheffield’s access to abundant natural resources has made it an ideal centre for a thriving iron and steel industry. • By the late 14th century Sheffield was famous for its metal knives and its role in this industry. • By the late 18th century all available sites on the rivers were developed. • In the 19th century, Sheffield became the principal location in Britain for large steel works.
