Y13 Sheffield Fieldwork Notes Take Supertram to Shalesmoor. On journey point out various places as pass – Manor, Hyde Park, through the city centre. Shalesmoor Point out the restaurant in the shipping container seen across the intersection. From tram stop turn right past the Wellington pub. Cross road and go down the slope to The Globe Works building. The building was a former cutlery factory and as it is listed it has been protected against being knocked down when the road was widened. Look at the gate posts – peep through windows to see evidence of the type of business (and type of person) – notice what kind of cars are in the car park. Fill in first set of data in booklet. Turn left and walk down Green Lane. Look at Cornish Street on left and the Cornish Works (former factory making files and knives). Keep going down Green Lane. Note the Milestone – smart restaurant and the likely clientel. Alfred Beckett and Sons (made steel, saws and files) is now Ink and Water webdesign. Worth pointing out this area was badly damaged in the 1864 flood caused by a dam burst. ‘No more poshies’ graffiti on wall of parking garage. Cactus estate agents – look at types of property for sale and prices. Who does the area cater for? Green Lane Works (made ornamental stove grates and fenders) currently being redeveloped into a total of 107 new houses of between one and four bedrooms in a £26million scheme. To the left of the gates is being developed into the Stew and Oyster smart pub. Grind Café – look at menu and prices and customers. Look at view of CBD – do you feel cut off from the CBD – how well is it linked. Little Kelham development – have a look at the houses and the adverts with sustainability claims. Fat Cat – look for flood levels marker. Kelham Island Museum and flats – what businesses are here? Publishers, student estate agents, Urban (bar with signs advertising cocktails, gin and doughnuts), Craft and Dough pizza restaurant. Collect data at this point and complete annotations on the sketch. 1 © Geographical Association 2018 Go past the Rialto block and through to the river path. Turn right and walk along by the river. Garages under flats – flood risk management. See street art by Phlegm “Harnessing of the Giant Squid” on pub across river. Cross road and continue along river path towards CBD. How easy is it to get to CBD? At night? Flood defences work ongoing. Walk past Home Office. Cross footbridge and point out flood gate and in the pocket park a memorial to the floods. Lady Bridge At Lady Bridge See the plaque marking the reopening after the 2007 flood – Richard Hawley and quote from his Lady Bridge song. Point out this was the start of the city – consider the endogenous features that meant this was an attractive place to build a settlement. Cross road to noticeboard on Castlegate and point out the Exchange Brewery and the Flemish style building over the river which amongst other things was Bachelor’s first caning factory and the birthplace of mushy peas! Turn up and past the Old Castle Market – discuss zone of discard. What effect has the removal of the market had? Discuss possible future plans for the area and whether this is still part of the CBD. Walk up past the old Primark building and collect data in an appropriate place. As walking up try and judge at what point it feels like the CBD has begun. Just before Paperchase turn left and walk down Bird Cage Walk to see more independent businesses and City of Sanctuary office. Walk round to Crucible/ Lyceum and Tudor Square. What evidence is there of the steel city branding? – name of Crucible, Head of Steam pub, metal seats. Discuss how events are held in the square and how the area has been made safe. Evidence of a 24 hour city? Point out the Central Library and discuss plans to turn it into a hotel using Chinese money – and the controversy. Walk through Winter Gardens (Roger McGough poem on right) into St Paul’s Square/Peace Gardens. The Moor – take them to top and arrange a time to meet. They complete data collection in small groups visiting the Moor and other areas depending on time. After lunch From Peace Gardens – walk down between Café Nero and Café Rouge. Turn left onto Charles Street. Cross main road. Before the café with orange front turn right onto Arundel Street. 2 © Geographical Association 2018 Cultural Industries Quarter Butcher Works (former tool, blade and cutlery factory) – now flats, café and Academy of Makers Gallery. Turn left onto Furnival Street – past Escape Rooms. Go right to Sidney Street Car Park and Porter Brook Pocket Park. Consider flood management. Turn back along Brown Street – Kid Acne and Phelgm. Point out Showroom Cinema – in 1930s Art Deco car showroom. Look at the other creative businesses in the area. Hub - SHU union – does the mural represent Sheffield accurately? Stand at the end and look at the view of new vs. old Park Hill. Point out Howard Street link from train station up to Millennium Galleries. Cutting Edge Sculpture, Sheaf Square, poems. Walk through station to Park Hill. Walk up the steps past the amphitheatre area to the old section and then walk back down o redeveloped area. Collect data.
