The word Chikmagalur has its own history. It is derived from the word Chikmagalur Uru which literally means younger daughters town in the native Kannada language. According to a local legend, it was given as dowry by the chief of Sakrepatna namely Rukmangada to his younger daughter. It was in Chikmagalur that the coffee was first cultivated in India by Babu Budan, a Muslim saint who came from Yemen in 1670 and started to grow coffee here.
