  • The Influence of Personal Characteristics and Reference Dependence in Risky Decision-Making for a High-Stakes Game Show
Name: Robin Rietveldt Student Number: 329975 Date: 27/06/2012 The influence of personal characteristics and reference dependence in risky decision-making for a high-stakes game show By Robin Rietveldt Erasmus University, Erasmus School of Economics _____________________________________________________________________ Abstract This paper takes a look at the decision-making of contestants in the game show “De Postcode Loterij Miljoenenjacht”, the format that is also known as “Deal or No Deal” in countries outside The Netherlands. I have sampled 41 episodes looking for differences in decision-making caused by gender and age. No significant effects were found but this might be related to the fact that the semi final has characteristics of a “selection round”. In addition I looked for signs of reference dependence in the data. The data showed “Winners” and “Losers” were less likely to deal compared to their “Neutral” counterparts. This proves that the course of the game is relevant to what decision a contestant will make at the end of the round. My theory for “Winners” not only includes effects of reference dependence but also the overvaluation of small probabilities. Keywords Decision making under risk; game show; risk preferences; risk aversion; prospect theory; deal or no deal _____________________________________________________________________ Introduction If I look back on the three years of economics education and have to name one core concept of the program that was of most importance it would be decision-making. Whether it was deciding what investment to pursue, what product to buy in the market or how to decide in games according to game theory. But knowing how to optimally decide, or decide rationally, isn’t everything.

  • British Schools Film Festival #5
BRITISH SCHOOLS FILM FESTIVAL #5 STUDY GUIDE FOR THE FILM SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE UK 2008, directed by Danny Boyle Synopsis The film starts with a young man, Jamal Malik, being interrogated and tortured by the Mumbai police. He is accused of fraud after having reached the last round of the popular TV show “Who wants to be a millionaire?” How can an uneducated young man from the Dharavi slum in Mumbai succeed in a quiz show, when even university professors failed? “I knew the answers”, says Jamal, and no, he is not a genius. During his interrogation Jamal recounts, through flashbacks, the circumstances that led him to identifying the answers correctly. The story he tells is the story of his life. Jamal grew up as a street kid in the Dharavi slum of Mumbai. His earliest memories are of kids playing on Mumbai’s streets and being chased by the police. Later he remembers the day when his brother Salim locked him in the outhouse while Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan was visiting Dharavi. In order to get himself out and ask the famous actor for an autograph, Jamal jumps into the stinking sewer. When Hindi and Muslims clash violently in the Bombay riots, Jamals mother is killed and Jamal and his brother Salim have to flee the city. During their escape they meet the “third musketeer”, Latika, a young girl who is alone on the streets as well. The children stick together and later fall into the hands of Maman, a ruthless gangster who picks up orphans and sends them to beg in the street.

Preface It is my pleasure to present to you ‘The End’ chapter of my student life: my Master thesis for the Msc. in Business Administration. During this process I have learned a lot. I have learned a lot about conducting research and my interest in science is really fuelled. I became enthusiastic about statistics. Yes, I was the one liking a Facebook page during my very first year at the University of Amsterdam stating: ‘I hate SPSS’ and now I’m searching for one that states ‘I like SPSS’. But more importantly, I have learned a lot about myself. I have learned to balance things. A word I heard before but never really understood.
