Annual Winter Concert 2012 Winslow Concert Band Presents The Wild West & the Big Band sound Programme £1.50 W d in an slo B w Concert The Wild West & the Big Band sound 7:30pm Saturday 25th February 2012 Winslow Public Hall Welcome to this year’s annual winter concert. We hope that you enjoy this year’s themes of the Wild West and the Big Band Sound. In the first half we visit the old west. Picture the scene as we travel across the plains and meet all the Cowboys and Indians on the way. After the interval we take you from the big band era onward up to the present day, bringing the full and rich sounds of the big Las Vegas Show bands to Winslow. I hope you enjoy the programme as it is being recorded for our next live CD. We are delighted to present our charity for this year, Macmillan Cancer, as our Charity of the Year 2011/2012. We have raised money for them over the year at our engagements with proceeds coming from our bucket collections, and proceeds from our ‘saloon’ this evening. This year is not only a big year nationally but also for the band, as we are looking forward to our first trip abroad. We have been invited to play at Cours La Ville as guests of the Winslow Twinning Association. We also have bookings for this year including Music in the Garden raising money for the Tingewick Church Building Fund, MAD in Waddesdon amongst others. Details of the Band's calendar will be posted on our website (www.winslowconcertband.co.uk), where you can also find our contact details should you want to discuss an event you are planning. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the band who has supported me. The players and the band committee have been exceptional and their commitment is second to none, and a big thanks to my deputy MD’s Kaz and Jane for taking the band in my absence. If you play a brass or woodwind instrument and be interested in joining us, we generally rehearse here at the Winslow Public Hall on Thursday evenings between 7.30 and 9.30. I like to think we’re a friendly lot so why not come along and give us a try. We especially are on the lookout for bass players, as we have a brand new tuba waiting for the right player. Please enjoy our concert, have fun and we look forward to seeing you again soon. We are a true community band and welcome players of all standards - one of the challenges for the Musical Director is to find music that will test the more experienced players without alarming the newer recruits! We play a wide variety of music including Big Band, jazz, musicals, film themes and hits from popular singers such as Robbie Williams, Whitney Houston and Tom Jones as well as classical numbers. Looking back on the past year the Winslow Concert Band achieved some notable performances. In June the Band were on stage at the Armed Forces Day in Aylesbury during the dramatic RAF flying display. The Winslow Band was captured on camera and their image appeared in most of the local press. 2011 also had Winslow Concert Band playing at the annual Waddesdon Manor ‘MAD’ festivities, on the same bill as Jools Holland and the Bootleg Beatles. The Band featured their Big Band Specials, including Glen Miller arrangements, with one Press reviewer describing the performance as “Pretty amazing stuff….move over Jools Holland the Winslow Band have arrived” Earlier in the year, the Band were invited to play at the Bledlow Manor charity Fete, the home of former Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington, coinciding with his 91st and producing an impromptu ‘Happy Birthday’ from the Band. Charitable performances are an important part of the Winslow Concert Band’s activities, including the annual RSPCA fund raising event, generating almost £1000 in the year for the Thames Valley Chiltern Air Ambulance. For 2012 the Band has chosen to support Macmillan Nurses with donations totalling in excess of £700 over the Christmas period alone, from well attended public carol concerts. 2011 Winter Concert Programme Overmarsh Presented by Paul How and Kaz Raffell Engineering www.overmarsh.co.uk Part 1: The Wild West Part 2: The Big Band Sound Big Band Classics (Tuxedo Junction, Serenade In Blue & Mountain Ridge Overture In The Mood) Commissioned by the Mountain Ridge Junior High Symphonic Band of Utah Glenn Miller and his Orchestra at their best! • Frank Zappa's Legacy: Just Another Hoover? L’Héritage De Frank Zappa : Juste Un Autre « Hoover »? Ben Watson
Document generated on 09/26/2021 6:09 p.m. Circuit Musiques contemporaines Frank Zappa's Legacy: Just Another Hoover? L’héritage de Frank Zappa : juste un autre « Hoover »? Ben Watson Frank Zappa : 10 ans après Article abstract Volume 14, Number 3, 2004 In "Frank Zappa's Legacy: just another Hoover?", Ben Watson reveals that when Frank Zappa referred to his "oeuvre" towards the end of his life, he URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/902325ar pronounced the French word like "Hoover", the world's most famous brand of DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/902325ar vacuum cleaner. Watson's essay starts with the proposition that Zappa's oeuvre is indeed a Hoover, a critical manoeuvre appropriate for Zappa's Dadaist See table of contents disdain for cultural values. Establishment critics currently praise Zappa's "genius" as a composer, but this removes the critical sting of his records. In fact, what made Zappa special was his recognition that both commercial commodification and the heritage industry (concepts of "genius") repress Publisher(s) desire and suppress music. In a detour into literary and psychoanalytical Les Presses de l'Université de Montréal theory, Watson's zappological algebra reaches the equation: Stéphane Mallarmé + Wilhelm Reich = Frank Zappa. After an art-historical examination of the Hoover motif in Zappa's oeuvre, Zappa's heritage is assessed today: ISSN Project/Object, the Muffin Men, The Simpsons and the improvising trio of 1183-1693 (print) Eugene Chadbourne, Jimmy Carl Black and Pat Thomas are singled out for 1488-9692 (digital) praise. “Nothing Is Real”: The Beatles as Virtual Performers Oxford Handbooks Online “Nothing Is Real”: The Beatles as Virtual Performers Philip Auslander and Ian Inglis The Oxford Handbook of Music and Virtuality Edited by Sheila Whiteley and Shara Rambarran Print Publication Date: Mar Subject: Music, Music Media 2016 Online Publication Date: Mar DOI: 10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199321285.013.13 2016 Abstract and Keywords The conventional narrative of the Beatles’ history follows the group from their days as young club performers to early retirement from the stage in summer 1966, prompted by their growing dissatisfaction with the constraints of live performance. When, in 2009, the video game The Beatles: Rock Band was released, it seemed the group had been reborn as virtual performers after an absence of several decades. However, this chapter suggests the Beatles had already become virtual performers more than forty years earlier. Close inspection of their activities during the 1960s reveals there were numerous occasions on which the group participated in musical scenarios, through their movies, animated cartoons, and promotional films, that were in fact effective simulations of the conventional performer-audience encounter. The career of the Beatles as virtual performers thus began many years before their rebirth in the world of digital animation. Keywords: mediatization, Beatles, television, movies, simulation, virtual, performance, audiences THE narrative of the Beatles is one of the most familiar in popular music’s history. It tells us that after years of limited success in the clubs of Liverpool and Hamburg, the group became the most influential and successful musical force of the 1960s; its singles and albums were, and remain, the definitive soundtrack of the decade.

  • Professor Monster – Tarefa 25 the Beatles - Still Going Strong
Professor Monster – Tarefa 25 The Beatles - still going strong Amazing! Over fifty years after they last played together (August 1969), the Beatles are still one of the most popular rock groups in the world! During the six years of their existence, they led a revolution in music. Over half a century later, their records still sell in millions every year. The Beatles, as young musicians in the 1960s In 2019, the Beatles' Abbey Road was (again) the top-selling vinyl album in the USA, with 246,000 sales. In 2014, Hollywood made a big new documentary film about the Beatles.... almost 50 years after they broke up ! In 2013, a "new" Beatles album, "On air live at the BBC - part 2" was the group's 31st top ten album in the USA ! In 1996, six million Beatles albums were sold during the year. That would be a good score for a functioning band or group; but for a group that last played together in 1969, it was incredible! In Britain, a study recently showed that the Beatles are still one of the most popular groups with people over 15 years old; and they are still popular with teenagers too. All over the world, teenagers know the tunes, and often some of the words too, of the Beatles' most famous songs. Yesterday, Penny Lane, Hey Jude and When I am Sixty Four are among the best known. Among more recent pop groups, many big names - such as Oasis, Blur or Foo Fighters - owe a lot to the Beatles, and they say so! In their album the Masterplan, Oasis did a new version of the Beatles' song I am the Walrus.
