Leeuwenberg Department of PlantTaxonomy, Wageningen Agricultural University, P.O.Box 8010, 6700Wageningen, the Netherlands Abstract Six genera of Apocynaceae have been monographed. These six are restricted to Africa, except for Petchia, which also occurs in Sri Lanka with one endemic species. The study is based on herbarium material and living plants, mostly observed and collected by the author in Madagascar. Petchia replaces the well-known genus name of Cabucala as it has priority, so six new combinations have been made here. Petchia africana from Cameroun has been described as new to science. For Carissa verticillata a new name has been proposed to replace Pichon's homonym, C.pichoniana. In all, 23 names have been reduced to synonymy, 14 of which are even synonymso fPlectaneia thouarsii.

  • Annotated Catalogue of the Ampulicidae, Crabronidae and Sphecidae (Hymenoptera) of the Malagasy Subregion
© Biologiezentrum Linz/Austria; download unter www.zobodat.at Linzer biol. Beitr. 46/2 933-1039 19.12.2014 Annotated catalogue of the Ampulicidae, Crabronidae and Sphecidae (Hymenoptera) of the Malagasy subregion M. MADL A b s t r a c t : A catalogue of the Ampulicidae (two genera, two species), Crabronidae (41 genera, 188 species and two subspecies) and Sphecidae (seven genera, 13 species) of the Malagasy subregion is provided. The gender of the genus Liris FABRICIUS, 1804 is feminine. Liris rufipes (DE SAUSSURE, 1892) and Tachysphex dimidiatus DE SAUSSURE, 1892 are valid species. The lectotype of Sphecius freyi HANDLIRSCH, 1891 is designated. Bembix aldabra PARKER, 1929 is a new synonym of Bembix madecassa DE SAUSSURE, 1890. K e y w o r d s : Ampulicidae, Crabronidae, Sphecidae, catalogue, taxonomy, type designation, new synonymy, Malagasy subregion. Introduction The sphecid wasps are currently split in three families: Ampulicidae, Crabronidae and Sphecidae. All families are known from all zoogeographical regions. The family Ampulicidae contains about 200 species worldwide, the family Crabronidae about 8800 species and the family Sphecidae about 730 species. Concerning "Sphecidae" it is a must to consult the landmark website (http://research.calacademy.org/ent/catalog_sphecidae) of W.J. Pulawski. Till now two species of the family Ampulicidae have been recorded from the Malagasy subregion, 149 species and one subspecies of the family Crabronidae and 12 species of the family Sphecidae making a total of 163 species and one subspecies. Future intensive research, especially on Madagascar, will increase the number of species. How to use the catalogue The systematic part of the catalogue is organized alphabetically.

  • (COFAV) – Madagascar
Reduced Emissions from Deforestation in the Ambositra-Vondrozo Forest Corridor (COFAV) – Madagascar Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards Project Design Document Developed By: Conservation International Version: 1.0 – 23 May, 2013 Acknowledgements Conservation International prepared this document on behalf of the Ministry of Water and Forests of Madagascar and the people living around the COFAV forest corridor. We wish to acknowledge the invaluable collaboration, support and contribution of the many organizations named in this document that have brought the COFAV project from its initial conception stage to the reality that it is today. 2 Executive Summary The Ambositra-Vondrozo Forest is located in the southern half of the humid eastern forest biome of Madagascar and is a narrow strip approximately 300 km long. A new protected area, the Ambositra-Vondrozo Forest Corridor Natural Resource Reserve is being created in this area, 135,212 hectares of which forms the project area of the Ambositra-Vondrozo Forest Corridor (COFAV) Forest Carbon Project1. The project lies on Madagascar’s eastern escarpment and links Ranomafana National Park in the north and Andringitra National Park in the south. The protection of COFAV will provide significant climate benefits through the REDD mechanism as set out in the Project Description prepared under the VCS guidelines and entitled “Reduced Emissions from Deforestation in the Ambositra-Vondrozo Forest Corridor (COFAV) – Madagascar”. It is also critically important for biodiversity as it represents one of Madagascar’s last remaining intact corridors that links areas of low, mid, and high altitude forest and allows for genetic connectivity of animal and plant populations. Over 800 species of plants and 300 species of animals have been identified in these forests, including 17 species of lemur and two highly endangered species of bamboo lemur (Hapalemur aureus and Prolemur simus).

Validation: PDD submitted for full validation of Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards, vii. History of CCBS status: first validation viii. CCBS edition: second edition ix. Project’s Climate, Community and biodiversity benefits: The protection of COFAV will provide significant climate benefits through the REDD mechanism, which aims to reduce the historical annual deforestation rate of 1 percent. The net climate impact of the project is estimated as 3,955,936 tCO2e over 10 years. It is also critically important for biodiversity as it represents one of Madagascar’s last remaining intact corridors that links areas of low, mid, and high altitude forest and allows for genetic connectivity of animal and plant populations. The protection of the corridor will also maintain the provision of freshwater for much of the center of the country as the headwaters of 25 rivers begin within this forest corridor.
