Multiple ecomorphs are present in the stick insect fauna from Papua New Guinea, including the tree lobster, spiny, and long slender forms. While ecomorphs have long been recognized in phasmids, there has yet to be an attempt to objectively define and study the evolution of these ecomorphs. -

Why don’t they know the basics of Greek and Latin? Either they don’t pay attention in class, or in many cases schools just don’t teach these classic languages of science anymore. For those who are Latin and Greek-challenged, noted (fictional) Victorian entomologist and explorer, Prof. J. Phineas Michaelson, will present English translations of the scientific names that have been given to some of the popular common arthropods available for public exhibits. This paper will explore how species get their names, as well as a brief look at some of the naturalists that named them. INTRODUCTION Our education system just isn’t what it used to be. Classic languages such as Latin and Greek are no longer a part of standard curriculum. Unfortunately, this puts modern students of science at somewhat of a disadvantage compared to our predecessors when it comes to scientific names. In the insectarium world, Latin and Greek names are used for the arthropods that we display, but for most young entomologists, these words are just a challenge to pronounce and lack meaning. Working with arthropods, we all know that Entomology is the study of these animals. Sounding similar but totally different, Etymology is the study of the origin of words, and the history of word meaning. -

The genus Metallyticus reviewed (Insecta: Mantodea) Frank Wieland Johann-Friedrich-Blumenbach-Institut für Zoologie & Anthropologie und Zoologisches Museum der Georg-August-Universität, Abteilung für Morphologie, Systematik und Evolutionsbiologie, Berliner Str. 28, 37073 Göttingen, Germany [[email protected]] Abstract Metallyticus Westwood, 1835 (Insecta: Dictyoptera: Mantodea) is one of the most fascinating praying mantids but little is known of its biology. Several morphological traits are plesiomorphic, such as the short prothorax, characters of the wing venation and possibly also the lack of discoidal spines on the fore femora. On the other hand, Metallyticus has autapomor- phies which are unique among extant Mantodea, such as the iridescent bluish-green body coloration and the enlargement of the first posteroventral spine of the fore femora. The present publication reviews our knowledge of Metallyticus thus providing a basis for further research. Data on 115 Metallyticus specimens are gathered and interpreted. The Latin original descriptions of the five Metallyticus species known to date, as well as additional descriptions and a key to species level that were originally published by Giglio-Tos (1927) in French, are translated into English. -

Some 30 members attended (including three from abroad), about half of whom gave away some 20 different species - thanks also to Tim Branney (No. 239) for coping with the surplus. Paul Brock (No. 26) showed his new video, which included shots of some "British" sticks in their natural habitats in this country. Three members showed the very latest species 91, 92 and 93~ The Committee discussed a proposal from Peter Curry to build up, in conjunc tion with the British Museum (Natural History), an up-to-date reference collection of all phasmid species within the Group, showing eggs, nymphs and adults and including morphological variations. As part of this, Tony James (No. 1) offered to collect a similar file of photographs, and members are invited to send these (preferably in colour) to him for inclusion. (Peter recommends Kodachrome 64· or 25 for goo d colour rendering.) Key words Phasmida, Culture potential, Borneo, Taxonomic assessment, Polyphagy, Monophagy Introduction At the PSG meeting at the Natural History Museum, London, on 22Dd 1995, I gave an illustrated lecture on the species of Bornean phasmids which have been reared in captivity. The talk stressed that the "culture potential" i.e. the likelihood of establishing a culture, of a given species appears to depend upon the flight capability of the species. There is a close correlation between culture potential and taxonomic position; this is not unexpected as flight capability is generally closely linked to the taxonomic position of phasmids. This article summarises the lecture. Since December 1987 I have visited Borneo on 7 occasions, spending a total of about six months on the island. Borneo is the third largest island in the world and is composed of four political units: Brunei (an independent country), Kalimantan (part of Indonesia), Sarawak (a State of Malaysia) and Sabah (also part of Malaysia). Most of my collecting has been done in Sarawak, although I spent five weeks in Kalimantan, three in Brunei, and two in Sabah. My first visit to Borneb was a two week holiday with my wife and Lee Yong Tsui in December 1987 and January 1988, during this time we stayed with Dr Lee's family in Sarawak. Although not a collecting trip, seven species were collected over two nights and five of these were bred in the UK. All subsequent trips have been made specifically to collect phasmids and, whenever possible, to attempt to rear them in the UK. -

The venue had to be altered to the Centre for Life Studies (kindly opened up by Peter Curry, No. 91) because of the sudden imposition of a heavy charge by the British Museum (Natural History). Hopefully you were all informed of this change in time. Finance - Paul Brock (No. 26) reported that the unexpectedly large number of members increased the 1986 surplus to £279, making the Group's General Fund now £866. Newsletters - Michael and Frances (No. 3) reminded members that contributions are always needed, but that longer articles may be delayed until the right amount of space becomes available. Short, or even very short, items are particularly needed. A Species Report on Phenacephorus cornucervi (PSG 73) has been provided by Chris Raper (No. 216). But of course your own notes on this species are still required and, in this case, should be sent to the Editors for insertion~ The meeting agreed to some of the Group's General Fund being spent on a computer or typewriter for the Editors' use. Library - David Robinson (No. 29) reported that his computer search for phasmid literature has been funded for another year. However, articles are classified by author only, so he is unable to select papers on a specified subject.
