7 Days Itinerary CORFU to CORFU 7 Days Itinerary Embarkation: CORFU DAY 1 CorfuCorfu COUNTESS FLAMBURIARI has said “Corfu town is Venice and Naples, a touch of France and more than a dash of England, apart of course from be- ing Greek”. The town is a maze of narrow streets dominated by the 16th century fortress. Around every corner you can find a chapel, old mansion or secret garden square. The café at the Liston: built by the French in the same style as those in Rue de Rivoli, Paris; is probably the place to ‘people watch’ while enjoying a Ginger beer. The narrow streets radiating off from the Liston, house small shops of every commercial nature. Dominated by the ‘gold shops’. Corfiot craftsmen excel at designing and making Greek jewellery in gold - this coupled with reasonable prices it may tempt you. DAY 1 CORFU SIGHTSEEINGS THE BYZANTINE TEMPLE OF SAINT SPIRIDON The church of Saint Spyridon was initially built in Sarocco square, Corfu Town. However, in 1590 it was erected in its present location. The church dominates all over the Old Town of Corfu, as its bell tower is the highest spot of the town and can be seen by the sea. The locals have deep faith in Saint Spyridon, who is considered the keeper of Corfu. ACHILLEION PALACE The Achillion Palace is ideally Achillion Palace located in the picturesque village of Gastouri. This magnificent Palace was built in 1890 exclusively for Elizabeth (Sissy), the former Empress of Austria, and was used to serve as the summer retreat of the Empress. When Sissy, passed away the palace was deserted, until it was bought by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. The impeccably landscaped palace garden is ideal for a quite walk while you can admire the artistically sculpted statues of the pantheon of Greek Achillion Palace Gods and Goddesses as well as the famous statues of the dying Achilles. PALACE OF ST. MICHAEL AND ST. GEORGE Originally the seat of the Order of Knights of Saint George and Saint Michael, was once a British governor’s mansion and a summer residence for the Greek Royal Family. Today it houses the Museum of Modern Art. -Tip: The palace sits above little Faliraki, DAY 1 CORFU with its tiny beach that’s perfect for a morning swim. It is also a great spot for a summer evening cocktail with views of the lit-up Old Fortress. MON REPOS Mon Repos Palace is a neoclas- sical building at the east of Corfu ancient city. DAY 2 Zakinthos ZAKINTHOS is one of the largest and greenest islands in the southern Ionian Sea. The gods Artemis and Apollo chose it for their own holidays for its idyllic landscapes, for its marvellous sandy beaches and for its deep blue waters and marine caves, for its enchanting sunsets and its mild climate. One of the biggest attractions of the island is the sea turtle caretta - caretta which has used the island for millions of years as a place to lay eggs. The same is true for a type of rare seal, the Monacus-Monacus found of the southwest coasts of Zakinthos. Have a swim at the wide sandy beaches in the company of sea turtles, go snorkelling or if you wish scuba dive between rocks and in underwater caves.

  • DESERTMED a Project About the Deserted Islands of the Mediterranean
DESERTMED A project about the deserted islands of the Mediterranean The islands, and all the more so the deserted island, is an extremely poor or weak notion from the point of view of geography. This is to it’s credit. The range of islands has no objective unity, and deserted islands have even less. The deserted island may indeed have extremely poor soil. Deserted, the is- land may be a desert, but not necessarily. The real desert is uninhabited only insofar as it presents no conditions that by rights would make life possible, weather vegetable, animal, or human. On the contrary, the lack of inhabitants on the deserted island is a pure fact due to the circumstance, in other words, the island’s surroundings. The island is what the sea surrounds. What is de- serted is the ocean around it. It is by virtue of circumstance, for other reasons that the principle on which the island depends, that the ships pass in the distance and never come ashore.“ (from: Gilles Deleuze, Desert Island and Other Texts, Semiotext(e),Los Angeles, 2004) DESERTMED A project about the deserted islands of the Mediterranean Desertmed is an ongoing interdisciplina- land use, according to which the islands ry research project. Jackie the Greek: e Onassis Marriage and the Hellenization of an American Icon David Wills | Neograeca Bohemica | 20 | 2020 | 9–23 | Abstract A 1968 series of satirical audio sketches concerning the marriage and lifestyle of Aristotle Onassis and Jacqueline Kennedy provides an opportunity to re- -examine the reputation of this famous couple. ese recordings connect with well-known negative assumptions – both in the contemporaneous media and in the previously restricted governmental fi les from the British National Archives used here – about Kennedy’s cynicism and Onassis’ Greek heritage.
