Lisbon has always been on my list of European cities to visit because of its appealing and unique nature. Also, the city where I’m from happens to be named Lisbon, having taken its name from the Portuguese city, so that is also why it was of interest despite the little they actually have in common. Referred to as the San Francisco of Europe, Lisbon (the one in Portugal) is a hilly, seaside city interspersed with trolleys and cafes; it even has a famous suspension bridge and frequent fog like its American counterpart.

Photos by Krysta Murray The 25th of April Bridge was originally named after Lisbon's dictoral ruler, Salazar, but was renamed after the Carnation Revolution that occurred in 1974, bringing an end to the authoritarian regime. It is the twin to San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and opened in 1966. At 7,473 feet long, it connects the Alcantara district to the Almada suburb across the the River Tagus. Across the river is the Christ the King Monument, inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, overlooking the city of Lisbon.

The history and architecture of this beautiful city dates back to the Roman and Moorish occupations that first established the city. Originally named Lisboa, which comes from the Phoenician translation for “calm port,” this city was anything but on Nov. 1, 1755 when an underwater earthquake rattled much of Europe and leveled two-thirds of Lisbon. The coastline was then pummeled Built in the 16th century, the Belém Tower is a fortress built on the Tagus River at the starting point of by a tsunami caused by the Earthquake’s tremors followed by fires that were many voyages Portuguese explorers made during the Age of Discoveries. caused by candles left burning during church services as it was the holiday, All Saints Day. With 3,000 years of history to cover, the places of worship and houses dating back to the Middle Ages. Following these morning explorations of Alfama and a lunch break, we set our sights on Belém, three miles west of the city center. You can opt to take a taxi for 15 euro from downtown Lisbon, or the slower trolley option that takes around 30 to 40 minutes. The trolley to Belém is a more modern, sleeker metro-type. We however hopped the next bus, which was also about a half hour journey. Belém withstood the destruction of the Earthquake and still shows off the grandeur of the golden age of Lisbon which culminated during the Age of the Discovery. This was the send-off and return point for many voyages during this time. The Belém Tower welcomed home Sailors, while protecting the harbor. Climb the 120 steps to the top for spectacular views of the 25th of April Bridge, Tagus River and Cristo Rei statue. The stone white tower is a fine example of Manueline Architecture, the ornate architectural style of Portugal between 1480 and 1580 under rule of King Manuel I, the Fortunate. A second, newer tower was constructed for the 1940 World Expo and then rebuilt in 1960 to honor the 500th anniversary death of Prince Henry the Navigator. The 170-foot concrete structure is named Monument to the Discoveries. In front of the elaborate monument is a marble map that displays the multiple journeys taken from Portugal to the far reaches of the world, discovering new lands and braving unknown seas. Praca do Comércio signifies the reconstruction of the city after the Great Earthquake of 1755. Hieronymite monks occupied the monastery for 400 years until the dissolution of monasteries in 1833 and the building became property of the state. The monastery is primarily of the Manueline style with multiple cloisters, tombs and a freestanding chapel. Those with children will appreciate the Museu as Criancas, a children’s interactive science museum located at the Lisbon Zoo. Belém also has several parks such as Parque das nacoes with riverside walkways, water gardens and playgrounds. While the city is very walkable and fun to visit by foot, those with children will want to take advantage of Lisbon’s many modes of transportation to avoid stairs or steep hills, especially if you have strollers. This also makes it much more fun for the kids as they get to ride elevators, funiculars, trolleys, buses and trains most of which provide excellent views of the city as well. The Jerónimos Monastery is an impressive monastery classifed as a UNESCO World Heritage Monument, symbolizes Portugal's power and wealth during the Age of Discovery. King Manual I built this in 1502 and monks of the Order of Saint Jerome known as Hieronymites resided here for 400 years, giving spiritual guidance to sailors and praying for the king's soul. The monastery is a prime example of Manueline architecture. The monastery holds the tomb of King Manuel and other Portuguese royalty. 14 February 23 , 2017 | The Coastline PCSing With Pets, What You Need to Know By Naval Station Rota Public Affairs and PSD Rota regarding the appropriate pet policy for the airline you have been booked on.
