The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints/Mormon Children’S Music: Its History, Transmission, and Place in Children’S Cognitive Development
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS/MORMON CHILDREN’S MUSIC: ITS HISTORY, TRANSMISSION, AND PLACE IN CHILDREN’S COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Colleen Jillian Karnas-Haines, Doctor of Philosophy, 2005. Dissertation Directed by: Professor Robert C. Provine Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology School of Music The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a children’s auxiliary program for ages three to eleven that meets weekly before or after their Sunday worship service. This auxiliary, called Primary, devotes much of its time to singing. Music is not a childish diversion, but an essential activity in the children’s religious education. This study examines the history of the songbooks published for Primary use, revealing the many religious and cultural factors that influence the compilations. The study then looks at the modern methods of transmission as the author observes the music education aspects of Primary. Lastly, the study investigates the children’s use of and beliefs about Primary music through the lens of cognitive development. The study reveals that Primary music is an ever-evolving reflection of the theology, cultural trends, and practical needs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Unaware of such implications, the children use Primary music to express their religious musicality at cognitive developmentally appropriate levels. THE SECULARIZATION OF THE REPERTOIRE OF THE MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR, 1949-1992 Mark David Porcaro A dissertation submitted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music (Musicology) Chapel Hill 2006 Approved by Advisor: Thomas Warburton Reader: Severine Neff Reader: Philip Vandermeer Reader: Laurie Maffly-Kipp Reader: Jocelyn Neal © 2006 Mark David Porcaro ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT MARK PORCARO: The Secularization of the Repertoire of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, 1949-1992 (Under the direction of Thomas Warburton) In 1997 in the New Yorker, Sidney Harris published a cartoon depicting the “Ethel Mormon Tabernacle Choir” singing “There’s NO business like SHOW business...” Besides the obvious play on the names of Ethel Merman and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the cartoon, in an odd way, is a true-to-life commentary on the image of the Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Choir (MTC) in the mid-1990s; at this time the Choir was seen as an entertainment ensemble, not just a church choir. This leads us to the central question of this dissertation, what changes took place in the latter part of the twentieth century to secularize the repertoire of the primary choir for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS)? In the 1860s, when the MTC began, its sole purpose was to perform for various church meetings, in particular for General Conference of the LDS church which was held in the Tabernacle at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. From the beginning of the twentieth century and escalating during the late 1950s to the early 1960s, the Choir’s role changed from an in-house choir for the LDS church to a choir that also fulfilled a cultural and entertainment function, not only for the LDS church but also for the American public at large. -

Swansea-born Lizzie Thomas Edward sings for the President of the United States Jill Morgan June 2020 Christened Mary Elizabeth, ‘Lizzie’ Thomas was born in Swansea in 1866 to Thomas Parry Thomas and his wife Sarah. The family lived in Aberdyberthi Street, Hafod, at the time of the 1871 census but shortly thereafter emigrated to America. Converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints [‘Mormons’] since before their marriage, Thomas and Sarah took their young family to Liverpool for passage aboard the Wyoming,1 heading for Salt Lake City in what was then Utah Territory. Early converts to the ‘Mormon’ church were encouraged to emigrate to strengthen the church in America and avoid the opposition they all too often encountered to their ‘new’ religion. The Thomas family were among thousands of Welsh converts who left home between 1845 and 1900. They would have found Salt Lake City to be a well-established, bustling place of about 13,000 souls, which would almost double its population within ten years. They arrived by train, as the Transcontinental Railroad had been completed, shortening the journey from months to just a few weeks. The Thomas family were evidently musical. Lizzie, her brother Moroni and her sister Sadie sang with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir2. And at age 15 Lizzie was singing solo, featuring in the programmes for both the capstone ceremony for the Salt Lake City temple, and a year later at the temple dedication. European Roots Lead to Choir's Musical Excellence
EUROPEAN ROOTS LEAD TO CHOIR’S MUSICAL EXCELLENCE The success and signature sound of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square is a result of more than a century of talented, hard-working men and women, particularly the influence of musical conductors from Europe. Six of the 15 conductors of the Choir have roots in the British Isles: three came from England, two from Wales, and one from Ireland. These individuals helped build a strong foundation for the Choir’s world-renowned music. The first conductor of the Choir, John Parry, was an early Welsh convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After the 1849 general conference of the Church, where Parry led 85 Welsh converts in singing, Brigham Young asked Parry to formalise a choir to provide music for future conferences. Parry organised what became known as the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir and now The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. Twenty years later, George Edward Percy Careless took up the baton for the Choir. He was born in London on September 24, 1839. At the age of eleven, he was baptised and became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As George grew to maturity, he became increasingly concerned about his diminutive physical size. On one occasion during these years, he found himself outside Parliament as Lord Palmerston (then Prime Minister) and Lord John Russell came out of the building. Lord Palmerston was a large man, but Lord Russell was as small as George.
