  • The Veladero High-Sulfidation Epithermal Au-Ag Deposit
THE VELADERO HIGH-SULFIDATION EPITHERMAL AU-AG DEPOSIT, ARGENTINA: VOLCANIC STRATIGRAPHY, ALTERATION, MINERALIZATION, AND QUARTZ PARAGENESIS by Elizabeth A. Holley A thesis submitted to the Faculty and the Board of Trustees of the Colorado School of Mines in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Geology). Golden, Colorado Date _________________ Signed:___________________________ Elizabeth A. Holley Signed:___________________________ Dr. Thomas Monecke Thesis Advisor Golden, Colorado Date _________________ Signed:___________________________ Dr. J. D. Humphrey Associate Professor and Head Department of Geology and Geological Engineering ii ABSTRACT The Veladero Au-Ag high-sulfidation epithermal deposit is located in the El Indio-Pasuca belt in Argentina. Veladero is an oxidized deposit that contained reserves of 12.2 Moz of Au and 226.2 Moz of Ag at the end of 2008. Ore is primarily hosted in silicified breccias. The volcanic package at Veladero is a coalescing complex of domes, diatremes, and hydrothermal breccia bodies, mantled by a thick apron of volcaniclastic deposits. These units are inferred to be of Cerro de las Tórtolas age (16.0 ± 0.2 to 14.9 ± 0.7 Ma) at Amable in the southern part of the Veladero area, and Vacas Heladas age (12.7 ± 0.9 to 11.0 ± 0.2 Ma) at Filo Federico in the northern part of Veladero. Emplacement of hydrothermal breccia units was accompanied or shortly followed by multiple pulses of magmatic-hydrothermal and alternating jarosite alteration from about 15.4 to 8.9 Ma. Alunite and jarosite 40Ar-39Ar ages and U-Pb zircon ages of crosscutting dikes restrict mineralization at Amable to the period from 15.4 to 12.14 0.11 Ma, probably commencing closer to 12.7 Ma.

  • ABSTRACT James Ronald Welch, MOVING from the MIDDLE
ABSTRACT James Ronald Welch, MOVING FROM THE MIDDLE: AN EXPLORATION OF STUDENT EXPERIENCES TRANSITIONING TO HIGH SCHOOL IN INTERNATIONAL SETTINGS (Under the direction of Dr. Matthew Militello). Department of Educational Leadership, March 2019. The current study sought to understand the stress of the eighth grade to high school transition at the International School Bangkok (ISB) and make recommendations for improving this experience. Transitioning from middle school to high school is one of the most stressful events in an adolescent’s life due to physiological and social-emotional changes they experience at this time. Twelve students from the American, Thai, Japanese, and Korean communities were followed for their first three high school semesters to understand the difficulties of the middle school to high school transition. These students, along with four counselors at the school, were my Co-Practitioner-Researchers (CPR), and through their experiences, we came to understand the struggles involved in this transition at the ISB. Collection of data in participatory action research (PAR) Cycle 1 was through a transition survey and CPR drawings of the most stressful aspect of the transition, which I clarified in an interview. In PAR Cycle 2, CPR members photographed the most stressful part of the transition, then reaching consensus themes as a group. Students kept a weekly diary of time usage. In PAR Cycle 3, the CPR team completed a survey of the stress of the tenth- grade transition. Interviews with students and counselors were analyzed. Finally, a community learning exchange (CLE) was conducted at the end of Cycle 3 to present the study findings to ISB colleagues.

  • Facts to Confirm
Evaluating the experience of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the career histories of elite equestrian athletes By Donna de Haan A Doctoral Thesis Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy of Loughborough University March 2015 © D. de Haan 2015 ABSTRACT Equestrian sport has been present on the Modern Olympic programme since 1900 with Para-Equestrian Dressage making its debut at the 1996 Paralympic Games. Due to the combined governance of Olympic and Paralympic versions of the sport, the mixed gender of competition and the potential age range of competitors, equestrian sport provides an opportunity through which to understand a unique context of athlete experience. This thesis has sought to identify and evaluate athlete experience within the context of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and to place this experience within the wider career histories of members of the British Equestrian Team. This study utilised a combination of a systematic literature review methodology and ethnographic data collection and analysis with a critical realist approach, creating a framework that values interpretive insights into how the subjects perceive and construct their world whilst at the same time considering ways in which the literature and individual subjects identify, comment on, and frame the reality of the world of equestrian sport. This study has resulted in the emergence of six themes pertaining to experiencing the games; equestrian sporting culture, identity, values, challenges, performance support and success. Results show many similarities and shared experiences for both the Olympic and Paralympic equestrian athletes. The differences regarding the lived experience for these athletes are predominantly associated with the development of the sport, the relative short Paralympic history of equestrian sport in comparison to the Olympic disciplines, and the place of the Games in the context of the riders’ career histories.

  • Organized Prostitution and the Jews of Buenos Aires
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Polacos, White Slaves, and Stille Chuppahs: Organized Prostitution and the Jews of Buenos Aires, 1890-1939 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History by Mir Hayim Yarfitz 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Polacos, White Slaves, and Stille Chuppahs: Organized Prostitution and the Jews of Buenos Aires, 1890-1939 by Mir Hayim Yarfitz Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles Professor José C. Moya, Chair This dissertation explores the particularly prominent role of Jews in coercive sex trafficking, then called white slavery in Buenos Aires when it was considered to be the world capital. The project aims to de-exoticize the subject by comparing Jewish pimps and prostitutes to other immigrants, grounding them in the neighborhoods they lived in, exploring the concrete concerns of their opponents, and connecting the broader discourses around these issues to transnational conversations about migration, sexuality, and the significance of race, ethnicity, and nationhood – the establishment of the boundaries of whiteness – in the furor around white slavery. I introduce new evidence about the Zwi Migdal Society (also called the Varsovia Society), a powerful mutual aid ii and burial association of Jewish pimps based in the Argentine capital. Ostracized by the nascent Argentine Jewish community, the Zwi Migdal Society nonetheless developed the same communal structures as those found in conventional voluntary immigrant associations: a burial society, a synagogue, health benefits, and peer recognition. My archival discoveries underline the significance of this battle to the local Jewish community's centralization and the shifting international articulation of norms around morality, marriage, family, and labor, and develop a history that opens into larger issues of migration, identity, women’s agency and transatlantic politics.

Abstract This paper examines the process of feminization of South American intra-regional migration, with emphasis in the Southern Cone. It describes recent changes and trends, and addresses some of the most salient issues on the participation and experiences of female migrants. It deals with the social and economic reasons underlying the increasing autonomous migration of women, particularly on the interconnections between the South-American economic restructuring and the increasing demand of female migrants by the service and care sectors.
