the 49th Annual Urban Affairs Association Conference, we welcome participants to Los Angeles, the City of Angels, located in a region that is as diverse as it is beautiful and economically vibrant. Our committee includes faculty members from five universities in the Southern California region: California State University, Los Angeles; California State University, Long Beach; University of California, Irvine; University of California Los Angeles (the conference host campus); and University of Southern California. We represent a diverse range of urban scholarship in the fields of Environmental Studies, Geography, Political Science, Public Policy, Urban Planning and Urban Studies. Collectively, we have labored to create an engaging conference experience. We embraced the opportunity to create a series of events and local tours that showcase the city’s strengths, address challenges we face as a region, and consider how we collectively contribute to creating solutions. The Opening Plenary is set to kick off the con- ference with a focus on affordable housing and homelessness – a wicked problem many perceive as the most pressing local challenge of the last half century. The discussion, Rights to Decent Housing: Local Lessons on Housing Affordability, Supply and Homelessness, to be held on April 24th at 4:00pm, will feature three compelling personalities whose responses will include critical discussions about an extremely ambitious local response to home- lessness implemented by Los Angelenos to date, a homelessness sales tax estimated to generate $355 million annually to address homelessness. We hope that your cup runneth over from your LA experience, enjoy!
