As in the previous years I am very grateful to the ASIAN ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION and its secretary and treasurer, Mr Maurice Nicholas as well as to Mrs Regina Long; without their support I would not have been able to realise this project. Just as for the previous editions the publication of such detailed continental rankings was possible only thanks to valuable help from various statisticians and federations. Unfortunately it was impossible for me and my friends to get the necessary information from the remaining countries in spite of many inquiries; therefore again the leading performers from those countries (esp. their performances at major national competitions in BAN, BRN, IRQ, KSA, LAO, MAC, OMA, QAT, SYR and UAE) couldn´t be enclosed to these area rankings due to the missing cooperation by the officials from these ASIAN AA Member Federations, who decided to exclude their best athletes from these rankings for the ASIAN AA as well as from IAAF publications (World Senior/Junior/Youth 2017 Rankings, IAAF National Records database) and from different other World Athletics Rankings publications. All readers are kindly invited to send any additions and/or corrections to the lists as well as 2018 information to the editor and/or to the ASIAN AA. 2 D e t a i l s Just as in the previous editions, the 2017 rankings are divided into two sections in order to show the leading performances from as many Asian countries as possible in addition to the continental Top 30 annual lists, which mainly consist of results by athletes from the two leading countries, China and Japan. The division is as follows: a) Asian Top 30 lists (more performers, however, when there are more than 30 athletes among or at least close to the “World TOP 100”) b) other next best performances restricted to 4 performers per country for each event. Additional results (i.e. windy marks, indoor performances and national records outside the limits above) are given in separate sections. For all events up to 400m, main lists are given with fully automatic timing only, but, following the policy of the IAAF, better hand-timed results are also added (with a differential of 0.24 seconds for sprints respectively 0.14 seconds for 400m, 400m hurdles and 4x100 m). I have added those performers with better hand-times separately at the end of each event. New Asian records are indicated by ´AsR´, new Asian indoor records by ´AIR`, new Asian junior records by ´AJR´ and all new national records by ´NR´. In addition, new national indoor records are shown by `NIR`, but only when better than the relevant national records outdoors. Exact dates of birth are given where available in the following format: 150598 = 15 May 1998. Those juniors whose exact birthdates are not known are denoted with ´jr´ (i.e. born 1998 or later). For the walks combined lists are given, including both track results (indicated by times given with 1/10 or 1/100 seconds and ´t´) and marks from road races (listed in full seconds only).     NEWSLETTER 2020 POOVAMMA ENJOYING TRANSITION TO SENIOR STATESMAN ROLE IN DYNAMIC RELAY SQUAD M R Poovamma has travelled a long way from being the baby of the Indian athletics contingent in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing to being the elder FEATURED ATHLETE statesman in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. She has experienced the transition, slipping into the new role MR Poovamma (Photo: 2014 Incheon Asian Games @Getty) effortlessly and enjoying the process, too. “It has been a different experience over the past couple of years. Till 2017, I was part of a squad that had runners who were either as old as me or a couple of years older. But now, most of the girls in the team are six or seven years younger than I am,” she says from Patiala. “On the track they see me as a competitor but outside, they look up to me like a member of their family.” The lockdown, forced by the Covid-19 outbreak, and the aftermath have given her the opportunity to don the leadership mantle. “For a couple of months, I managed the workout of the other girls. I enjoyed the role assigned to me,” says the 30-year-old. “We were able to maintain our fitness even during lockdown.” Poovamma reveals that the women’s relay squad trained in the lawn in the hostel premises. “It was a change off the track. We hung out together. It was not like it was a punishment, being forced to stay away from the track and the gym. Khelo India has the following twelve verticals: Under the vertical Annual Sports Competitions, the 1st Khelo India Games were organized in 2018. The 2nd edition was held in 2019 which saw participation of athletes from across India in U-17 & U-21 age categories. The 3rd Khelo India Youth Games were organized in Guwahati from 10th January – 22nd January 2020. This year, the University Games have been planned to be held separately at Bhubaneswar in association with the Govt. of Odisha, Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and KIIT University from 22nd Feb to 1st Mar 2020. These games will be called “Khelo India University Games, Odisha 2020”. Concept Khelo India University Games (KIUG – 2020) will be organized in Under-25 age group (Men & Women). The competition will be amongst the top Universities in 17 sports disciplines from 22nd February – 1st March 2020 at Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
