Mycosphere 5(1), 27–76, Doi 10.5943/mycosphere/5/1/2 Abstract A total of 36 species of Hypogymnia are known from southwestern China. This region is a center of biodiversity for the genus. Hypogymnia capitata, H. nitida, H. saxicola, H. pendula, and H. tenuispora are newly described species from Yunnan and Sichuan. Olivetoric acid is new as a major lichen substance in Hypogymnia, occurring only in H. capitata. A key and illustrations are given for the species known from this region, along with five species from adjoining regions that might be confused or have historically been misidentified in this region. Key words – Lecanorales – lichenized ascomycetes – Parmeliaceae – Shaanxi – Sichuan – Tibet – Yunnan – Xizang. Introduction The first major collections of Hypogymnia from southwestern China were by Handel- Mazzetti, from which Zahlbruckner (1930) reported six species now placed in Hypogymnia, and Harry Smith (1921-1934, published piecewise by other authors; Herner 1988). Since the last checklist of lichens in China (Wei 1991), which reported 16 species of Hypogymnia from the southwestern provinces, numerous species of Hypogymnia from southwestern China have been described or revised (Chen 1994, Wei & Bi 1998, McCune & Obermayer 2001, McCune et al.

  • TAXODIACEAE.Publishe
Flora of China 4: 54–61. 1999. 1 TAXODIACEAE 杉科 shan ke Fu Liguo (傅立国 Fu Li-kuo)1, Yu Yongfu (于永福)2; Robert R. Mill3 Trees evergreen, semievergreen, or deciduous, monoecious; trunk straight; main branches ± whorled. Leaves spirally arranged or scattered (decussate in Metasequoia), monomorphic, dimorphic, or trimorphic on same tree, lanceolate, subulate, scalelike, or linear. Microsporophylls and cone scales spirally arranged (decussate in Metasequoia). Pollen cones borne in panicles, or solitary or clustered at branch apices, or axillary, small; microsporangia with (2 or)3 or 4(–9) pollen sacs; pollen nonsaccate. Seed cones terminal or borne near apex of previous year’s growth, ripening in 1st year, persistent or late deciduous; cone scales developing after ovules originate in bract axils; bracts and cone scales usually spirally aranged (decussate in Metasequoia), sessile, opening when ripe (falling in Taxodium), semiconnate and free only at apex, or completely united; bracts occasionally rudimentary (in Taiwania); ovules 2–9 per bract axil, erect or pendulous; cone scales of mature cones flattened or shield-shaped, woody or leathery, 2–9-seeded on abaxial side. Seeds flat or triangular, wingless (in Taxodium), narrowly winged all round or on 2 sides, or with a long wing on proximal part. Cotyledons 2–9. 2n = 22*. Nine genera and 12 species: Asia, North America, and (Athrotaxis D. Don) Tasmania; eight genera (one endemic, three introduced) and nine species (one endemic, four introduced) in China. A merger of the Taxodiaceae and Cupressaceae is increasingly supported by both morphological and molecular evidence (see note under Cupressaceae). However, the two groups are kept as separate families here for pragmatic reasons.

Thus, topography should contain a record of these processes that can be extracted by topographic analysis. The question considered in this study is whether the spatial variations in erosion that have sculpted the modern topography are representative of the long-term erosion rates in mountainous regions. We compare long-term erosion rates derived from low-temperature thermochronometry to erosional proxies calculated from topographic and climatic data analysis. The study has been performed on a global scale including six orogens: The Himalaya, Andes, Taiwan, Olympic Mountains, Southern Alps in New Zealand and European Alps. The data was analyzed using a new swath profile analysis tool for ArcGIS called ArcSwath to determine the correlations between the long-term erosion rates and modern elevations, slope angles, relief in 2.5-km- and 5-km-diameter circles, erosion potential, normalized channel steepness index ksn, and annual rainfall.

  • Mountains in Asia and Their Location
Mountains in asia and their location Continue Wikipedia's List of Asian Terrain articles This page lists the highest natural altitude of each sovereign country on the geographically defined Asian continent. Countries sometimes associated with Asia politically and culturally, but not as a geographical part of Asia, are not included in this list of physical characteristics (with the exception of Cyprus - marked with an N/A rating). Not all of the points on this list are mountains or hills, some are simply in distinguishable altitudes as geographical characteristics. Notes are provided in case of territorial disputes or conflicts affecting the list. Some countries such as Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Russia (Elbrus) have part of their territory and their high points outside Asia; Their non-Asian high scores are listed with an N/A rated entry below their continental peak. Three other entoes from the most recognized countries with the highest scores in Asia are listed and ranked in Inalic. For more details, see List of states with limited recognition. ISSN (print) 0093-4666 © 2011. Mycotaxon, Ltd. ISSN (online) 2154-8889 MYCOTAXON Volume 115, pp. 485–494 January–March 2011 doi: 10.5248/115.485 Hypogymnia irregularis (Ascomycota: Parmeliaceae)— a new species from Asia Bruce McCune Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331-2902 U.S.A. Correspondence to: [email protected] Abstract — Hypogymnia irregularis is newly described from southwest China, Nepal, Japan, and Taiwan. Similar in growth form to H. vittata, H. irregularis differs in always lacking soredia and having staggered, lateral, or almost randomly located perforations in the lower surface. In contrast, H. vittata usually produces soredia and has perforations more centered in the lower surface and axils. Hypogymnia vittata is known from Asia, North America, Central America, and Europe, while H. irregularis is endemic to Asia. Hypogymnia irregularis is postulated as being the fertile species that is the closest living relative to the sorediate H. vittata. Another Asian species, H. stricta, can be similar in appearance to H. irregularis and H. vittata, but can be differentiated both morphologically and chemically from those two. Key words — Lecanorales, lichenized ascomycetes, lichenized fungi, Yunnan Province Introduction Since the last checklist of lichens in China (Wei 1991), numerous species of Hypogymnia from Asia have been described or revised (Chen 1994, Elix & Jenkins 1989, McCune et al. 2002, McCune & Obermayer 2001, Sinha & Elix 2003, Tchabanenko & McCune 2001, Wei & Bi 1998, Wei & Wei 2005, Wei et al. 2010). But still this center of diversity for Hypogymnia, particularly in southwestern China, holds additional undescribed species. This paper describes a species that can be one of the dominant lichens in the high-mountain Abies forests of southwest China and also occurs in Nepal, Taiwan, and Japan.

  • Tree of the Year : Taiwania Cryptomerioides
Tree of the Year : Taiwania cryptomerioides JOHN GRIMSHAW writes about Taiwania cryptomerioides Hayata, a very large coniferous tree in the family Cupressaceae, native to Taiwan, Myanmar, western China and Vietnam. It has distinct juvenile and mature growth forms and foliage, becoming fertile only with maturity. It can achieve 70m in the wild, and produces good, decay-resistant, high-value timber. Exploitation has left populations greatly reduced in the wild and its IUCN Red Data list status is Vulnerable, with the Vietnamese population considered Critically Endangered. Introduced from Taiwan in 1918 by E. H. Wilson, and now widely grown, it is most successful in areas with warm or hot summers, forming a shapely conical tree with pendulous branches in youth. It is hardy to -15°C (at least), USDA Hardiness Zone 7 in Europe and North America. Foreword As a young gardener and botany student I was more or less familiar with the ‘standard range’ of British native and ornamental woody plants, but had never given trees much attention: they were just there. Then, in the early summer of 1989, I joined a group visiting Batsford Arboretum where the late Lord Dulverton gave us an introductory talk. In it, he said how proud he was of 24 the Taiwania he had got established. I had read about the species in Kingdon- Ward’s posthumous Pilgrimage for Plants (1960) and piped-up something about it being a ‘coffin-tree’. Lord Dulverton seemed not to be aware of this, but was keen that I should see the tree in question. To do this, we got into his sleek Jaguar and drove up the grassy slope to as close as possible to what was then still a young tree.
