THE PHILOSOPHY of STEVEN SODERBERGH the Philosophy of Popular Culture
THE PHILOSOPHY OF STEVEN SODERBERGH The Philosophy of Popular Culture Th e books published in the Philosophy of Popular Culture series will illuminate and explore philosophical themes and ideas that occur in popular culture. Th e goal of this series is to demonstrate how philosophical inquiry has been reinvigorated by increased scholarly interest in the intersection of popular culture and philosophy, as well as to explore through philosophical analysis beloved modes of entertainment, such as movies, TV shows, and music. Philosophical concepts will be made accessible to the general reader through examples in popular culture. Th is series seeks to publish both established and emerging scholars who will engage a major area of popular culture for philosophical interpretation and examine the philosophical underpinnings of its themes. Eschewing ephemeral trends of philosophical and cultural theory, authors will establish and elaborate on connections between traditional philosophical ideas from important thinkers and the ever-expanding world of popular culture. Disciplining the Transgendered: Brandon Teena, Public Representation, and Nonnativity
"Western ,Journal of Communication, 64(2) (Spring 2000),165-189 Disciplining the Transgendered: Brandon Teena, Public Representation, and Nonnativity John Mo Sloop "How can we have a discussion of how much sex and gender diversity actually exists in society, when an the mechanisw..s of legal and extralegal repression render our lives invisible?" (Feinberg 102). "P.e-enviilioning rhetoric as a constructor of gender rather than as constructed by gender is an essential step toward ... liberation" (Condit 110). HE CORE OF THE STORY of Brandon Teena is fascinating enough, and T emotional enough, that most people remember its outline with very little prompting. This story was retold repeatedly and widely, in local newspapers, as well as in The Village Voice and Playboy. It has been the subject of a true crime book, multiple web sites, a play, a documentary film (The Brandon Teena Story), a feature film (Boys Don't Cry), and the first on-line Guggenheim art project,! The bare bones of the story, as recounted through mass mediated outlets, go something like this: Bran don Teena (born Teena Brandon)2 was a 21 year old woman who moved from Lincoln, Nebraska, where she had been "living as a man," to the smaller town of Falls City, Nebraska in late 199303 'While Brandon's move was prompted by a number of brushes with the law based on his tendency to forge checks and use credit cards without permission, it was also a move that allowed Brandon a fresh start with a male identity in a community where he had no history as a woman. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: May 17, 2016 Chalena Cadenas 310.360.1981 [email protected] Sundance Institute Announces New ‘FilmTwo’ Initiative to Support SecondTime Feature Filmmakers Created with Support from Founding Partner NBCUniversal Expansion of Signature Programs Addresses Unique Challenges and Barriers to Sustainable Filmmaking Careers 13 Filmmakers Selected for Inaugural FilmTwo Fellowship Andrew Ahn | Shaz Bennett | Bernardo Britto | Steven Caple Jr. | Jonas Carpignano | Marta Cunningham | Alistair Banks Griffin Siân Heder | Marielle Heller | Anna Rose Holmer | Crystal Moselle | Felix Thompson | Yared Zeleke Los Angeles, CA — Sundance Institute today announced a significant expansion of its signature artist development programs to include targeted support for secondtime feature filmmakers, addressing a growing need in the field of independent storytelling, especially for women and filmmakers of color. The new FilmTwo Initiative, led by the Institute’s renowned Feature Film Program, with generous support from Founding Partner NBCUniversal, will offer selected directors specialized creative and tactical guidance in navigating the unique challenges of making their second feature films. The Initiative’s inaugural Fellows announced today participated in a Screenwriters Intensive in March and continue to receive customized creative and tactical support and participate in select FFP activities. The FilmTwo Initiative was created to provide support to a diverse group of independent filmmakers in response to the specific challenges they face in developing and completing their second feature film, often the greatest barrier to a sustainable career as a filmmaker. These include identifying and/or writing their second project, defining their distinctive voice, scaling up and creating more ambitious projects in terms of budget and scope and a dearth of development financing. -

WHICH BODIES COUNT WHEN THEY ARE BASHED?: AN ARGUMENT FOR THE INCLUSION OF TRANSGENDERED INDMDUALS IN THE HATE CRIMES PREVENTION ACT OF 1999 KARA S. SUFFREDINI* DANGEROUS LIAISONS: BLACKS, GAYS, AND THE STRUGGLE FOR EQUALITY. Edited by Eric Brandt. New York: The New Press. 1999. Pp. 312. On average, one transgendered individual is reported murdered every month. This high statistic does not account for hate crimes against trans gendered individuals that are either not reported or are misrecorded as crimes motivated by sexual orientation bias. In this Book Review, the author explores this epidemic of violence against transgendered individuals.
