The NCEF was subjected to detect the presence of various phytoconstituents. In acute oral toxicity study, graded doses of NCEF was administered in mice and were observed up to 14 days. In sub-chronic oral toxicity study, NCEF was admin- istered to Wistar rats at doses of 50, 500 and 1000 mg/kg b.w. per day for 90 days and after that, observed up to 28 days. NCEF showed the presence of alkaloids, steroids, phenolics and glycosides. In acute toxicity study, there was no mortality and no behavioural signs of toxicity at the highest dose level (6400 mg/kg b.w.). -

llllllllllllllllllllllllllllll PUFF /MFN 9702 Malayan Nature Joumal200l, 55 (1 & 2): 133 ~ 146 The Significance of Gynoecium and Fruit and Seed Characters for the Classification of the Rubiaceae CHRISTIAN(PUFF1 Abstract: This paper attempts to give a survey of the highly diverse situation found in the gynoecium (especially ovary) of the Rubiaceae (multi-, pluri-, pauci- and uniovulate locules; reduction of ovules and septa in the course of development, etc.). The changes that can take place after fertilisation (i.e., during fruit and seed development) are discussed using selected examples. An overview of the many diverse types of fruits and seeds of the Rubiaceae is presented. In addition, the paper surveys the diaspores (dispersal units) found in the family and correlates them with the morphological-anatomical situation. Finally, selected discrepancies between "traditional" classification systems of the Rubiaceae and recent cladistic analyses are discussed. While DNA analyses and cladistic studies are undoubtedly needed and useful, it is apparent that detailed (comparative) morphological-anatomical studies of gynoecium, fruits and seeds can significantly contribute to the solution of"problem cases" and should not be neglected, Future cladistic :work should, therefore, more generously include such data. INTRODUCTION The Rubiaceae, with approximately 11 ,000 species and more than 630 genera (Mabberley 1987, Robbrecht 1988), is one of the five largest families of angiosperms. Although centred in the tropics and subtropics and essentially woody, the family also extends to temperate regions and exhibits a wide array of growth forms, with some tribes having herbaceous, and even annual members. Not surprisingly, floral, fruit and seed characters also show considerable diversity. -

The cytotoxicity of the isolated alkaloids has been evaluated against cancer cell lines. The first two compounds showed only weak activity against HL-60 cell line, while hodgkinsine was the most active compound against HCT-116, OVCAR-8, HL-60 and SF-295 cancer cell lines. -

Tabebuia roseo-alba Tabebuia roseo-alba, known as white ipê, ipê-branco or lapacho blanco, is a Tabebuia roseo-alba tree native to Cerrado and Pantanal vegetation in Brazil, but also appears in Argentina (especially in the "Esteros del Ibera" wetlands) and more rarely in Paraguay. Botanical assessments in the Philippines are mostly conducted on declared Protected Areas (PAs). However, many remaining potentially interesting and largely unexplored floristic sites are not considered PA, one of which is the Mt. Pao Range in the Municipality of Adams, located in Ilocos Norte, Philippines. Among the flowering plant family, Rubiaceae is one with the largest number of endemic species and genera in the Philippines Thus, floristic surveys of Rubiaceae species were conducted, and collections were made from September 2019 to March 2021. A total of 39 species belonging to 13 tribes and 24 genera of the family were recorded. These constitute 7.09% of the total Philippine Rubiaceae. -

It claimed the lives of several million people and inflicted cruel and inhuman treatments on hundreds of million people. However, 40 years after it ended, the total number of victims of the Cultural Revolution and especially the death toll of mass killings still remain a mystery both in China and overseas. For the Chinese communist government, it is a highly classified state secret, although they do maintain statistics for the so-called abnormal death numbers all over China. Nevertheless, the government, realizing that the totalitarian regime and the endless power struggles in the CCP Central Committee (CCP CC) were the root cause of the Cultural Revolution, has consistently discounted the significance of looking back and reflecting on this important period of Chinese history. They even forbid Chinese scholars from studying it independently and discourage overseas scholars from undertaking research on this subject in China. Owing to difficulties that scholars in and outside China encounter in accessing state secrets, the exact figure of the abnormal death has become a recurring debate in the field of China studies. -

Based on morphological evidence, previous authors have hypothesized a Florida origin from either Q. geminata or Q. virginiana or both; a Mexican origin from Q. oleoides; or a hybrid origin from both sources. We use molecular data and taxonomically informative leaf morphology to identify the source species and timing of colonization. Location Cuba, Central America, Mexico and the south-eastern United States. Methods We collected representative samples of Cuban oaks and each putative source species and genotyped each sample at 12 nuclear microsatellites and two chloroplast DNA sequences. We estimated population structure using a Bayesian clustering analysis and F-statistics, pairwise migration rates among taxa, and divergence time using an isolation-with-migration model. We measured seven leaf traits and conducted an analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) to determine which putative source species was most similar to Cuban oaks. Results Cuban oak contains one chloroplast DNA haplotype, which is common in southern Florida. Bayesian clustering analysis of microsatellites revealed that the Cuban oak forms a distinct and pure population cluster, and F-statistics showed that Cuban oaks are differentiated least from Q. virginiana and most from Q. -
