  • A Christian Midrash on Ezekiel's Temple Vision
FINDING JESUS IN THE TEMPLE A Christian Midrash on Ezekiel's Temple Vision PART THREE: Ezekiel’s Temple and the Temple of Talmud by Emil Heller Henning III THE WORD OF THE LORD came expressly unto Ezekiel...And I [saw] a great cloud...And out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures...And every one had four faces, and...four wings...[which] were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward...[Each] had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and...the face of an ox on the left side; they...also had the face of an eagle...And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go...And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creatures was as…crystal, stretched forth over their heads...I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the voice of an host [or “the din of an army”]...Over their heads was the likeness of a throne...[and the] appearance of a man above upon it…This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard a voice of one that spoke. – from Ezekiel 1.3-28 AND DAVID MY SERVANT shall be king over them; and they shall have one shepherd...I will make a covenant of peace with them; and it shall be an ever- lasting covenant with them...My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

  • Assorted Matters,The Valmadonna Broadside
Assorted Matters Assorted Matters Marc B. Shapiro My next post will take some time to prepare, but there are some other matters that I want to bring to readers’ attention, in particular a few books that I recently received. Due to space considerations, I couldn’t include these in my last post. 1. For those interested in the history of Lithuanian yeshivot, the last few years have been very fruitful. In 2014 Ben-Tsiyon Klibansky’s Ke-Tzur Halamish appeared. This book is a study of the yeshivot from World War I until the destruction of European Jewry. 2015 saw the appearance of Geoffrey D. Claussen’s Sharing the Burden: Rabbi Simhah Zissel Ziv and the Path of Mussar.[1]In January 2016 Shlomo Tikoshinski’s long- awaited book appeared. Its title isLamdanut, Musar ve- Elitizm: Yeshivat Slobodka me-Lita le-Eretz Yisrael. The book can be purchased here. Eliezer Brodt is also selling the book and a portion of each sale will go to support the efforts of the Seforim Blog, so I also encourage purchasing from him. This outstanding book is full of new information, and Tikoshinski had access to a variety of private archives and letters that help bring to life a world now lost. Lamdanut, Musar ve-Elitizm is also a crucial source in understanding the development of religious life in Eretz Yisrael in the two decades before the creation of the State. When you read about the Slobodka students, and later the students of Chevron, it is impossible not to see how very different the student culture was then from what is found today in haredi yeshivot, including the contemporary Yeshivat Chevron.

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM INTERVIEW WITH: DOROTHY LICHTENSTEIN (DL) NTERVIEWER: AGNES GUND (AG) LOCATION: NEW YORK, NEW YORK DATE: MAY 6, 1998 BEGIN MINICASSETTE MASTER TAPE 1, SIDE A AG: I'd like to thank you, first of all, for doing this. It's very nice of you. The first question that I'd like to ask you is, how did you and Roy meet, the first time? DL: The first time we met, I was working at a gallery, the Bianchini Gallery. That was around the corner from the Castelli Gallery at 4 East 77th Street. We were on 78th Street, and, in fact, that's the gallery that Rosa Esmond has now, Ubu Gallery [16 East 78th Street]. AG: Oh, is that her gallery? DL: Yes. We were doing a show called The Great American Supermarket, based on the fact that so much of the work in the early '60s imitated commercial products and ads, so we thought to set the exhibition up. AG: That's great. And this was a contemporary gallery? DL: Yes. When I started working there, Paul Bianchini owned it, and he did mostly drawing shows of modern masters, but, say, French and Europeans and mostly pre-war, but he would have had Dubuffet and Giacometti. AG: And he was a friend of Leo's [Castelli]. MoMA Archives Oral History: D. Lichtenstein page 1 of 29 DL: Well, he ran this gallery. He knew Leo, and of course it was very exciting. We thought Leo's gallery was the most exciting place.
