Once inside the complex, from either the Brindley Place or the Centenary Square entrance, please follow signs from the mall to rooms 11a & b. Press Release 04 December 2009 XC2009/041 (LW) CROSSCOUNTRY TOPS RAILWAY CHARTS It’s Gold and Silver for award-winning train operator CrossCountry has won two prestigious rail industry awards in recognition of its trains being one of the most improved and reliable fleets across Britain’s rail network. CrossCountry was awarded Gold and Silver at last week’s annual ‘Golden Spanner’ ceremony organised by industry magazine Modern Railways. The Golden Spanner went to the Class 221 Super Voyagers for taking first place in the ‘Modern DMU’ category as the most reliable fleet in its class. The Super Voyagers also took the Silver Spanner for being the most improved fleet thanks to reliability being up 118% on last year. The ‘Golden Spanner’ is an awards scheme aimed at promoting excellence in train maintenance within Britain. Sarah Kendall, Production Director at CrossCountry said: “We are extremely proud to win these nationally recognised awards. Since the start of our franchise in November 2007 the team at CrossCountry has worked very closely with Bombardier Transportation, our maintainer to take specific targeted steps to improve the reliability of our Voyager trains. Our focus now is to build on this significant progress and further improve our performance. Train reliability is vital for our customers and therefore of the highest priority for us.” All trains are ranked on the distance they cover between technical faults by the Association of Train Operating Companies’ (ATOC) National Fleet Reliability Improvement Programme. Using this league table (see below) CrossCountry’s Voyager trains outperformed all other intercity fleets across the country.

INVESTMENT, REPROCUREMENT AND FRANCHISE CONTRACT LENGTH IN THE BRITISH RAILWAY INDUSTRY* Luisa Affuso a and David Newbery Department of Applied Economics, University of Cambridge This Draft: May 2001 Abstract This paper studies the interaction between repeated auctions of rail franchises of different lengths, uncertainty, and incentives for investment in rolling stock, following the privatisation of British Rail. Theoretical predictions are tested empirically using a unique panel of data. Theory suggests that short franchise lengths reduce incentives to invest in specific assets. Our empirical results suggest that competition and strategic behaviour at the re-procurement stage can create incentives for delayed investment. Investing just before the end of the franchise enhances the incumbent’s probability of having the contract re-awarded and provides it with a first-mover advantage, while raising the entry cost for other potential bidders. Birmingham City Centre Tram Extension Opens to Passengers Ahead of Schedule
11th December 2019 Birmingham city centre tram extension opens to passengers ahead of schedule Two more Birmingham city centre tram stops have today been opened to passengers offering direct services to Christmas markets, attractions and shows. West Midlands Metro trams are from today picking up and dropping off passengers at the new Town Hall and Library stops following successful testing. A six minute peak time service will deliver passengers to the Library of Birmingham, Symphony Hall, ICC, Birmingham Rep, the Council House and Town Hall and offices in and around Centenary Square and Victoria Square. They can also use the tram to visit the German Christmas Market, big wheel and ice rink in the city centre. It is the first time in the UK that trams have used battery power to run along a modern line specifically built without overhead wires, preventing the need to attach cables to historic listed buildings such as Birmingham Town Hall and also reducing the line’s carbon footprint. Laura Shoaf, managing director of Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), which commissioned the extension, said: “This tram extension is open in time for Christmas, but will serve the West Midlands for years to come. We said it would be open by the end of 2019, and here it is ready to go with three weeks to spare. “We are offering people a convenient, fast and reliable service direct to some of Birmingham’s premier visitor attractions as well as the key office developments springing up around Centenary Square. “Our network is expanding rapidly with further extensions in development, and combined with our investment in rail, bus, roads and cycling, is transforming transport in the West Midlands.” Work on the first section of the Westside extension began in June 2017 and construction was carried out by the Midland Metro Alliance (MMA), a consortium set up by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) to build a series of tram extensions across the region.
