A WORD FROM THE PRODUCERS Michael Holzer Jacque Carnahan One year ago, we came together at the Gershwin Theatre for the very first Arts for Autism concert. Dozens of Broadway actors joined more than 150 young performers to take part in a show that inspired, educated and entertained us. It was uplifting to see so many passionate artists collaborate to raise awareness, encourage acceptance and to celebrate the power of the arts. We also witnessed the Broadway debut of Gina Hitsos, a young singer with autism who found her voice through the magic of music. There was an infectious feeling of love, excitement and optimism as everyone left the theatre that night. After a year of planning and projects we are back! We have many new and exciting developments since last June. After debuting a special arrangement of “Defying Gravity” in last year’s concert, we released a music video to share the beautiful message with an even wider audience. In February, we ventured out to the Ice Plant Recording studios in Queens with three former Broadway Elphabas from Wicked to reimagine the song we know and love. You can find the video on our website at ArtsForAutism.net. In May, we joined Autism Speaks at MetLife Stadium for the Northern New Jersey Walk. We were thrilled to be there and show our support. Jacque and our talented musicians serenaded and entertained the walkers; it was wonderful to see firsthand the positive impact that music can have. Now it’s June, and here we are again at the Gershwin Theatre.

For far too long, Black artists, theatre makers and technicians in all areas of our industry have been subjected to systemic and interpersonal racism that has harmed their lives and careers and diminished us all. 1 From March 2021 through August 2021, we, leaders in the Broadway theatre industry, participated in a summit organized by Black Theatre United. In five working groups consisting of theatre owners, producers, unions, and two groups of creatives (one with directors, choreographers, music directors, and designers; and another with casting directors, composers, and playwrights), we discussed how to reform our industry across issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging (EDIAB) with a focus on Black professionals.

Contact: Joe Guttridge, Director, Communications [email protected] 212.763.1279 Chuck Cooper, LaChanze, Norm Lewis, and more will star in Encores! production of Cabin in the Sky, directed by Ruben Santiago‐Hudson Creative teams also announced for Encores! productions of 1776 and Do I Hear a Waltz? New York, NY, December 7, 2015—Encores! Artistic Director Jack Viertel today announced the creative teams for New York City Center’s 2016 Encores! season. J. Bernard Calloway, Chuck Cooper, Marva Hicks, Carly Hughes, LaChanze, Norm Lewis, Forrest McClendon, and J.D. Webster will star in Vernon Duke and John Latouche’s jazz‐filled fable Cabin in the Sky, running for seven performances at City Center from February 10—14. The 1940 musical will be directed by Tony Award winner Ruben Santiago‐Hudson with choreography by Camille A. Brown. Originally produced in 1940, Cabin in the Sky followed Porgy and Bess in celebrating African‐American music and dance traditions. The musical tells the story of “Little Joe” Jackson, a charming ne’er‐do‐well who dies in a saloon brawl and is given six months on earth to prove his worth to the Lord’s General (Norm Lewis) and his long‐suffering wife Petunia (LaChanze), while resisting the temptations of the Devil’s Head Man (Chuck Cooper). Duke’s score, featuring the jazz hit “Taking a Chance on Love,” will be restored to its original glory for Encores!, thanks to the generous support of The Joseph S. and Diane H. Steinberg Broadway Musical Restoration Fund. The original orchestrations for Cabin in the Sky no longer exist and will be recreated by Tony Award winner Jonathan Tunick.
