Prompted by the ROM’s current presentation of Modernism on the Ganges: Raghubir Singh Photographs, and an allegation of sexual misconduct made against the deceased artist, #MeToo & the Arts seeks to encourage a larger conversation about how museums, and the public, are engaging with art within the context of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements that began in the film industry. Mansaram: COLLAGE! From 2014-2017, the ROM acquired over 700 works of art—paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, fabrics, film—from the archive of Panchal Mansaram (b. 1934), one of the few artists of the South Asian diaspora whose career in Canada stretches over 50 years. This video, produced by the ROM and directed by FSA Co-Chair Aruna Panday, is a glimpse into his life and work, which is a testament to the role of a diasporic artist in a global history of modernism. Extreme ophidiophobia made her hem and haw but he promised to look under beds and keep an eye out for cobras, so she agreed. Ethel had a wonder-filled time exploring India and Nepal for the first time with lovely travel companions, her husband and several ROM docents. Her camaraderie with the docents was such that Ethel was inspired to volunteer at the Museum. After retiring as a librarian, about 17 years ago, she joined the DMV, first helping to organize the ROM Bus daytrips and later with ROM Travel where she organized and led many trips to South Asia. She also trained as a docent giving tours of various galleries, including the Sir Christopher Ondaatje South Asian Gallery. For the last three years she’s held the volunteer position of Administrator for the South Asian Gallery where she is the liaison between Deepali Dewan, Dan Mishra Curator of South Asian Art and Culture, and docents. She meets with Dr. Dewan a couple times a year to learn about new objects on display and then incorporates that knowledge into information sheets and scripts. She also vets docents who give tours of the South Asia galley. Ethel herself gives a wonderful tour of the space, focusing on the concept of the image in South Asia. She ends each tour with ‘The Blue Lady’ aka ‘Kunti’ as she is Ethel Kellen pictured with Untitled by Navjot called in the Museum, properly titled Untitled (1999-2002), a teak wood Altaf, Mumbai, India. Metal, Indigo and acrylic sculpture by Navjot Altaf. With one hand ‘Kunti’ gathers information and with paint on teak wood. 1999. ROM 2007.31.1.1 the other gives knowledge, much like Ethel. – A.P. As one of the newest additions to the global art biennale circuit, its impact on the global contemporary art world has skyrocketed since it was founded in 2012. Rejecting the traditional biennale format, DAS re-examines how we think about art in both a regional and international context. Join us for this exclusive conversation with its co- founders Nadia and Rajeeb Samdani and discover how the Summit was conceptualized and realized, and what they imagine for its future. The Annual South Asia Lecture brings new voices and cultural innovators from the South Asian world to the GTA. It is generously supported by the Ancient Echoes Modern Voices South Asia Programming Fund.
