Linn on aga loodud ennekõike inimesele ning tema Linna vajadustele. EÜL is very grateful for the support of the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe, Estonian National Foundation of Civil Society (Kodanikuühiskonna Sihtkapital), Estonian Ministry of Education and Research, Tallinn University and Tartu Mill. Welcome! Dear Friends from the European student movement, I am most happy to welcome you on behalf of Federation of Estonian Student Unions (EÜL) to the 35th European Students’ Convention (ESC) in Tallinn. EÜL is hosting ESC for the very first time and we have chosen our medieval yet high tech capital as the intriguing venue. The ESC “Inclusive Student Movement” concentrates on the safety and well- being of international students in the society and their inclusion in the student movement. EÜL sees problems with the latter aspects both in Estonia and in Europe at large. Together with globalization the internationalisation of higher education in Europe has increased rapidly. Each year there are more and more students who continue their studies abroad. Unfortunately, different societies are not always welcoming of international people, causing the students to experience discrimination in different forms. Furthermore not all higher education institutions are prepared to offer the necessary support and information needed to make the integration of international students and the overcoming of cultural barriers smooth. In addition, there is also a lack of representation of international students on the local, national and international level in the student bodies. The prior description paints a quite gloomy picture. We see there’s a lot of room for improvement. And there always will be because its like Don Quixote and his fights with the windmills.

After years of studying, I can proudly say that I finished eve- rything and that I am graduated. My studying career was a quite a long one and not always that easy, but it has been a wonderful time where I have learned many things and developed myself. The pro- cess of the master thesis, from the beginning till the end, reflects these previous years perfectly. Alt- hough I am the one who will receive the degree, I could not have done this without the support and help of many during the years of studying in general and during the writing of this thesis in particular. Therefore I would like to thank the ones who helped and supported me. I want to start by thanking my colleagues at Estonian Holidays and especially Maila Saar, Lars Saar and Mari-Liis Makke.

  • Helmi Üprus and the Old Town of Tallinn
Lilian Hansar HELMI ÜPRUS AND THE OLD TOWN OF TALLINN The current paper focuses on the establishment of the protection zone in the old town of Tallinn. The leading researcher of the previous compre- hensive work in the 1950s and 1960s was Helmi Üprus1. The contribution of the prominent art historian in the international arena, as well as in the context of today’s local national heritage, has not received the recogni- tion it deserves. The role of Helmi Üprus, one of the most outstanding and versatile 20th century Estonian art historians, has been especially crucial in initiating several new research trends. One example is the complex study of the historical centre of Tallinn, which led to state pro- tection of the old town in 1966. Various authors have written on Üprus’s contribution to protecting the Tallinn old town,2 but the considerable volume of her research in urban construction requires a much more thorough introduction. The bibliography of her works compiled in 1991 contains a list of her sci- Translated by Tiina Randviir. 1 Helmi Üprus (1911–1978) studied at the University of Tartu (1930–1936), worked in the Estonian National Museum (1936–1947) and in the Art History Department of the Soviet Estonian Institute of History (1947–1950). From 1953 until her death, she was a researcher at the Restoration Workshop (later the State Restoration Board and State Design Institute of Cultural Monuments). She wrote papers on architecture, art and folk art and was one of the main authors of “Eesti arhitektuuri ajalugu” (1965) (Mart Eller, “Helmi Üprus kunstiteadlasena“, Vana Tallinn VI (X) (Tallinn: Estopol, 1996), 11–15).
