  • The Word “Legend”
True Legends are Gathering in Ballybofey… The word “Legend” is an often overused word in describing great sporting prowess or great GAA games and an official definition states “anyone or anything whose fame promises to be enduring”. The exploits of the youthful Clare Hurling team in winning the Liam McCarthy Cup on Saturday evening last, and in doing so beating a well fancied Cork side managed by the great Jimmy Barry Murphy, are already gaining legendary status. The fact that Cork only managed to lead both games for only 90 seconds is a testament to the Clare team but a word of warning….legends are not made in one sporting year !! The more mature readers will recall the fair haired Pat Spillane from the Templenoe Club in the Kingdom of Kerry, setting off on many a solo run from his own half back line and kicking score after score in All-Ireland Finals…I thought that he ran on the tips of his toes..!!!!…then again Legends can perform true feats of skill. True Legend…11 Munster Medals, 2 National Football Medals, 8 All-Ireland Medals and 9 All-Star Awards. Or Colm O Rourke gracefully weaving around flat-footed corner backs to score goals and points at ease, almost like a giant in slow motion. True Legend. 5 Leinster Medals, 3 National Football Legends, 2 All- Ireland Medals and 3 All-Star Awards. Peter Canavan struck fear into whole football teams when he got the ball within scoring distance and his deft touches when scoring goals would be the pride of any Premiership player on €150k a week.

We at home in Donegal are still flying the flag and wearing the jersey. Our senior footballers did us proud by winning the Ulster Championship and were only piped at the second last hurdle by the Dubs. You will probably find many more teams adopting Donegal’s style of play next time around (no matter what the press or Pat Spillane says) To Jim McGuinness and all involved we say a big thank you and well done. At county level, we had a battle royal in the club championship between Glenswilly and St. Michaels, and we wish Glenswilly all the best in the Ulster Championship. Donegal, hopefully, will be represented at the 2012 Olympics in London by Brendan Boyce from Cratlagh just outside Milford. Brendan has achieved the Qualifying A time for the 50 km. walk and we wish him well in his build up. If any of you have ever been involved in athletics, I am sure you heard of Cranford Athletic Club. Would you believe they are celebrating fifty years in existence this year? Yes the big 50 and one of their founding members Eamon Giles is still at the helm. Some achievement! Cranford Athletic Club celebrates their golden jubilee with a gala dinner in the Milford Inn Hotel on the 28thOctober.

Ta súil agam go mbainfidh achán duine sult agus taithneamh as an ocáid agus go mbeidh cluiche maith iomána le feiceál anseo i bPáirc Sheáin Mhic Cumhaill inniú. On behalf of CLG Dún na nGall I would like to welcome all the Monaghan team, backroom and travelling County Officers to Pairc Séan Mhic Cumhaill this evening. I also welcome our match officials and the TV crews from Eirsport and RTE who will bring the game into your homes this evening. We are all delighted to get the opportunity to get out on our pitches again after such a lengthy lockdown. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought many different challenges to our Association and the non-attendance of our supporters is very frustrating for all involved. I express gratitude to our National Competition Control Committee who have worked professionally with the GAA Covid Committee in getting fixtures up and running. The county of Donegal were asked to take a more serious attitude to Covid regulations a few weeks ago, and the GAA in the County once again led by example in re-emphasising the importance of adhering to the Covid prevention regulations.

  • Secretary's Report to Convention
Tuarascail Bhliantúil 2012 A Chairde, The basis of any success is deemed by strategically planned, structurally provided for and systemically operated. These may be vital aspects of progress but it is hard to beat teamwork and above all determination. Given the ongoing work of our Association, its Clubs, Counties and above all our members then we can fathom the outstanding community work that the GAA does at a local level for the greater good. Some years ago we talked about inné, inniu agus amárach and this symbolised the Association, its historic investment in Ireland, its games, language and culture and the rationale for how we have evolved. We operate today and plan for the future. We are aimed at being for the whole family for the whole life. This is challenging but we are about the central aspects for our reason for being who we are and what motivates us to achieve extraordinary things on behalf of our Club, our County, our Province and our Association. It is to this end that we dedicate our time, energy and resources and if we set out to adopt, imitate or improve any part of our work it is with motivation and determination that we hope to achieve our objectives. Emigration is a major problem for many of our Clubs at the present time but we are exporting high quality personnel and while they may be lost at home we should encourage their continued involvement with the Association in their new land. The Association has expanded abroad and the core values of our games, language and culture are vibrant in many parts of the world as the consequence of our young people travelling abroad and bring their community concept and identity with them.
