I thank you all for your attendance and your valued participation. I express my sincere gratitude to you all for your dedication and commitment in promoting our games in your communities. Aogán Ó Fearghail I extend a very special welcome to Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Aogán Ó Fearghail and I thank him for taking the time out of his extremely busy schedule to be present with us tonight. As you approach the final months of an excellent presidency you can look back with satisfaction and pride on your many achievements. You have overseen the affairs of our association with fairness, openness and transparency. The restructuring of the All Ireland Football and Hurling championship will bring freshness to both competitions and also increase the number of weekends available for our club competitions. Your willingness to visit clubs throughout the country and give recognition to the contribution that our GAA volunteers are making in local communities is proof of your love of the GAA at grass roots level. You have also been an excellent ambassador for our association abroad and you have instilled new energy and enthusiasm into our exiles that will guarantee the further growth of our ever-expanding association worldwide. I wish you well for the remainder of your presidency and all the gaels of Cavan are all extremely proud of your achievements. County Teams Our Minor team had a very strong year and after being defeated in the Ulster Final by Derry they had an excellent victory in the All Ireland Quarter final against Galway resulting in the first appearance of a Cavan Minor team in an All-Ireland semi-final since 1974. They put up a gallant performance but were defeated by a very strong Kerry team. Under 17 The Under 17 team also reached the Ulster Final but fell to a very strong Tyrone team. I am confident that a number of the players on both panels will go on to wear the county jersey with distinction at U 20 and senior level in the future. Congratulations to Oisin Pierson on his Minor All Star award. I thank John Brady and his management team for all their work during 2017 and I wish them good luck in 2018. Under 21 The Under 21 team had a disappointing campaign and they were defeated in the first round of the Ulster championship by Donegal. Niall Lynch decided to step down from his position as manager and I thank Niall and his management team for their contribution to Cavan GAA during their management term. I wish our incoming U 20 manager Kevin Downs and his backroom team every success in 2018. Senior Team Our Senior team had a mixed year, playing in division one of the Allianz National League was always going to be challenging, there were a number of very good performances and even though they were relegated we had high hopes of a good run in the Ulster championship. Unfortunately, once again we fell at the first hurdle to Monaghan and it was the back-door route once again for Cavan. After defeating Offaly, we faced Tipperary in Kingspan Breffni and produced an excellent first half display only to fall away in the second half and suffer a very hard to accept defeat. Competition in division two will be intense next year but I feel the players have the talent to make a swift return to division one. Our championship performance in recent years has been disappointing and I feel it is vital that the current panel of players fulfil their potential and deliver an Ulster title in the near future. I wish Mattie McGleenan and his backroom team good luck in 2018. Unfortunately, due to a road accident we had the sad and untimely passing of Dominic Early. Dominic was a member of our senior management team and his passion and commitment to his role was infectious. He left a lasting impression on everybody who had the pleasure of meeting him. I extend our sympathy to his family on their sad loss. Ar dheis go raibh a anam. Hurling Our Senior hurling team competed in the Lory Meagher cup and acquitted themselves very well. I thank Sean Farrell, Eamon Dalton, Peadar Neary and Seamus Hughes for their work on the hurling steering committee and their support in getting a senior hurling team re- established. We are entering into the National hurling league in 2018 and training has commenced with a very good response from players. I welcome our new hurling manager Michael Carr and I wish him and his backroom team good luck in 2018. I thank Dinny Cahill and his backroom team for their contribution during 2017. I have great concern regarding the number of underage teams competing at club level. I ask the hurling steering committee to develop an action plan to increase the number of underage teams in the county. My concern is that unless we get these numbers increased, we will once again be debating the viability of fielding an intercounty senior team in the years ahead due to a lack of quality senior players. I congratulate Darren Sheridan and Matthew Hynes on winning Lory Meagher All Star awards. Coaching and Games It has been another very busy year for our Coaching Officer Jody Clark, GDM Dermot McCabe and our full-time coaches. Jody and Dermot have carried out a detailed review of our coaching structures and after outlining a comprehensive proposal for the future direction of coaching it was agreed by our management committee that we needed to increase the number of coaches at our disposal. Following on from Sean Doherty’s resignation in late 2016 and Finbar Reilly recently taking up new work opportunities elsewhere it was agreed that we hire four new coached to commence work in January 2018 giving us a net increase of two coaches.
