Journal of Social Welfare and Management49 Volume 5 Number 1, Jan - Mar 2013 Violence in Hindi Movies: A Comparative Study of Two Movies Sonalee Nargunde*, Iliyas Ahmad** Abstract Cinema in India has developed to a large extent and movies are its significant tool. Movies not only provide entertainment to the large audiences but also play some additional roles. The message provided by this medium is more impactful than any other medium because of its reach and easy accessibility. The content provided by the Indian films plays an important role in shaping up its audience. After, reviewing some of the movies, the researcher found a consistent theme of violence in almost all the films and found it important to share it with larger audience. Indian film industry produces more than 800 films annually and almost story line of all the movies is weaved around love, revenge, mafia wars and all this is supported by heavy dose of violence. Critics say that the Indian cinema nowadays is churning out films with persistent theme of violence because of the transplantation of the western ideas resulting in the portrayal of extreme vulgarity on big screen. Film makers follow the steps of Hollywood where most of the movies are much more violent than the bollywood. Movies released in the last few years have seen a continuous increase in the portrayal of violence both in content and subject wise. Keywords: Film violence; Bollywood; Movies. • Stealing the Thunder
Stealing the thunder THUMS UP Born:1977 History:Launched in India by Parle Agro Pvt. Ltd. Now owned by Coca-Cola India Status:Market share is a much disputed subject in the cola industry—yet some insiders, who claim to be in the know, say that Thums Up accounted for 50 million of the 550 million cases sold in the carbonated drinks segment in 2007, and the brand is the largest selling cola in India, with a share larger than that of Coca-Cola and Pepsi Brand story: Thums Up was launched by Parle Agro Pvt. Ltd to fill the void left by the government ban on American soft drinks giant Coca-Cola in the 1970s. The thumbs-up logo was adopted early on, but the brand was positioned differently then. “Thums Up was earlier positioned as a refreshing cola, with slogans such as Thums Up Makes it Great and Happy Days are here Again. It was post-1996 that the brand moved towards a more individualistic, masculine positioning,” says Kashmira Chadha, director of marketing at Coca-Cola. Things changed post liberalization, when Thums Up faced stiff competition from Pepsi and Coke. After a tough fight, the Chauhan brothers, owners of Parle Agro, finally sold Thums Up to Coca-Cola. Though Thums Up enjoyed a market share of around 30% at the time, Coca-Cola focused all its energy on promoting the Coke brand. “Any outsider will not be able to fathom the equity that the brand Thums Up enjoys among its target group. Coca-Cola did not understand it either.

  • Dance-Off Or a Battle for the Future: Dance Reality Shows in India
CHAPTER 14 DANCE-OFF, OR A BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE Dance Reality Shows in India PALLABI CHAKRAVORTY Hindu mythology tells us that a most reasonable method of settling an argument is a dance-off. The story involves two of the most powerful Hindu deities, Shiva and Kali (who are husband and wife). Once they clashed over territorial dominance of the Thillai forest in the southern part of India. Kali was the patron goddess of the forest and the temple within it. But Shiva, following his two devotees who wanted to worship him in the temple (in the form of his abstract representation called the Shiva lingam), came to dance in the forest. This basically meant that Shiva wanted to occupy the forest and oust Kali. Kali refused to leave and challenged Shiva to enter a dance competition with her on the condition that the loser would leave the forest. Lord Vishnu presided as the judge. Kali (the goddess of Shakti, or power, who is often shown naked in Hindu iconog raphy, standing on the chest of her consort Shiva, prostrated beneath her) danced fear lessly. She matched Shiva’s every move and every posture with ease and grace. Shiva, the cosmic dancer of the universe, danced his tandava nritya (the cyclic dance of cre ative destruction) with fierce intensity. They were unrelenting. They danced for days and nights, but no one won. Then Shiva performed a transgressive act. He cheated. He lifted one of his legs high above his head in what classical dance parlance calls ananda tandavam (the dance of bliss).
