    Clonmel Advertiser. 20-4-1822 We regret having to mention a cruel and barbarous murder, attended with circumstances of great audacity, that has taken place on the borders of Tipperary and Kilkenny. A farmer of the name of Morris, at Killemry, near Nine-Mile-House, having become obnoxious to the public disturbers, received a threatening notice some short time back, he having lately come to reside there. On Wednesday night last a cow of his was driven into the bog, where she perished; on Thursday morning he sent two servants, a male and female, to the bog, the male servant to skin the cow and the female to assist him; but while the woman went for a pail of water, three ruffians came, and each of them discharged their arms at him, and lodged several balls and slugs in his body, and then went off. This occurred about midday. No one dared to interfere, either for the prevention of this crime, or to follow in pursuit of the murderers. The sufferer was quite a youth, and had committed no offence, even against the banditti, but that of doing his master’s business. Clonmel Advertiser 24-8-1835 Last Saturday, being the fair day at Carrick-on-Suir, and also a holiday in the Roman Catholic Church, an immense assemblage of the peasantry poured into the town at an early hour from all directions of the surrounding country. The show of cattle was was by no means inferior-but the only disposable commodity , for which a brisk demand appeared evidently conspicuous, was for Feehans brown stout.

He is buried in Loughmore Cemetery.”Kathleen Fanning C. 1786, Walter Skehan (a), of Coolbawn married firstly Mary O’Dea (w-a). Issue:- 3 Children:- (1). John (aa), born 1787 = Mary Ryan? 1824. Said to have been implicated in a faction fight in which a man was murdered: given Coolbawn to his step-brother, Darby, and fled to U.S.A. He is believed to have been married and that his eldest child was named Walter. John Skehan (aa) was baptised on 3rd May 1787. But it must be noted that there is a John Skehan who died 18th May, 1804, aged 77, and is buried at St. Johnstown with other members of the family: but he however would be too old to be same person as above John, and is perhaps the father of Walter (a).     Provincial Junior Football Shield Final HERTFORDSHIRE v YORKSHIRE Frongoch, An Bhreatain Bheag Dé Sathairn, Meitheamh 18, 2016 Throw-in 4.00pm Luach £3.00 GAELIC FOOTBALL RETURNS TO FRONGOCH Winners of today’s final of An Bhreatain’s provincial shield competition will be presented with the Wolfe Tone Cup, a specially commissioned trophy to commemorate the ‘Wolfe Tone Final’. This game commemorates the fact that Gaelic football matches were organised and played by Irish internees in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising. While held in the Frongoch internment camp, the internees organised inter-hut and inter-county competitions which were all played on a football field the internees named Croke Park. It is hard to separate the GAA story and that of the island of Ireland and if anything exemplifies that, it’s the central role our games played here on what was a former military detention centre.

Led by Sean Barlow and the late Sean Lyons the United Sports Panel was formed. They felt the time was right to have an Award Scheme in the county to honour amateur sports stars in their chosen sports annually. In fact, one should note that these were the first such awards in the country. As well as honouring Tipperary’s outstanding amateur sportspersons the United Sports Panel had another aim, as expressed by the second chairman, the late Tom Halpin, when he presented the awards in 1964. He expressed the hope ‘that functions such as these, which brought the stars of various sports together, would help to promote unity in sport.’ Like all innovations, it was not without its teething problems. Finding ways to finance it and getting venues were just two of them. In the early days businesses in Clonmel were canvassed to sponsor the trophies. This problem was eliminated for the 1964 awards when Messrs Showerings Ltd.

    ‘High Prestige’ The Story of Clare’s All Ireland Hurling Champions of 1914 Dr. Tomás Mac Conmara Produced as part of the ‘Champions Once More’ exhibition at Clare Museum 15 October 1914 ‘No Gael can afford to miss this game. In all likelihood it will mark a new departure for Irish hurling and should prove sensational in the extreme. A good hour of thrills is assured, sixty minutes of exhilarating hurling. Hurling is easily the most spectacular of games but such hurling as can be played by Clare and Leix will be a sight for the Gods. With special excursions at cheap rates from all parts of the country, he would be unwise who is found at home when the ball is thrown in for one of the greatest encounters ever staged’.1 22 October 1914 ‘Hurling champions of Ireland! Such is Clare’s proud boast after the final match which was played in Croke Memorial Park, Dublin in the presence of at least 15,000 spectators last Sunday. While it cannot be truthfully said that it was a first class match, still there were plenty of thrills and at every part of the contest, the boys from Clare mastered their doughty opponents from the Queen’s county and the score eloquently speaks for the superiority in the victors.
