The potential seed crop was estimated to decrease by 84 % of the ini- tial value. Mortality was mainly caused by abiotic factors during the first year of cone development while cone insects caused most damage to second-year cones. The cone entomofauna only included three phytophagous species, and largely differed from the fauna observed in cones of other Alpine conifers. Pinus cembra / regeneration / cone insect / seed loss Résumé — Les dégats d’insectes des cônes et autres facteurs de mortalité limitant les poten- tialités de régénération naturelle du pin cembro dans les Alpes françaises du Nord. Un suivi démo- graphique de cônes de pin cembro sur un cycle reproductif complet a été réalisé en 1992 et 1993. Au total, 84 % de la production potentielle de graines a été détruite. La majorité des pertes a été causée par des facteurs abiotiques la première année, et par des insectes pour les cônes de deuxième année. L’entomofaune ne comprend que trois espèces phytophages et diffère largement de celle observée dans les autres essences des conifères alpins. -

ABSTRACT Fringillidae finches form a subfamily of songbirds (Passeriformes), which are presently distributed around the world. This subfamily includes canaries, goldfinches, greenfinches, rosefinches, and grosbeaks, among others. Molecular phylogenies obtained with mitochondrial DNA sequences show that these groups of finches are put together, but with some polytomies that have apparently evolved or radiated in parallel. The time of appearance on Earth of all studied groups is suggested to start after Middle Miocene Epoch, around 10 million years ago. Greenfinches (genus Carduelis) may have originated at Eurasian desert margins coming from Rhodopechys obsoleta (dessert finch) or an extinct pale plumage ancestor; it later acquired green plumage suitable for the greenfinch ecological niche, i.e.: woods. Multicolored Eurasian goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) has a genetic extant ancestor, the green-feathered Carduelis citrinella (citril finch); this was thought to be a canary on phonotypical bases, but it is now included within goldfinches by our molecular genetics phylograms. Speciation events between citril finch and Eurasian goldfinch are related with the Mediterranean Messinian salinity crisis (5 million years ago). Linurgus olivaceus (oriole finch) is presently thriving in Equatorial Africa and was included in a separate genus (Linurgus) by itself on phenotypical bases. Our phylograms demonstrate that it is and old canary. Proposed genus Acanthis does not exist. Twite and linnet form a separate radiation from redpolls. -

Een Kleine Vallei Met Een Groots Verhaal
Een kleine vallei met een groots verhaal. Valle d’Aosta is de kleinste regio van Italië. Ze is omringd door de hoogste toppen van Europa en bestaat uit het centrale dal van de Dora Baltea, van- waar 13 kleinere zijdalen lopen die worden doorkruist door gletsjers en stro- men. Sinds de oudheid is het een belangrijk kruispunt van de westelijke Alpen. Op dit moment is het verbonden met Frankrijk via de Mont Blanc-tunnel en de Kleine Sint-Bernhardpas en met Zwitserland via de Grote Sint-Bernhardpas en -tunnel. De vallei was al in de prehistorie bewoond en werd bezet door de Salassi, een Gallo-Keltische bevolkingsgroep die na een lange strijd werd verdreven door de Romeinen in de 1ste eeuw v.Chr. De Romeinen vestigden zich in de regio en stichtten de stad Augusta Praetoria in 25 v.Chr. De vallei kwam later in handen van de Bourgondiërs, de Longobarden en de Karolin- gers tot ze de eigendom werd van het vorstenhuis Savoye. In 1191 verleende Thomas I van Savoye de “Carta delle Franchigie”, die het politieke en admi- nistratieve zelfbestuur erkende en van kracht bleef tot 1770. De vallei kende een vorm van autonomie met eigen wetten en werd bestuurd door de Staten Generaal, en vanaf 1536 door het Conseil des Commis, een soort bestuursraad die uit 24 leden bestond. Napoleon trok tijdens zijn campagne in Italië door de regio in 1800 en bracht de idealen van de revolutie met zich mee. Dit wekte sympathie en haat, bewondering en angst op en vormde de aanleiding voor legendes en verhalen die vandaag de dag nog steeds in de vallei worden verteld. -

(And also the centipede.) iii GENERAL ABSTRACT High latitude resident bird species provide an unique opportunity to investigate patterns of postglacial and barrier-mediated dispersal. In this study, multiple genetic markers were used to understand postglacial colonization by and contemporary barriers to gene flow in three corvids. Clark’s nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana), Eurasian nutcracker (N. caryocatactes), and gray jay (Perisoreus canadensis) are year-round resident northern hemisphere passerines with ranges encompassing previously glaciated and unglaciated regions and potential barriers to dispersal (e.g. -

Removal of Citril Finch from the British & Irish List Alan Knox, on behalf of the British Ornithologists' Union Records Committee n 29th January 1904, J. Quinton, a local birdcatcher, caught a small Ofinch on the Denes at Caistor (now Caister), just north of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, The bird, subsequently identified as a Citril Finch Serinus citrinelk, was kept alive for a few days. It was then prepared as a mounted specimen by T. E. Gunn of Norwich, one of the best-known taxidermists of the period. E. C. Saunders, who was in possession of the bird for a short time, told the ornithologist J. H. Gurney about it (Gurney 1905). Gurney saw the specimen himself and was 'responsible for its identification'. This could mean that it was he who identified it or, more likely, that he confirmed the identification to his own satisfaction. Gurney noted that the bird had been 'an adult female in good feather'. Shortly after stuffing, die specimen passed to the collection of Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe and, on the dispersal of that collec tion, the bird was purchased and presented to the Booth Museum in Brighton, where it remains (plate 123; case no. 460, reg. no. 208113; Boodi & Griffith 1927). The species was admitted to the British List by Howard Saunders on the basis of Gurney's claim (Saunders 1907). No published description, photograph or biometrics of the bird have been located, nor is there any record of the specimen having been examined criti cally since Gurney's time. Citril Finch remained on the British & Irish List (in category B) on the basis of the Great Yarmouth specimen alone. -
