2 This user guide will provide step-by-step guide for synchronizing ipod on Fedora 10. It covers how to install gtkpod (a for Apple's iPod), upload media stuff such as music, videos and pictures to iPod, download them from iPod and delete them from iPod.

Chapter 1: gtkpod gtkpod is a platform independent Graphical User Interface for Apple's iPod. There is no Linux version of iTunes released from Apple. Therefore, application such as gtkpod is used to manage media contents from ipod and built-in media players such as , music player. It supports the first to fifth Generation including the iPod mini, iPod Photo, iPod Shuffle, iPod nano, and iPod Video.

Chapter 2: Installing gtkpod gtkpod can be installed in 2 different ways.

2.1 Installing gtkpod using command line gtkpod can be simply installed using following command in terminal.

$su $yum install gtkpod

On the other hand, it can also be installed by downloading from gtkpod website or using fedora add/remove software.

2.2 Installing using Fedora add/remove software

1. Go to System>Administration>Add/remove software. 2. An Add/remove software window will be opened up. 3. Search for “gtkpod” in the search field provided. 4. Once the gtkpod application is found, select it and click apply. The application will be installed automatically.

2.3 Uninstalling gtkpod gtkpod can be uninstalled by using following commands in termianal.

$su $yum erase gtkpod

The iPod should be mounted automatically, and you should find an iPod icon on your desktop. Launch gtkpod. Click on Load iPod button. It should appear on the left column.

If it does not, it may be because the default mount point for iPod in gtkpod is different from your iPod's mount point. There are 2 ways to verify this.

Terminal [Applications --> System Tools --> Terminal] : type df. My iPod's mount point is /media/&##

In gtkpod, go to iPod options/create new repository. Edit your iPod mountpoint if it is different. You may also choose to enter the model of your iPod. Click Add.

4 Your iPod should appear in the left column.

4.1 Upload Music To The iPod

To download music from the iPod to your local hard drive, right-click the appropriate artist/album/song and select Copy Tracks to Filesystem:

A new window opens where you can specify the location where you want to save the songs on your hard drive.

4.3 Delete Music On The iPod

To delete music on the iPod, right-click on the appropriate artist/album/song and select Delete From iPod:

To create a new playlist, click on the New Playlist button:

9 You have the choice of Empty Playlist or Smart Playlist.

Empty playlist:

Empty playlist is the typical brand new playlist. Select this if you don't want to customise your playlist.

Enter a name for the new playlist.

Smart playlist:

This may be new for iTunes users. Smart playlist allows you to categorise songs into a playlist based on several criteria such as date added, words in artists' names, etc.

For an ipod that has photo storage, there will be a photo icon on the playlist on the left of the screen. click on the photo icon to manage your photos. photos that are already in your ipod will appear.

to add a photo, click on the small 'photo' tab and then click on 'add image'. a new window will appear where you can browse and select the image u want.

12 13 to create a new album, click on 'album' followed by 'add' and a window will ask you to name the new album.

transferring of a pic from one album to another is as simple as drag and drop. to delete an image from the album, simply select the picture, and choose 'remove image' under 'photo'. however removing an image from an album does not remove it from the photo library hence to remove it from the whole ipod you will have to remove it from the photo library.
