  • Asolo Rep Continues Its 60Th Season with NOISES OFF Directed By
NOISES OFF Page 1 of 7 **FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE** February 25, 2019 Asolo Rep Continues its 60th Season with NOISES OFF Directed by Comedic Broadway Veteran Don Stephenson March 20 - April 20 (SARASOTA, February 25, 2019) — Asolo Rep continues its celebration of 60 years on stage with Tony Award®-winner Michael Frayn's rip-roaringly hilarious play NOISES OFF, one of the most celebrated farces of all time. Directed by comedic Broadway veteran Don Stephenson, NOISES OFF previews March 20 and 21, opens March 22 and runs through April 20 in rotating repertory in the Mertz Theatre, located in the FSU Center for the Performing Arts. A comedy of epic proportions, NOISES OFF has been the laugh-until-you-cry guilty pleasure of audiences for decades. With opening night just hours away, a motley company of actors stumbles through a frantic, final rehearsal of the British sex farce Nothing On, and things could not be going worse. Lines are forgotten, love triangles are unraveling, sardines are flying everywhere, and complete pandemonium ensues. Will the cast pull their act together on stage even if they can't behind the scenes? “With Don Stephenson, an extraordinary comedic actor and director at the helm, this production of NOISES OFF is bound to be one of the funniest theatrical experiences we have ever presented,” said Asolo Rep Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards. “I urge the Sarasota community to take a break and escape to NOISES OFF, a joyous celebration of the magic of live theatre.” Don Stephenson's directing work includes Titanic (Lincoln Center, MUNY), Broadway Classics (Carnegie Hall),Of Mice and Manhattan (Kennedy Center), A Comedy of Tenors (Paper Mill Playhouse) and more.

  • ARNOLD MITTELMAN Producer/Director 799 Crandon
ARNOLD MITTELMAN Producer/Director 799 Crandon Boulevard, #505 Key Biscayne, FL 33149 [email protected] ARNOLD MITTELMAN is a producer and director with 40 years of theatrical achievement that has resulted in the creation and production of more than 300 artistically diverse plays, musicals and special events. Prior to coming to the world famous Coconut Grove Playhouse in 1985, Mr. Mittelman directed and produced Alone Together at Broadway's Music Box Theatre. Succeeding the esteemed actor José Ferrer as the Producing Artistic Director of Coconut Grove Playhouse, he continued to bring national and international focus to this renowned theater. Mr. Mittelman helped create more than 200 plays, musicals, educational and special events on two stages during his 21-year tenure at the Playhouse. These plays and musicals were highlighted by 28 World or American premieres. This body of work includes three Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights directing their own work for the first time in a major theatrical production: Edward Albee - Seascape; David Auburn - Proof; and Nilo Cruz - Anna In the Tropics. Musical legends Cy Coleman, Charles Strouse, Jerry Herman, Jimmy Buffett, John Kander and Fred Ebb were in residence at the Playhouse to develop world premiere productions. The Coconut Grove Playhouse has also been honored by the participation of librettist/writers Herman Wouk, Alfred Uhry, Jerome Weidman and Terrence McNally. Too numerous to mention are the world famous stars and Tony award-winning directors, designers and choreographers who have worked with Mr. Mittelman. Forty Playhouse productions, featuring some of the industry's greatest theatrical talents and innovative partnerships between the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors, have transferred directly to Broadway, off-Broadway, toured, or gone on to other national and international venues (see below).

  • Knut Hamsun at the Movies in Transnational Contexts
KNUT HAMSUN AT THE MOVIES IN TRANSNATIONAL CONTEXTS Arne Lunde This article is a historical overview that examines how the literary works of Knut Hamsun have been adapted into films over the past century. This “Cook’s Tour” of Hamsun at the movies will trace how different national and transnational cinemas have appropri- ated his novels at different historical moments. This is by no means a complete and exhaustive overview. The present study does not cite, for example, Hamsun films made for television or non-feature length Hamsun films. Thus I apologize in advance for any favorite Hamsun-related films that may have been overlooked. But ideally the article will address most of the high points in the international Hamsun filmography. On the subject of the cinema, Hamsun is famously quoted as having said in the 1920s: “I don’t understand film and I’m at home in bed with the flu” (Rottem 2). Yet while Hamsun was volun- tarily undergoing psychoanalysis in Oslo in 1926, he writes to his wife Marie about wishing to learn to dance and about going to the movies more (Næss 129). Biographer Robert Ferguson reports that in 1926, Hamsun began regularly visiting the cinemas in Oslo “taking great delight in the experience, particularly enjoying adventure films and comedies” (Ferguson 286). So we have the classic Hamsun paradox of conflicting statements on a subject, in this case the movies. Meanwhile, it is also important to remember that the films that Hamsun saw in 1926 would still have been silent movies with intertitles and musical accompaniment, and thus his poor hearing would not have been an impediment to his enjoyment.

  • Terrorism in Southeast Asia
Order Code RL31672 CRS Report for Congress Received through the CRS Web Terrorism in Southeast Asia Updated November 18, 2003 Mark Manyin Coordinator Richard Cronin, Larry Niksch, Bruce Vaughn Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division Congressional Research Service ˜ The Library of Congress Terrorism in Southeast Asia Summary Following the defeat of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, U.S. attention turned to radical Islamist groups in Southeast Asia, particularly those in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore that are known or alleged to have ties to the Al Qaeda terrorist network. For more than a decade, Al Qaeda has penetrated the region by establishing local cells, training Southeast Asians in its camps in Afghanistan, and by financing and cooperating with indigenous radical Islamist groups. Indonesia and the southern Philippines have been particularly vulnerable to penetration by anti- American Islamic terrorist groups. Members of one indigenous Al Qaeda affiliate, Jemaah Islamiyah, is known to have assisted two of Al Qaeda’s September 11, 2001 hijackers and have confessed to plotting and carrying out attacks against Western targets, including the October 12, 2002 bombing in Bali, Indonesia that killed approximately 200 people, mostly Western tourists. The Bali attack signalled a shift in Jemaah Islamiyah’s tactics, from targeting Western military and government installations to focusing on “softer” targets such as tourist resorts, Western business, and schools serving Westerners. The August 2003 bombing of the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, thought to be carried out by Jemaah Islamiyah, appears to fit this pattern. Arrests in Thailand and Cambodia in the spring and summer of 2003 may indicate that the network has established and/or stepped up operations in those countries, as well as Laos and Burma.
