I would be delighted to have you join us for a day sail during your visit. Please let me know what days are options for them as we have a 6 person minimum but we have had some other interest this week so I might be able to put something together! What to Expect Our day sails depart at 9:30a and return around 4:30p. During the day, we sail to multiple idyllic destinations to snorkel and swim in the clearest water in the Caribbean. (Snorkel gear is provided.) Our sailing catamaran offers great sailing, lots of deck space for relaxing, easy on/off swimming ladder, 2 bathrooms, and a huge shaded cockpit that allows everyone on the boat to be in the shade. We will keep you well refreshed with unlimited cold drinks and an extensive buffet lunch, freshly prepared and served on board. We have several different itineraries to choose from… Norman Island & The Indians - Our Norman Island & The Indians trip includes The Caves, The Bight, and finishes at The Indians… one of the best snorkel sites in the BVI. This itinerary offers the most snorkeling, the smoothest sailing, the calmest anchorages and, therefore, is also great for kids. Cooper Island & Peter Island - Our Cooper Island and Peter Island trip includes snorkeling an excellent reef at Cooper Island, snorkeling with sea turtles in beautiful Deadman's Bay at Peter Island, followed by either Great Harbor… with a possible stop at the Willy-T (floating bar)... or Little Harbor, both also at Peter Island. Jost Van Dyke - Our Jost Van Dyke trip includes Sandy Spit, Diamond Cay and finishes at White Bay… home of the famous Soggy Dollar Bar. Please visit our website below to learn more about them.     HOPE’S RECOMMENDED BVI & USVI ANCHORAGES First of All…..when you get off the plane….. stop, close your eyes, take a very deep breath in and as you breathe out, remove the “real world” from your mind as fast as possible and for the rest of your vacation! Concentrate on soaking in the beauty around you and settle into the island lifestyle. No one else is in a hurry there, so you may as well get into the same groove as quickly as possible. Note # 2: This itinerary starts and ends in Soper’s Hole, West End, Tortola, BVI, but you can pick it up anywhere and go from there or go the other direction (clockwise) if preferred. Keep in mind that the prevailing winds are from the East; just North of East in Winter months, and just South of East in summer. In the winter months swells can come in from the North from systems happening up north which can make some (northern facing) beaches and anchorages rolly or unwieldy (Cane Garden Bay, the Baths, etc) so always have a plan B when setting up a float plan! DAY ONE If you want to visit St. John this would be a good time. Nice downwind sail to one of the beautiful beaches, Leinster, Maho, Francis Bay etc. (Check in required at Cruz Bay) Alternatively sail on a nice beam reach to either Norman Island or Peter Island and sail counter-clockwise around Tortola. Pick up a mooring at the Indians, Pelican Island, off Norman Island (there are only about 5 moorings there so you may have to go to the caves or the Bight and come back later if full) Absolutely wonderful snorkeling here above and around this fascinating rock outcropping.

Our in­ tention was to sufficiently assess this record to provide a few clear guidelines about the management process that has informed the building and continuous re-building of this enhanced insular ecosystem-or wilderness area, as the owner has referred to it. The successful strategy for managing Sandy Cay as a privately owned park that is open to the public is worthy of more than emulation. We strongly recommend as an interim measure continuation of the basic operational framework and extant maintenance strategies that have worked so well in the past. We specifically recommend assignment to the Sandy Cay project of at least two part-time gardeners, as well as continued con­ sultation with the island's longstanding professional horticulturist and continued em­ ployment of the caretaker from Jost Van Dyke. These persons should be retained through the initial transitional period not only for convenience but also for three addi­ tional purposes: 1. Background The Action Research and Learning Group is a key element of Building civil society capacity for conservation in the Caribbean United Kingdom Overseas Territories (UKOTs), a three-year (2009- 2011) research and capacity building project, coordinated by the Commonwealth Foundation (the Foundation) and implemented regionally by the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) under funding from the Darwin Initiative (Darwin). A full concept note for the project is attached at Appendix 1. The meeting was originally scheduled for 7-11 September 2009 in Montserrat, with a focus on capacity building for participatory planning. However, several of the organisations were unable to send two participants and/or were unable to identify local partner organisations. It was therefore decided, in conjunction with the Commonwealth Foundation and Defra that 2-day national visits should be made to each participating UKOT as a precursor to the first ARLG meeting, with a view to: • enhancing CANARI’s understanding of the institutional framework for biodiversity conservation in each participating UKOT; • validating existing capacities and capacity gaps within the National Trust in each UKOT; • identifying potential partner organisations; and • engaging both Board and staff of the National Trusts and their partners to secure greater buy-in to the project objectives. In the light of the findings of the national visits, it was decided that the focus of the first meeting should be on strategic aspects of organisational development (see Section 2 below for more detail) rather than participatory planning.

    14-Day BVI Suggested Sailing Itinerary Day 1 A short reach across the Sir Francis Drake Channel arrive at The Bight, Norman Island, rumoured to be the site of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novel, “Treasure Island”. There’s time for a swim or snorkel at the Indians before watching a spectacular Caribbean sunset while enjoying a sundowner. Visit the Pirates Bight ashore for a fabulous dinner or just cocktails before dinner aboard your yacht. Day 2 After breakfast, take your dinghy over (or the yacht) to The Caves. Pick up a National Park buoy and enjoy the wonders of the coral reef and its colourful inhabitants (don’t forget to look for treasure!). Sail to Cooper Island and arrive early enough to pick up an overnight mooring buoy (no anchoring here please). Time for more snorkeling off Cistern Point, or while away the afternoon lounging on the beach. Day 3 Sail to The Baths (get there early) and pick up a buoy – plan to spend the morning here and have lunch. Dinghy ashore and explore the magnificent boulders and rock pools created by Mother Nature millions of years ago. This has got to be one of the most beautiful places on Earth. After lunch, sail to Trellis Bay to spend the night – there are many places to go ashore or plan to BBQ on board your yacht. Trellis Bay has full moon parties every month – not to be missed! You can also visit the home of the Caribbean Arts & Crafts Festival, Aragorn’s Studio, and pick up some superb local arts and crafts.

    BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS PROTECTED AREAS SYSTEM PLAN 2007-2017 APPROVED JANUARY 2008 National Parks Trust Chairman’s Message The approval of this Protected Areas System Plan is an achievement of national significance and represents the culmination of 27 years of conservation planning and public consultation within the British Virgin Islands (BVI). The development of a national parks system within the BVI began in the 1960s when Joseph R. O’Neal collaborated with U.S. philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller to set aside lands for conservation purposes. Mr. Rockefeller developed Little Dix Bay Resort in 1964 as the BVI’s first major tourist resort and was a pioneer in the Territory for sustainable and environmentally sensitive development. Joseph R. O’Neal and Laurance Rockefeller assisted the BVI to legally provide clearly delineated protected areas that are held in trust for the BVI community. I am especially honoured to serve as Chairman of the National Parks Trust at this time in its history and to participate in the realization of the vision held by my late father, Joseph Reynold O’Neal, under whose leadership as Founding Chairman of the Trust the initial development of a system plan of protected areas for the British Virgin Islands was begun over 47 years ago. Mr. Rockefeller’s insistence on completion of a system plan and his commitment of resources, before his demise, to ensure its realization is a worthy testament to his dedication to the conservation of the natural heritage of these islands. The protected areas within this system plan managed by various governmental agencies include unique geological sites, coastal landscapes, historical sites, sea bird populations, marine habitats, forestry areas and recreational sites.
