Abstract: Little is known about the ecology and demography of the genus Magnolia. Magnolia dealbata Zucc. is an endangered species endemic to Mexico. Two contrasting populations of M. dealbata (one from the grasslands and other from a secondary cloud forest) were studied. We asked the following questions: (a) Are size structure (diameter at breast height, DBH) and infrutescence production significantly different between the two populations? (b) What are the populations’ growth rates (λ) based on an initial 1987 study? (c) Are the associated species diversity indices of these M. dealbata populations significantly different? The results show no significant differences between the population size structure (p=.094); the growth rates of the populations were 0.992 in grassland and 1.053 in secondary cloud forest. The number of infrutescences produced in year 2001 and DBH relationship were significantly linear (p<.001) in both populations, and there was no significant difference (p>.01) between their slopes. The diversity indices were not significantly different (p>.05), and only 54% of the species were common to both sites. Our study suggests that both populations are relatively stable and that the management history could impact more on the species composition than on the diversity indices. -

RESÚMEN La Magnolia mexicana , es una especie de importancia ecológica, medicinal e histórica, amenazada de extinción de acuerdo con la NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, debido a la pérdida de su hábitat, la tala clandestina y la dificultad reportada para propagarla por semilla; sumado a esto, la reciente reclasificación a nuevas especies a partir de lo que se consideraba una sola, ha significado la reducción de su área de distribución a Veracruz, Oaxaca y Puebla, con interrogantes a los límites de su distribución debido a la presencia de ejemplares posiblemente de la misma especie en el Estado de México, que tendrían relación además por sus antecedentes históricos. Townsend Peterson Natural History Museum, University of Kansas A PROJECT OF COLORADO BIRD OBSERVATORY September 1, 1997 1 PROLOGUE The Colorado Bird Observatory (CBO) was founded in 1988 to address the conservation needs of birds in the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains. CBO has employed a broad spectrum of tactics toward this end, including intensive study of endangered species; habitat assessments for the birds of endangered ecosystems; monitoring of population status of Colorado's breeding avifauna; and setting conservation, management, and monitoring priorities for breeding Neotropical migratory birds for all 50 U.S. states. In addition to a strong research program, CBO has implemented programs aimed at improving environmental education in both Mexico and the United States. Given that many of Colorado’s birds are Neotropical migrants, many of CBO's activities have focused on determining habitat requirements, population status, and conservation priorities for these species. Recognizing the critical dependency of Neotropical migrants on adequate wintering habitats, as well as the needs of the many species of birds resident in Mexico, many of which occur nowhere else, CBO began work in western Mexico in the winter of 1991B1992, focusing on the five Pacific coastal states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Oaxaca. From these initial explorations, in an effort to contribute to the efficacy of conservation efforts in the region, the present effort was born C a summary and analysis of the status and needs of western Mexico's protected natural areas. -

Universidad de Guadalajara Background The family Magnoliaceae is one of the most primitive taxa of angiosperms. Knowledge of this family is essential for the researches on the origin, evolution, biogeography and systematics of the angiosperms. Most of magnolias are widely enjoyed for their beautiful tree shape, large colorful fragrant flowers and elegance. For centuries, many species are grown in different cultures as ornamentals, timber or used for medicine. Furthermore, many species are dominant constituents of tropical, subtropical or warm temperate forests. Due to degradation of natural habitats, many magnolias have become endangered or extinct in the wild. For these reasons, it is important to engage in multi-disciplinary Magnolia subjects, and rescue the rare and endangered species. In relation to their size of territory Costa Rica and Ecuador and are the richest countries in terms of their number of species of Magnoliaceae, while, in terms of absolute numbers, China, Vietnam, Mexico and Colombia are the richest. The Zamora Cinchipe region of Ecuador with 9 species in 10,000 km2 is the riches region in species of Magnoliaceae in the neotropics, followed by Antioquia, Colombia. Over the last decade, a large number of new species of Neotropical Magnolia have been described so the proportion of New World species of Magnoliaceae has increased considerably from 1/3 to nearly one half.
