SYSTEMATICS OF THE MEGADIVERSE SUPERFAMILY GELECHIOIDEA (INSECTA: LEPIDOPTEA) DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Sibyl Rae Bucheli, M.S. ***** The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Dr. John W. Wenzel, Advisor Dr. Daniel Herms Dr. Hans Klompen _________________________________ Dr. Steven C. Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae.

The essential oil chemical compositions were derived from the genus Dittrichia L. plants were examined in the present study. The study material, Dittrichia viscosa (L). Greuter and Dittrichia graveolens (L.) Greuter were collected West Anatolian (Aydın/Turkey) ecological conditions in September- October 2015. Essential oils of the leaves were extracted by Clevenger apparatus. Essential oil compositions were determined with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) device. The results from the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that the obtained levo-bornyl acetate from D. graveolens was with the highest percentage (25.23%). The 2,4-dioxo-3-methyl-6-isopropyl pyrido[2,3-b]-[1,4]pyrazine in D. viscosa was with the highest percentage (29.02%). However, we lack demographic data for most species, and the data we have are often geographically aggregated. We determined to what extent existing data can be extrapolated to predict pop- ulation performance across larger sets of species and spatial areas. We used 550 matrix models, across 210 species, sourced from the COMPADRE Plant Matrix Database, to model how climate, geographic proximity and phylogeny predicted population performance.

In: Kahanpää J, Salmela J (Eds) Checklist of the Diptera of Finland. ZooKeys 441: 291–303. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.441.7586 Abstract A checklist of the Agromyzidae (Diptera) recorded from Finland is presented. 279 (or 280) species are currently known from the country. Phytomyza linguae Lundqvist, 1947 is recorded as new to Finland. Keywords Checklist, Finland, Diptera, biodiversity, faunistics Introduction The Agromyzidae are called the leaf-miner or leaf-mining flies and not without reason, although a substantial fraction of the species feed as larvae on other parts of living plants. While Agromyzidae is traditionally placed in the superfamily Opomyzoidea, its exact relationships with other acalyptrate Diptera are poorly understood (see for example Winkler et al. 2010). Two subfamilies are recognised within the leaf-mining flies: Agromyzinae and Phytomyzinae. Both are now recognised as natural groups (Dempewolf 2005, Scheffer et al. 2007). Unfortunately the genera are not as well defined: at least Ophiomyia, Phy- toliriomyza and Aulagromyza are paraphyletic in DNA sequence analyses (see Scheffer et al.

This renders H. invadens an interesting target in our efforts to find new bioactive secondary metabolites from members of the Xylariales. So far, only volatile organic compounds have been reported from H. invadens, but no investigation of non-volatile compounds had been conducted. Furthermore, a phylogenetic assignment following recent trends in fungal taxonomy via a multiple sequence alignment seemed practical. A culture of H. invadens was thus subjected to submerged cultivation to investigate the produced secondary metabolites, followed by isolation via preparative chromatography and subsequent structure elucidation by means of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS).

  • Chapter 4. Fodder Value of Poaceae Family Species in the Steppe Zone of Ukraine
191 Chapter 4. Fodder value of Poaceae family species in the steppe zone of Ukraine B. O. Baranovsky, L. O. Karmyzova, I. А. Ivanko Oles Honchar Dnipro National University Introduction 1 Poaceae is one of the largest families of vascular plants. It has about 10 thousand species and 700 genera. Members of the fam- ily are spread worldwide. They often participate as dominants and edificators in composition of vegetation cover in grassy types of the Earth vegetation. Members of Poaceae family hold an important position within other plants (food, feeding, medicinal, industrial), useful for mankind. Poaceae are among the ten most widely represented families in all areas of the world. Participation of Poaceae, as well as other monocotyledonous plants decreases with the distance from the most East to moderate, and to equatorial latitudes (Tolmachev, 1974). Within the territory of Ukraine Poaceae family includes 71 gen- era (of which only 4 genera in the cultural state) and 208 species; of which only 15 genera are in the cultural state (Determinant of Higher Plants of Ukraine, 1987). Long-term anthropogenic influence on the territory of the steppe of Ukraine has led to a significant transformation of native vegeta- tion. Nowadays, there is a significant reduction in species and ceno- tic diversity of ecosystems, in most of which the members of Poaceae family (grasses) dominate. 1 Baranovsky B. O., Karmyzova L.
