1 CRICKET CLUB JUNIOR MEMBERS HANDBOOK 2014

1. WELCOME TO GOMERSAL CRICKET CLUB

This booklet has been produced to help both parents and players gain maximum enjoyment from membership of Gomersal Cricket Club. The club’s primary aim is to provide opportunities for young people from the age of eight years to receive quality coaching and competition in cricket. The instructions for players and parents/carers are particularly important. Following them will help you, your fellow players and everyone associated with the club benefit from the “Gomersal CC Experience”. Please read through this booklet and keep it for reference. Gomersal Cricket Club is working towards being registered ‘Club Mark’ registered. Club Mark is a national accreditation awarded by the ECB in conjunction with Sport which acknowledges that the club will comply with a set of quality standards, in terms of club administration, the playing & cricket practice programme, our duty of care and child protection, sports equity and ethics and general club management. All Coaching is by qualified coaches who have been screened for their suitability to be working with young people. We are extremely proud of the progress made with our Junior and Youth sections of the club. We are particularly grateful to all those who have helped out in whatever way the can. The Junior and Youth teams all have a dedicated band of coaches.

The club currently has teams at Under 9’s, 11’s, 13’s, 15’s and 17’s age groups and you will appreciate that running such a large sporting club is an expensive business. The General Committee of the club work hard to continue to develop fundraising programme to help secure our income. This includes grant aid and sponsorship. All age groups are expected to give their full support to these activities and we expect full participation from all parents. If you feel that you can volunteer for anything that will help us run the club better or more effectively please let us know. We are always looking for new members to join the committee.

The Gomersal CC Junior section appreciate any amount of sponsorship money to help fund the club teams. If you are interested in sponsoring a team(s), match (£10) or a match ball (£5), please inform a Group Manager or Coach. Indeed we want to seek your views on all facets of the club and if there is anything you would like to say, please seek out any member of the junior section committee. Everyone concerned with the management of Gomersal Cricket Club is anxious that all members derive maximum benefit from being a part of the “Gomersal CC Experience” and are always seeking to improve what we offer. Your contribution and your opinions are important to us. Finally, we are very lucky to have excellent club facilities. Parents please take advantage of the club facilities and we look forward to seeing you in the bar.

Enjoy your season at Gomersal Cricket Club

2. WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE AT GOMERSAL CRICKET CLUB

Our mission is to provide a safe and secure environment in which young people can participate in cricket so enabling the development of their physical and social skills. Above all we want the game of cricket to be enjoyed by all those who participate in it. Cricket is a fast dynamic and extremely physical sport and as such and participant must have a desire to play and enjoy the game, please do not force young people to play cricket if the do not wish to. Do not as parents try and live your cricket through your child.

We also want to provide the infrastructure through which players can progress to Heavy Woollen, Schools, , ECB selection and professional club selection.

3. INFORMATION FOR PARENTS / CARERS

Welcome to Gomersal Cricket Club. You are as welcome here as your children are. You can join the club as a member either individually or with a family membership. Whichever way you choose you will enjoy being a part of your cricket club.

Please read the “Instruction to players” section carefully. Two points which you must note: Only paid up members can play & kit is only lost if it is unnamed.

To get the most of your child’s experience at Gomersal Cricket Club you can volunteer to help in some way or other. The more volunteers we have the less there is for everyone else to do. Here are some important areas where help is always wanted:  Transport to away matches.  Catering for home games both before the game and after.  Support and encourage your child as well as their team.  Help the age Group Manager/Coach in the cricket ground preparation on match day.

DO NOT JUST DROP AND GO. Gomersal Cricket Club is not a crèche. Ensure that your child is at the cricket practice ground / changing rooms and then inform the Coach of where and when you are to collect your child. I would like to take this opportunity to stress that you should at all times make arrangements for your child to travel to and from cricket practice sessions and matches. Players should arrive promptly. Also, you are responsible for collecting them at the end of each session, if they are not making their own way home. If for any reason you are going to be late picking your child up, please contact the relevant Coaching staff and let them know. You are required to complete the accompanying club membership registration form and Parental Consent form. For the safety of your child it is important that the Club is informed of all existing medical conditions and / or allergies diagnosed to your child. Medical Conditions Ensure you fill the medical forms in fully and inform your coach of any variances that occur to these during the year. If we are aware we can take the appropriate action.

Please note: Any fines received by the club due to breaches of our code of conduct by parents or spectators from outside agencies, playing leagues or governing bodies are the responsibility of the offending person. Failure to accept responsibility for such fines will result in the suspension of the players concerned. The Executive reserves the right to impose further disciplinary measures against offending individuals.

3 GOMERSAL CRICKET CLUB JUNIOR MEMBERS HANDBOOK 2014 Fixtures A fixture list will be issued at the start of each season. These dates and locations are subject to change. Keep an eye on the notice board. The team selection for cricket games and travel arrangements will be posted on the club notice board. It is the player/parents responsibility to check if you have been selected to play. Never travel directly to away matches without first informing your child’s Coach / Group Manager.

Attendance Group Managers/ Coaches will maintain an attendance register. Regular attendance helps both the team and the coach, but most importantly helps your child to progress. If your child cannot attend let the coach know. Do not let your child play if they are carrying an injury. If in doubt, ask.

Bad Weather If you feel that the weather will cause either cricket practice or a match to be postponed please phone your child’s coach to check. Do not travel to an away match without checking you may have a wasted journey.

Suggestions and comments Many parents / carers may have ideas that will help the club progress. Don’t keep them under your hat – tell any committee member. They will listen! If you have lots of ideas – then join the committee! Your club needs you!

Sponsorship There are always sponsorship opportunities for individuals or companies. See a committee member if you or your company are able to sponsor any part of the club.

Umpires These are the most important person on the cricket ground. They turn out every weekend and go to cricket grounds where they may not know anyone. They make every game possible, without them there simply is no game. Of course they make mistakes, no one is infallible, but they don’t make them deliberately or maliciously. They are doing there up most to make everyone’s day an enjoyable experience. It is beholden on everyone concerned with Gomersal Cricket Club to do what they can to make the match day officials welcome. The umpire’s enjoyment of the “Gomersal CC Experience” is paramount to everyone associated with the club. It is up to spectators and players to give umpires utmost respect at all times. Respect goes two ways. If we respect the umpire, the umpire will have respect for us, our players and our club. Sometimes umpiring can be a thankless task, but at Gomersal Cricket Club we must make sure it is not.

The umpire’s authority on the cricket field is ABSOLUTE and WITHOUT QUESTION.

9. CHILD PROTECTION AT GOMERSAL CRICKET CLUB

We take our responsibility very seriously. (as adopted by the ECB’S Safe Hands Policy for protecting children).

It is widely accepted that it is the responsibility of every adult to protect children from abuse. Child abuse and particularly child sexual abuse can arouse strong emotions in those facing such a situation. It is very important to understand these feelings and not allow them to interfere with your judgement about any action to take.

Abuse can occur within many situations including the home, school and sporting environments. It can happen to your children. Some individuals will actively seek employment and voluntary work with children in order to harm them. Everyone working within cricket, either in a paid or voluntary capacity, together with those working in affiliated organisations has a role to play in safeguarding the welfare of children and preventing their abuse. All adult club members and coaches may have regular contact with children and can be a very important link in identifying cases where a child needs protection.

When establishing guidelines concerning the protection of children it is important to recognise that the club has both a moral and legal obligation to ensure that, when it is given responsibility for children, it provides them with the highest possible standard of care.

The junior cricket committee and members of Gomersal Cricket Club, Heavy Woollen Cricket, Schools Cricket, Yorkshire Cricket, and The ECB recognise that they have that high degree of responsability:

 To safe guard and promote the interests and well being of all children with whom they are working.  To take all reasonable practical steps to protect children from harm, discrimination or degrading treatment.  To respect their rights wishes and feelings

Child protection procedures will:

 Offer safeguards to the children with whom we work, to all our club members, volunteers and Coaches.  Help to maintain the professionalism and the safeguards of good practice, which we are associated with the ECB and its SPIRIT OF CRICKET campaign.

It is recognised that any procedure is only as effective as the ability and skill of those who operate them. Gomersal Cricket Club is committed to the sound recruitment, provision of support and appropriate cricket practice of all their volunteers and coaches. This cricket practice will enable them to work together with parents / carers and other organisations to ensure that the needs and welfare of the children remain paramount.

Gomersal Cricket Club supports all aspects of child protection and as such we encourage total openness in our work with young people.

Therefore Coaches will not:  Spend time alone with a child away from others.  Take a child alone on car journeys.  Take a child to their homes.

10. GUIDELINES FOR CLUB CHANGING POLICY

At Gomersal Cricket Club changing room facilities are available for both junior and senior teams.

On occasions when junior matches are on the same night as senior training, separate changing rooms will be available for the different age groups. These changing rooms may be adjacent and young players need to be aware that adults may be using the changing rooms nearby.

At the start of the cricket season the changing facilities may be shared with senior football. Coaches or other adults from the club should not change or shower in the same changing room as the junior players.

Junior players playing in senior matches have to share adult changing facilities. Adults should avoid being alone with a young player in the changing rooms even where that young player is playing for the senior side.

It is accepted that some players do not feel comfortable showering and changing in front of others. In such instances the player should be encouraged to change at home.

11. ANTI-BULLYING

Statement of Intent Gomersal Cricket Club is committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all of our junior cricketers, so they can play and enjoy cricket in a relaxed and secure surroundings.

• The club adopts and supports the ECB Cricket Equity Policy and a copy of this can be found below.

Cricket Equality Policy

The ECB, in all its activities, is fully committed to the principles of equality of opportunity in cricket in England and Wales and aims to ensure that no individual is discriminated against on the grounds of age, gender, disability, race, parental or marital status, pregnancy, religion or belief or sexual orientation. The ECB will work with partners in cricket, including the First Class County Cricket Clubs, the County Cricket Boards, and Chance to Shine, as well as individual clubs and leagues under the ECB’s jurisdiction to implement these equal opportunity principles across cricket in England and Wales. In doing so, the ECB will endeavour to create access and opportunities for all those individuals who wish to participate, and are lawfully eligible to participate, in cricket in England and Wales in whatever capacity. The ECB specifically supports initiatives by other organisations within cricket which recognise the principles of equality of opportunity and treatment such as the International Cricket Council Anti-Racism Policy and the Professional Cricketers Association’s Racism Awareness Campaign. The ECB is also a signatory to the Government’s Charter for Action tackling Homophobia and Transphobia in Sport.

Gomersal Cricket Club reserves the right to discipline its employees and cancel the membership of any individuals under its direct control and those representing the club, who practice any form of discrimination on the grounds of age, gender, disability, race parental or marital status, pregnancy, religion or belief, or sexual orientation.

14. GUIDELINES FOR DEALING WITH AN INCIDENT / ACCIDENT

Don’t worry we don’t have many! But if we do here are some guidelines:

 Stay calm but act swiftly and observe the situation.  Assess whether there is danger of further injuries.  Listen to what the injured person is saying.  Alert the first aider who should take appropriate action for minor injuries  In the event of an injury requiring specialist treatment, call the emergency services.  Deal with the rest of the team and ensure that they are adequately supervised.  DO NOT move some one who you believe has major injuries. Wait for the emergency paramedics.  Contact the injured persons parent or carer.  Complete an incident / accident report form.

Incident / accident report forms are available in the club house. All age groups have a qualified first aider assigned to them.

A first aid kit can be found in the entrance of the changing rooms for those little emergencies.

15. HEALTH AND SAFETY

Gomersal Cricket Club considers the welfare and safety of all members of the club and visitors to Oxford Road as paramount. The club regularly conducts a risk assessment of all its facilities and equipment.

14 GOMERSAL CRICKET CLUB JUNIOR MEMBERS HANDBOOK 2014

16. TRANSPORTATION GUIDANCE

Gomersal Cricket Club has fixtures at home and away and therefore it is necessary to transport young players to other cricket grounds.

It is the responsibility of the players or parents/carer/guardian of young players to organise transportation to and from matches. They may arrange lifts with other players or parents/carers/guardian of young players.

Where a player needs help with transportation to an away fixture it is their responsibility to get to Gomersal Cricket Club or an agreed venue from where a lift can be arranged.

Club coaches are not responsible for young players whilst they are on route to and from venues. However they are responsible for young players once they arrive at the venue until they have been collected following the match or training session.

Coaches should therefore aim to arrive in good time for matches and training session, or designate a volunteer to be responsible until s/he arrives. S/he should not leave the ground until the young players have been collected or released into the charge of a responsible adult following matches and training sessions.

Coaches should have contact details for all young players in his/her team so that they can make contact with parents/carers if they are late collecting their child after a match or training session. Permission should be sought if another adult offers to drop a young player home if this has not been organised between the parents/carers prior to the match or training session. Coaches should avoid giving lifts to young players. However it is accepted that at times this is unavoidable. Lifts should only be given to young players with the consent of the parent/carer.

17. USE OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Permission is sought from parents/carers/guardians on the young player’s registration form for photographs to be taken and published on the clubs website or in the media. Where a parent withholds consent, photographs of that child will not be published by the club.

Permission is sought from the young player on the young player’s registration form for them to be photographed or filmed for training purposes. Any such film would be shared and discussed with the young player concerned to try to improve his/her cricketing skills. At finals events or tournaments team photographs are regularly taken and published on the website to celebrate the club’s success. Any parent/carer has the right to withdraw their child from that photograph.

At events where there are children from other clubs or schools present permission is sought before taking and publishing photographs on the club website.

15 GOMERSAL CRICKET CLUB JUNIOR MEMBERS HANDBOOK 2014 Where an unknown member of the public is taking photographs of the children a member of the cricket club would approach that person and ensure they are not going to publish any of the photos without the consent of the parent/carer of the young player concerned.

Where a member of the public does not appear to have valid reason to be taking photographs the club would ask him/her to leave the ground.

Parents/carers are free to take photographs at the cricket ground as long as they do not publish them or sell them on without permission.

18. DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES

Whilst we would never expect to resort to it, this is our disciplinary procedures statement.

 Gomersal Cricket Club regards discipline both on and off the field as sacrosanct.  Gomersal Cricket Club regards the authority of the umpire on the field as beyond question.  We will encourage all players and spectators to respect that authority.  In case of breach of discipline on the field Gomersal Cricket Club will follow the guidelines and regulations encapsulated in the ECB Laws and Disciplinary procedures contained in the Heavy Woollen handbook.  In case of breach of Gomersal Cricket Club laws other than on the field of play, the person or persons perpetrating the breach of laws will initially be referred to the Junior Committee. Depending on the nature of the breach the club shall have the right to terminate that person or person’s membership forthwith.
