In the books of the New Testament, though we find references to him, there is not any detailed information about him. St. Nicodemus the Athonite (18th century AD), gathered all the available biblical and historical information about St. Luke. He was born in Antioch, Syria. He was a doctor. He also liked to paint. Our Church regards him as the first iconographer, who painted an icon of the Theotokos. As doctor he was very well known for his skills. St. Paul baptized Luke into the Christian faith. St. Paul in his letters often speaks about an illness which troubles him and most likely he chose Luke to be with him because he was in need of a doctor. Besides his medical services, St. Luke was proved St. Paul’s most dedicated follower. St. Paul writes: “Only Luke is with me” (2 Ti 4:11). St. Luke wrote two Books of the New Testament, the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. He died peacefully at the age of eighty and was buried in Thebe (Southeast Greece). The Church commemorates his memory on October 18. ORDER OF HYMNS FOLLOWING THE SMALL ENTRANCE Απολυτίκια Apolytikia Ἀναστάσιμον Ἀπολυτίκιον. Ἦχος β΄ Resurrectional Apolytikion. PAUL’S LETTER TO THE COLOSSIANS 4:5-11, 14-18 READER: KATY CONSTANTINIDES PROKEIMENON: THEIR VOICE HAS GONE OUT INTO ALL THE EARTH. VERSE: THE HEAVENS DECLARE THE GLORY OF GOD. rethren, conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer every one. Tychicos will tell you all about my affairs; he is a B beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, and with him Onesimos, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of yourselves. They will tell you of everything that has taken place. Aristarchos my fellow prisoner greets you, and Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions if he comes to you, receive him), and Jesus who is called Justos. These are the only men of the circumcision among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me. Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you. Give my greetings to the brethren at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house. And when this letter has been read among you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you read also the letter from Laodicea. And say to Archippos, "See that you fulfill the ministry which you have received in the Lord." I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my fetters. Grace be with you. Amen. Today’s Gospel Reading: Luke 10:16-21 he Lord said to his disciples, "He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me." The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!" And he said T to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will." “Take up and read, take up and read.” St. Augustine, Confessions 8:12 DIVINE LITURGY CONTINUES ON PAGE 51 OF THE DIVINE LITURGY BOOK GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is offered in the Orthodox Church only to those individuals baptized and chrismated (confirmed) in the Orthodox Faith. To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church; and, all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: that is, examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting. If you have any further questions about this, please speak with the clergy. Women should remove all lipstick when approaching for Holy Communion. Please let parents with their babies and the elderly approach first. Thank you. Bill Aicklen Demetrios Hadjisimos Owen Jones Greg Koutrelakos Contance Nagle Ned Biehler WELCOME EVERYONE!
