Press Release Press release Contact Clothilde Naudeau [email protected] awarewomenartists.com PRESENTATION AWARE Prizes 2 Women Artists Less Recognised Than Men The AWARE Prizes for Women Artists were born from the realisation that women are significantly underrepresented amongst the artists celebrated by the awards that mark the art world. While women are in the majority during their studies in art schools, they make up only a minority of the nominees and winners of the most prestigious contemporary art prizes. Since the creation of awards such as France’s Prix Marcel Duchamp, Britain’s Turner Prize, the Hugo Boss Prize in the United States, and Japan’s Praemium Imperiale, amongst others, women artists represent between just 20 and 30% of selected and promoted artists. With equality in gender-neutral prizes in mind, certain institutions have chosen to promote the work of women artists through dedicated awards, as seen with the Max Mara Art Prize for Women in the United Kingdom and Germany’s Gabriele Münter Preis. In France, surprisingly, no such a prize existed before the creation of the AWARE Prizes in 2017. The AWARE Prizes for Women Artists receive support from the Ministry of Culture, the CHANEL Fund for Women in the Arts and Culture and Élysées Monceau, in partnership with the CNAP, d.c.a national network, Platform and Manuella Éditions. She created her first bronze sculptures, and held her first solo gallery shows, in Rome from 1957 to 1959, when she also visited Paris, Egypt, Greece and Turkey, expanding her artistic horizons beyond the Western tradition. She settled in Paris in 1961 and married French photographer Marc Riboud.     THRESHING FLOORS AS SACRED SPACES IN THE HEBREW BIBLE by Jaime L. Waters A dissertation submitted to The Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland August 2013 © 2013 Jaime L. Waters All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Vital to an agrarian community’s survival, threshing floors are agricultural spaces where crops are threshed and winnowed. As an agrarian society, ancient Israel used threshing floors to perform these necessary activities of food processing, but the Hebrew Bible includes very few references to these actions happening on threshing floors. Instead, several cultic activities including mourning rites, divination rituals, cultic processions, and sacrifices occur on these agricultural spaces. Moreover, the Solomonic temple was built on a threshing floor. Though seemingly ordinary agricultural spaces, the Hebrew Bible situates a variety of extraordinary cultic activities on these locations. In examining references to threshing floors in the Hebrew Bible, this dissertation will show that these agricultural spaces are also sacred spaces connected to Yahweh. Three chapters will explore different aspects of this connection. Divine control of threshing floors will be demonstrated as Yahweh exhibits power to curse, bless, and save threshing floors from foreign attacks. Accessibility and divine manifestation of Yahweh will be demonstrated in passages that narrate cultic activities on threshing floors. Cultic laws will reveal the links between threshing floors, divine offerings and blessings. One chapter will also address the sociological features of threshing floors with particular attention given to the social actors involved in cultic activities and temple construction. By studying references to threshing floors as a collection, a research project that has not been done previously, the close relationship between threshing floors and the divine will be visible, and a more nuanced understanding of these spaces will be achieved.

While in middle school and high school, she became interested in science and competitive diving. Jannette exceled at diving and traveled throughout the United States and other countries with diving teams. She earned a full scholarship to Southern Methodist University (SMU), but due to an accident shortly after graduation from high school in 1980, she became paraplegic. Starting in 1981, Jannette attended the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), where she studied geology and participated in adaptive track and field under the direction of Jim Hayes. While attending UTA, she was selected to the 1988 U.S. Paralympic Track and Field team, and Table Tennis team in Seoul, South Korea. In 1992 she was selected again to compete with the U.S. Paralympic Team in Barcelona, Spain. Upon graduating from UTA, Jannette went back to SMU to study law. During her time there she collaborated with architects to make SMU more accessible to people with disabilities. After graduating law school, she and a partner began to practice civil rights law, helping the communities and business in and around the Dallas area.

(Wendy Golding 2012) ii SUMMARY In this dissertation I examine the role played by the ancient Near Eastern serpent in apotropaic and prophylactic magic. Within this realm the serpent appears in roles in healing and protection where magic is often employed. The possibility of positive and negative roles is investigated. The study is confined to the Bronze Age in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Syria-Palestine. The serpents, serpent deities and deities with ophidian aspects and associations are described. By examining these serpents and deities and their roles it is possible to incorporate a comparative element into his study on an intra- and inter- regional basis. In order to accumulate information for this study I have utilised textual and pictorial evidence, as well as artefacts (such as jewellery, pottery and other amulets) bearing serpent motifs.
