Undergraduate Student Handbook 2017-2020 The Mico University College Undergraduate STUDENT HANDBOOK 2017-2020 THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE PLEDGE I PROMISE, on my honour, that I will obey all university college rules and submit to the discipline of the university college as exercised by the President, his staff and the student officers whom they recognise. I PROMISE that my appearance and conduct outside, as well as inside the university college precincts, will be such as will enhance the highest traditions of The Mico. I PROMISE that I will do all that is in my power to raise the standard of the university college, in conduct, as well as in work and games. I PROMISE that I will never, by word or deed, try to lower the standard of any other student or make it harder for him/her to maintain his/her ideals. I UNDERSTAND that the Directors will require me to leave the university college, at whatever stage of my course I may have reached, if they are satisfied for any reason that I am not making sufficient progress or I am in any way unfit to remain a student or become a teacher. I PROMISE to abide by the decision of the Directors and to accept it as final. THE MICO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE 2017-2020 UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT HANDBOOK DISCLAIMER The Mico University College’s Undergraduate Student Handbook was developed to provide students and staff members with a convenient set of guidelines for the operations within the institution. While every care was taken to eliminate errors, students are required to monitor their Mico emails and check with the Faculties or other operational Departments for updates and corrections that may have been made subsequent to the finalization of this edition of the Handbook. In addition, The Mico University College reserves the right to alter, amend or modify sections of the Handbook, while ensuring that its operations are always geared towards the benefit of its students and staff. Any amendments that are to take effect before the release of the next edition of the Handbook will be communicated through The Mico’s email system using email addresses with themico.edu.jm domain. Such communiqués will state clearly if such are new regulations superseding and nullifying those in this edition of the Handbook. PURPOSE AND SCOPE This Undergraduate Handbook is intended for use by i) prospective students, ii) new and continuing students, and (iii) staff. It is a reference handbook for the groups mentioned above and is intended to serve as a general source for Faculty regulations and programme information. The regulations, however, are to be used as a supplement rather than a substitute for the official sources of University policies and procedures. Wherever documents indicate Student Regulations, it is to the regulations contained herein that they refer. The course and unit details provided in this edition of the Handbook are for those students who commence their studies in Semester 1 of the 2017-18 academic year - students who began their studies prior to this should refer to the archived Handbook edition for the year in which they started their programme.     International Research and Review: Journal of Phi Beta Volume 3, Number 1, Fall 2013 Delta Honor Society for International Scholars Caribbean Women Finding a Balance Between Returning to Higher Education and Being Successful: Voices from Jamaica Marsha Black-Chen, Ed.D. The Mico University College Abstract Over the last two decades there has been a dramatic increase in continuing education enrollment among non-traditional-aged females both in Jamaica and overseas. This article explores the academic experiences of Jamaican women returning to college, placing emphasis on support services within the higher education institutions attended and on these women’s successes, challenges and strategies for successful academic and social integration into the higher education environment. A narrative inquiry and a feminist approach to research making women more visible provided this study’s findings, which include the women’s valuing education, feeling accomplished, and feeling empowered. Integration into these environments, a major challenge, includes physical and psychological pressures, family obligations and financial difficulties. Amplifying these women’s voices is of the essence, in understanding the efficacy of this student population. Recommendations for further research are provided and the study’s findings hold significant implications for non-traditional/part-time/evening college students in higher education in Jamaica. Recommendations include, higher education institutions and policy makers learning more about the academic experiences of women over 25, and increases in the flexibility of the environment as it relates to support services. Jamaica’s social and philosophical music belong mainly to that tradition, which includes the use of rhythms, timbral, and melodic resources that exist independently of harmony. Already in this century, Jamaicans have created two totally new music - nyabinghi, which performs a philosophical function and reggae, which performs a social function.
