THE CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2020

raduating Class of 2020, you are to be congratulated, having triumphed despite the many challenges associated with the completion of your programmes, and the adjustment to the new dynamics associated with a pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has given us new insights in how connected we all are, in our communities, in our country, and in the world. The pandemic has laid bare our vulnerabilities, our dependence, our isolation, but it has also highlighted our dedication, our commitment and our sacrifices in our fight to overcome this scourge. As graduates of The Mico University College at this unique time in our history, you will be challenged  to truly think outside of the box;  to be open to change, and be adaptable;  not to be paralysed by fear or failure;  to exemplify The Mico’s values of Integrity, Excellence in Performance, Leadership and Service to others More than ever, this is your moment, your opportunity to contribute to the shaping of your world. You have benefited significantly from your sojourn at The Mico, and much will be expected of you wherever you find yourselves, whether in the humblest of circumstances or in prominent positions, as the human need remains great and will require your talent and service. The Mico has provided you with the knowledge, skills and disposition to be able professionals and practitioners in your respective fields. You have been tested and found to be competent, but competence must be combined with ethical standards to be transformative and redeeming. So graduates, go forth from here not just celebrating your personal success but embracing a personal responsibility to contribute to the world in which you live, and being a change agent. You cannot be responsible for how you found the world, but you must accept responsibility for how you leave the world for the succeeding generation. I, therefore, encourage you to set new goals, seek new horizons, continue to make a significant difference in your world, do The Mico proud in all that you do and never forget her. God bless you in all your endeavours.

Roderick Karl James, CD, EdD (Honoris Causa)

3 THE MICO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CEREMONY FOR THE PRESENTATION OF GRADUATES 2020

THE PRO-CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2020

raduating Class of 2020, you are graduating in unusual times with the world in a crisis, caused by a novel coronavirus, but graduating in interesting times, as all crises bring opportunities. Therefore, this virus cannot mar your success, as you have triumphed despite its challenges. You have prevailed and successfully completed your programmes of study, which augers well for you personally as well as for the community. 1. Personally, your success indicates that you have achieved the requisite academic standard, which should be accompanied by a proficiency in various skills including life skills, and a strong positive attitude. In addition, this accomplishment can not only boost your confidence and provide a sense of achievement but also indicates your competence to pursue more advanced studies. 2. For the community, your success not only indicates your capacity to advance academically, but to enter the world of work. Your training and inclination should enable you to make a valuable contribution to your community, country and perhaps the world, and to have an important role in “advancing the welfare of the whole human race”. You have had the privilege of studying at the most prestigious teacher-training institution in Jamaica, and would have undoubtedly benefited tremendously from all that the institution has had to offer in terms of its infrastructure, resources (human and otherwise), as well as its remarkable legacy. You are not the same persons who walked through the doors of The Mico at the start of your programme. You have gained not only knowledge, but how to think; you have gained skills, insights and abilities, especially the ability to cope. To whom much has been given, much is expected. Therefore, your community (whether local or overseas) and the world await you with high expectations of you making a useful contribution and giving your service with respect to building and transforming your environment, and being innovative and a problem solver. You are The Mico’s Ambassadors, so “go and do it with thy might”. CONGRATULATIONS!!! May God continue to bless, guide, protect and inspire you wherever you live and serve.

Ryland T. Campbell, CD, FIMCJ, PhD, MA

THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2020

lass of 2020, congratulations! This stage of your life’s journey is at an end, and while much has changed in the recent past with a global pandemic, and acclimatization to the new conditions, your potential remains strong with an awesome future ahead of you. So on this the occasion of your graduation, you are encouraged to honour the past, celebrate the present, and embrace the future. Honour the past because your institution, The Mico has had a rich history. It has demonstrated its expertise in the training of teachers, its importance in contributing to national and regional development, and the distinction of its graduates in all fields and areas of production from education to politics. The institution and its graduates in the past have been resilient in overcoming setbacks rising like the phoenix from the ashes, and will do so again. In honouring the past, you must live up to The Mico’s noble traditions and values that embrace excellence in all endeavours, and show strength although you may be buffeted from time to time by changing circumstances. In celebrating the present, note that the present is all we have, as the past is gone and the future is an expectation. While you may enjoy the moment, to live in the present, you have to understand the world in which you are currently. The world’s changing nature requires flexibility and continuous adjustments. Living in the present allows you the chance to learn from the many events that are experienced daily, and it provides the opportunity to serve. Learning and service are the hallmarks of the Miconian. I, therefore, charge you to be Brand Ambassadors of The Mico, demonstrating these hallmarks wherever you are in the present. In embracing the future, there is no boundary to your imagination of a better one. There have been dramatic transformations in the world in which we live; hence, you have had to be adaptable, resourceful, open to new ideas and committed to a sense of community. You have been fortunate in being beneficiaries of our efforts to become a Smart University College, and being exposed to the new teaching and learning technologies, especially with respect to the online modalities. In preparing to embrace the future, you have to be an inquirer, initiator and innovator as well as critical thinker. As you go forward from today – honour your past, by ensuring that you hold fast to The Mico’s principles and core values: celebrate the present, by demonstrating excellence in your academic and professional pursuits and in your service to others; and embrace the future, by being adventurous, realizing your dreams, and committed to life-long learning. And The Mico has been integral in your reaching this milestone, the destination of your graduation, so never forget her – your Alma Mater. May God bless you!

Dr. Asburn Pinnock, JP

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The doctoral gown worn by the Honorary Graduands is made of solid gold with long sleeves and cuffs. There are three black bars of velvet on the sleeves. The gown is lined at the front with 4” wide black velvet.

The hood is of black shell lined with inner gold at top, white in the middle and gold at the bottom; bound all around with white.

A black velvet beret with gold silky tassel completes the doctoral academic regalia.

The colours black and gold are the colours of The Mico University College.

THE MACE

The Mico University Mace was designed to capture the ethos of an authentic Jamaican institution with an international reach primarily in teacher education but also in diverse disciplines in humanities and liberal arts.

The Mace is the highest official symbol of the university which embodies the objectives and mission of the university. It comprises of the:  Head:- This is made of the original University crest which is constructed in the pewter and symbolizes the connection between the past, present and future. The crest sits on top of a sphere, which represents the world signifying the internal reach of the university. Beneath the sphere is the crucible, which represents the melting pot of knowledge.  Shaft:- The shaft is constructed from native Jamaican cedar. It is conical in shape tapering from 3 ¼ inches to 2 inches over a length of 30 inches. At the top of the shaft is the name band which is silver superimposed on bronze. The hand grip is made of bronze.  Tail:- The tail of the mace is made of bronze in the shape of two open books signifying the university’s mission of exposing knowledge and education directly or indirectly to all who come within its reach.

THE CHANCELLOR’S MEDALLION

The medallion is the symbol of authority of the Chancellor who is the ceremonial head of The Mico University College. It must be worn at all university functions at which the Chancellor officiates or is in attendance. It should also be worn at the first meeting of the Board of Directors each year.

The medallion is made of sterling silver and 14K gold. It has a basic circular shape in sterling silver signifying the continuous, committed and uncompromising service to the university. The golden flames on each side of the circular ring depict the passion, quality educational and directional leadership that the Chancellor brings in guiding the path of the university. The circular ring flanks a golden disk that carries the crest of the university and is firmly anchored in the centre of the medallion. This signifies that the protection of the university is at the core of the Chancellor’s responsibility as chief ceremonial leader. The circular disk is however suspended in the centre of the outer ring, by three points, signifying the independence that is given to the administrative leaders to carry out the functions of the university on the three main planks: administrative integrity, academic excellence and financial stability.

The chain is made of sterling silver bars linked to miniature golden open books and is attached by small rings to the inscription "Chancellor" from which the pendant hangs. The open books symbolize scholarship. The link to the inscription "Chancellor" speaks to the over-arching presence of the Chancellor in ensuring the maintenance of scholarly work at all levels of the university.

This medallion was designed by Burchell Duhaney, a graduate, who studied Art and Crafts at The Mico. It should be noted that the Chancellor with his medal of authority must attend the first Board of Directors meeting annually.

When we go forth from the walls of the Mico, Forth to lead others as we have been led, See that we hold to ideals that are lofty, Emulate Mico’s illustrious dead.

Onward forever then children of the Mico, Build them a monument shining and great, Give them the witness of noble ambitions, Labour as they did for GOD and the State.

Life opens out with its vital decisions, Trials, perplexities, trouble and pain, See that we lose not the hopes and the visions, Breathe not the spirit of Mico in vain.

When for the future in far-away places, Tenderly time to our minds may restore, Voices familiar and friendly old faces, Shall we not long for the Mico once more?

Refrain: With your might, with your might, with your might, with your might, with your might! What your hands find to do - that’s the way! With a will in your work and your play With your might, with your might.
