SITE DEFINITION The development is heteroge- neous: large-scale commercial enterprises, two- to four-storey residential buildings (single-family homes, apartment buildings, ter- raced houses), and garden plots. To the north is the Bürgerpark, the site of a former garden show with extensive grassy areas, lakes, and various recreational uses. The main railway station is nearby and can be reached in ten minutes over the pedestrian and bicycle bridge to the west of the main sta- tion and an underground crossing area on Schlachthofstrasse. Vec- kenstedter Weg skirts the area on the east. The neighbourhood is framed by four roads and was all deve- loped at much the same time. Two through roads with low traffic frequency provide inner linkage. The housing development on the north-western corner, dating from ca. 1890–1930, was designed as housing for factory workers and staff. The large gardens were en- visaged as self-supporting. Other green areas are now used as allot- ments and growers’ gardens or are derelict. There is a kindergarten on Giesserweg, but currently no other Oblique aerial view Aerial view with perimeters facilities of a social nature. E16 LIVING CITIES Wernigerode Germany HOW MUST BE DEVELOPPED AND CONNECTED METABO- LISM AND INCUSIVITY? The two project sites mark the corners of a space that is today largely garden land with some small-scale development (former growers’ gardens). From an urban planning point of view, it would Photo Veckenstedter Weg 76-80 be interesting to link traditional concepts from the garden city and settlement movements with the increased attention now being given to green spaces in the town for social and ecological reasons. The internal development of cities, which makes sense from an eco- logical point of view (reductions in land use, sealed-surface areas, traffic requirements), means that today’s open spaces must be urban-architecturalOriginal plan Veckenstedter map Weg Photo Veckenstedter Weg 76-80 more than places of contemplation or ecosystem services. They can make an important contribution to socio-ecologically sustainable urban development, both as com- munity gardens and as sites of local food production. There are no plans to build on the study site in the near future, but suggestions should be offered about what the future ‘Living City’ could look like. Current debates – such as the populist polarization between ‘single-family homes’ on the one hand and ‘prefabricated housing’ on the other – show the urgent need for more differentiated proposals and new ideas of urban Photo Veckenstedter Weg 14 a living (‘urban imaginaries’), which can serve as models far beyond Wernigerode. Ideas for continuing diversity of use and for a mixture of housing with an integrative character are desirable. Propositions on sustai- nability and the circular economy are also welcome. Also appro- priate would be a mobility and energy concept that is adaptable to the future. The process aims to develop a sustainable and ecological mixed- use framework plan, with a view to practicable development in smaller building and development phases. Landmark 4 Brocken ® On the 17th of November, 2015, during the 38th UNESCO General Assembly, the 195 member states of the United Nations resolved to introduce a new title. As a result, Geoparks can be distinguished as UNESCO Global Geoparks. As early as 2004, 25 European and Chinese Geoparks had founded the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). In autumn of that year Geopark Harz · Braunschweiger Land · Ostfalen became part of the network. In addition, there are various regional networks, among them the European Geoparks Network (EGN). The finds come originally from one mesolithic, three neolithic, four iron-aged, one migra tion period and eight medieval sites. Representatives ofPelecanus crispus, Ardea cinerea, Anas pla- tyrhynchos, Anser anser, A. albifrons, Branta leucopsis, Aquila chrysaetus, Accipiter gentilis, Haliaeetus albicilla, Circus cyaneus, Falco peregrinus, Lyrurus tetrix, Tetrao urogallus, Perdix per- dix, Grus grus, Otis tarda, Scolopax rusticola, Columba palumbus, Strix aluco, Asio flammeus, Cor- vus corax, C. frugilegus and C. monedula were proved. The Lohmeyer Families !"#$%&'#()*+,+&#-+).*"*&#/01234050670

The Lohmeyer Families !"#$%&'#()*+,+&#-+).*"*&#/01234050670# Reflecting on the meaning of the surname, it is possible that different Lohmeyer families arose simultaneously and independently from each other in different places. “Loh” means ‘forest’, specifically ‘oak forest’. Lohmeyer is therefore the farmer whose farm is located in or at the forest edge. A thousand years ago, the land on the lower Weser river was all covered with forest. When the Saxons came to cultivate the land, they first needed to burn and clear the forest before the land could be made arable. In northern Westfalia, even today2, there are often no closed villages, but every farm is located centrally to its landholdings, often ! hour from his nearest neighbour. Certainly, the word “loh” is purely of lower saxon origin3. The families named Lohmeyer, Lohmeier and Lomeier must therefore all originate from the Provinces Westfalia and Hannover and I have been successful in localising most of the families to that area, eight families even to the region close to Minden on the Weser. It is therefore not impossible that, had church records survived the time of the 30 Years War and had they existed before the ‘Bauernkriege’4, one might be able to prove a closer linkage between some of these families. To date, I am aware of the following 16 Lohmeyer families:5 1. MY father was originally ‘königlich dänischer Landbauinspektor’ and later ‘königlich preussischer Baurat für das Herzogtum Lauenburg’6, not to be confused with Carl Lohmeier, who was ‘Landbauinspektor’ of the Grand-Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, lived about 40 years earlier and who belonged to Family 7.

Historism 1 Wernigerode Castle Originally, a medieval fortress crowned the promontory of the Agnesberg. After the devastating ravages of the 30-Years-War (1618 – 1648), the work of reconstructing the fortress as a Baroque residence castle began under the Count ERNST OF STOLBERG-WERNIGERODE (1716 – 1778).
