DAVID SHANER – (1934 – 2002) David Shaner is an icon in the field of American ceramic art. He was instrumental in establishing the Archie Bray Foundation as a major player in ceramics, and he continued to support the Bray after retiring as its Resident Director. His exquisitely formed vessels with their understated glazes are a reflection of the man himself, a man in harmony with his environment and at peace in himself. Shaner was also noted as a teacher, a collector, and a generous contributor to the world of ceramic art and the field of environmental protection; his gardens which he called his “spiritual work” included notable specialized collections. While David Shaner’s life was cut short by ALS, his legacy continues through the David and Ann Shaner Resident Studio Complex which opened in 2005 at the Archie Bray foundation. ARTIST’S STATEMENT – DAVID SHANER “Basically, I am doing what I want to do and have never done anything else. By competing only with myself, I am not in pursuit of the crowd. Following one’s work is a joy and a challenge. One learns to do what is in one’s soul – thus revealing the connections between life and art. Although over the years I have become deeply involved with my tools and materials, simplicity of form and process have been my greatest achievements. And while the pots have been saturated with optimism, this has not always been easy to achieve. It is with a certain resilience I carry the belief that as life is enriched, the work can answer a resounding YES!”1 1. -

Hayashida, and I am the Insurance Commissioner of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ (Department) Insurance Division. The Department offers comments on this bill. The purpose of this bill is to require the 30-day lapse or termination notices for long-term care policies to be sent by certified mail, priority mail, or commercial delivery service, or other method of delivery requiring proof of delivery. Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS) chapter 431, article 10H, currently has several protections in place to ensure policyholders are notified of policy terminations or lapses, with sufficient time for policyholders to address unintentional lapses. HRS section 431:10H-208 sets forth secondary designee requirements for notices to protect against unintentional lapses, while HRS section 431:10H-209 ultimately provides for a 60-day period before policies may lapse or be terminated for nonpayment of premiums. 2123 w 21st Street | Minneapolis mn 55405 | 612 377 4669 | bockleygallery.com Frank Big Bear: Nativia Opening Reception: Friday, November 11, 6 to 8 pm Exhibition: November 10 through December 17, 2016 Gallery Hours: Wednesday through Saturday, Noon to 5 pm Bockley Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition Nativia by Duluth-based artist Frank Big Bear. In his 12th solo show at the gallery, Big Bear continues to explore the complex issues in force at the intersection of Native American and American popular cultures. Running throughout this offering of new paintings, drawings and a single collage is the broader leitmotif of the human figure and, more specifically, the portrait. Of note is Big Bear’s Multiverse #1, a large-scale collage where the artist utilized 120 gallery exhibition invitations as a support to express his ideas and actions, which he then organized into a grid pattern. Big Bear approached each card individually as if chapters in a book, collageing onto each surface a range of images culled from magazines, books, graphic novels and catalogues. This cacophony of visual information integrates images, signs and symbols drawn from Native culture with those of popular culture figures, objects and events such as famous artists and artworks, celebrities, models, and even animals. The individual cards are then modified as needed and organized into the larger compositional grid. Of note is another collage in the Multiverse series, Big Bear’s monumental The Walker Collage, Multiverse #10 commissioned by Walker Art Center. It will be unveiled at the November 19 celebratory opening of the museum’s redesigned main entrance on Vineland Place. -

CREATIVE HEARTBEAT Jun Kaneko and six decades in the arts. by JORIE JACOBI / Photography by ATTILIO D’AGOSTINO To make one of his signature five-ton “dango” sculptures, renowned Omaha-based artist and ceramic sculptor Jun Kaneko works with thick slabs of clay that have previously been worked by hand to remove any air bubbles, melding them together using any num- ber of techniques: it could be digging his fingers into the sides and moving them back and forth to create grooves that will be seamlessly sewn together in all of the materials’ pliable splendor; it could be smoothing the clay over with a number of tools, or just his palms. “I’m not sure if I like working with my hands or not. Clay is a very challenging material—that’s what I like,” he says. Completing the thing is a chaotic feat. Working at a scale this large requires pageantry: several studio assistants, rolling wooden platforms with wheels, levers, a massive kiln— and time. It can take up to three weeks alone for the base of each piece to become dry enough to support the additional slabs of clay that come next.
