Quarterback Alex Schmidt scored on a five yard run and then connected with Gunner Polencheck on the two-point pass conversion. Was Mercer-Butternut about to rise up and win its first foot- ball game of the season? "It was exciting for the play- ers, the fans and the staff," head coach Matt Schoeneman said. "I thought we came out and were aggressive. We opened up some eyes today." But the fun only lasted about 10 seconds. Alma Center let the air out of Mercer-Butternut's bal- loon on the ensuing kickoff by returning it 65 yards for a touch- down and running in the two- point conversion to tie the game at 8-8. He has completed 87 marathons and many other races since a fateful day in 1991. Juntunen had received his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Michigan Tech and joined the U.S. Air Force as an officer in 1986. He was on active duty but home on leave between assignments at Malmstrom Airbase in Montana and Wright Airbase in Ohio. He was sawing off a branch when he fell 30 feet from the tree. The diagnosis: He was a T 7/8 com- plete paraplegic. He did his rehabilita- tion at the VA Spinal Cord Injury Unit in Milwaukee. That day in 1991 changed Juntunen’s life forever, but he was determined it would not change him. He had always been active, running marathons and decided he would “figure out a way to keep doing it.” Just prior to the accident he had completed the 100- mile Western States Race. Adaptive technology was the answer. He would “figure it out and do it.” Juntunen completed that first marathon, and 86 more, on wheels specifically designed for it. In August, he won the handcycle divi- sion of the Paavo Nurmi Marathon in Hurley, Wis., for the 11th time since 1998. Before that, he won the wheelchair division four times, from 1993 to 1996. But his determination to be active did not stop there. He is nearing his goal to be the first paraplegic to kayak all around Lake Superior.
