A STORY OF THE WASHINGTON COUNTY UNORGANIZED TERRITORIES Prepared by John Dudley for Washington County Council of Governments March 2017 The story of the past of any place or people is a history, but this story is so brief and incomplete, I gave the title of “A Story”. Another person could have written quite a different story based on other facts. This story is based on facts collected from various sources and arranged in three ways. Scattered through one will find pictures, mostly old and mostly found in the Alexander- Crawford Historical Society files or with my families’ files. Following this introduction is a series on pictures taken by my great-grandfather, John McAdam Murchie. Next we have a text describing the past by subject. Those subjects are listed at the beginning of that section. The third section is a story told by place. The story of each of the places (32 townships, 3 plantations and a couple of organized towns) is told briefly, but separately. These stories are mostly in phrases and in chronological order. The listed landowners are very incomplete and meant only to give names to the larger picture of ownership from 1783. Maps supplement the stories. This paper is a work in progress and likely never will be complete. I have learned much through the research and writing of this story. I know that some errors must have found their way onto these pages and they are my errors. I know that this story is very incomplete. I hope correction and additions will be made. This is not my story, it is our story and I have made my words available now so they may be used in the Prospective Planning process. -

Jacobson Department ofB otany and Plant Pathology Institute for Quaternary Studies University of Maine Orono, Maine 04469 ABSTRACT Planimetry studies of maps of coastal geology prepared by the Maine Geological Survey show that over 3000 2 separate tidal marshes, encompassing approximately 79 km , lie along the coast of Maine. The distribution of tidal marshes as well as their size and vegetation are shown to be related to geologic setting, sediment supply, and developmental history, all of which vary greatly along the 5970 km long coast. Systematic surveys of vegetation in 18 marshes reveal much variability in species composition, species richness, and zonation patterns. Species composition is influenced by freshwater input. Species richness is higher in older marshes situated in stable geologic settings. Zonation patterns represent a transition between those of southern New England and those of the Bay of Fundy region. INTRODUCTION Salt marshes of the eastern seaboard of North America can a/ternijlora Loisel., Spartina patens, (Ait.) Muhl., and Juncus be separated into three types that are named for the region in balticus Willd. are the dominant plant species in those Bay of which they occur: Bay of Fundy-type, New England-type, and Fundy marshes. Atlantic Coastal Plain-type (Johnson, 1925; Chapman, 1974; New England-type salt marshes, on the other hand, are Frey and Basan, 1978). Bay of Fundy-type marshes are closely predominantly high-marsh meadow, with low-marsh plants oc associated with estuarine clay flats. -

For safety reasons, the recipients will not keep the cane but will receive a pin and a framed certificate, which they will keep, stating that they are a recipient of the cane. -

THE FIRST NAVAL BATTLE OF THE REVOLUTION AT MACHIAS, MAINE JUNE 1775. BY HON. GEORGE F. TALBOT, OF PORTLAND* The British invasion came in conflict with the aroused national feeling at Machias just as it did at Lexington, and Concord, and Bunker Hill. The people of Machias of 1775 were Yankees of the Yankees. They belonged to Massachusetts, and believed in Massachusetts politics and Massachusetts religion, just as they have till to-day. They entered enthusiastically and unanimously into the quarrel of their native State, and if Massachusetts was going to war with George III, they were going to war with him without one thought of the chances, and without waiting to know whether another colony or another man was likely to back them. When the American Revolution broke out, about eighty families made their home in the old town of Machias. With them the first consideration had been, not that proximity so convenient for schools, for social visiting and easy communication which roads and sidewalks afford, but a good site and plenty of land, which should give a homestead for themselves and their posterity. So with their 250-acre first division lots they occupied both banks of the river, from the sea inland, and of its branches — East, West and Middle rivers. The sixteen seven-acre lots of the first mill owners made the nucleus of the village. Two coasters had lately gone in from Boston. Captain Ichabod Jones, who owned the vessels, wanted to extricate his family and house hold effects, as well as his vessels from Boston, and he could only do this by agreeing to take back the lumber for which the military authorities were to pay, there being then no other market for it. -

Multimodal Six-Year Transportation Capital Improvement Plan State Fiscal Years 2010-2015 April 29, 2009 The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) is pleased to present this Six-Year Transportation Improvement Plan (Six-Year Plan) for state fiscal years 2010-2015. It discusses how MaineDOT anticipates applying projected capital transportation resources to implement Connecting Maine, MaineDOT’s long-range plan, available at www.mainedot.gov. It is also a resource for the public, municipalities, MaineDOT staff, and other transportation stakeholders. The Six-Year Plan offers an opportunity for expanded public involvement both in project selection and in a project’s scope of work. By providing an indication of planned transportation improvements, it represents an opportunity for early coordination with other investments, such as utilities or municipal revitalization projects. This Six-Year Plan also presents a policy for better-incorporating congressionally designated funding, such as High Priority Projects or earmarks, into MaineDOT’s planning process. This Six-Year Plan is directly related to MaineDOT’s mission, “to responsibly provide a safe, efficient, and reliable transportation system that supports economic opportunity and quality of life.” It continues MaineDOT’s commitment to developing and managing a multimodal transportation system, while addressing the growing needs of Maine’s bridges and highways. In preparation for this plan, MaineDOT contacted Maine municipalities, Metropolitan Planning Organizations, Indian Nations and Tribes, and County Commissioners for Unorganized Territories, for project priorities. Maine’s Regional Planning Councils (RCs) also provided significant input for this document, including providing comments on early draft project listings. The primary difference between this Six-Year Plan and prior mid-range planning documents is that this plan includes a broader type of projects, plus Parts A and B. -
