James Joseph Croce (January 10, 1943 – September 20, 1973) was an American folk and rock singer-songwriter. Between 1966 and 1973, Croce released five studio albums and numerous singles. He was killed, along with five others, in a plane crash on September 20, 1973, at the height of his popularity. His first two albums were commercial flops, failing to chart or produce any hit singles, and he took a series of odd jobs to pay bills while continuing to write, record, and play gigs. After starting a partnership with songwriter and guitarist, Maury Muehleisen, his fortunes turned in the early 1970s. His breakthrough came in 1972; his third album You Don't Mess Around with Jim produced three charting singles, including "Time in a Bottle", which reached No. 1 after his death. The followup album, Life and Times contained the song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", which was the only No. 1 hit he had during his lifetime. The day before the lead single to his fourth album, I Got a Name, was released, Croce and Muehleisen were killed. His music continued to chart throughout the 1970s following his death. His wife, Ingrid Croce, was his early songwriting partner and she continued to write and record after his death, and his son A. J. Croce himself became a singer-songwriter in the 1990s. Jim Croce - The Definitive Croce (2015) Artist : Jim Croce Title : The Definitive Croce Year Of Release : 2015; 2017 Label : R2M Genre : Folk, Classic rock, Singer-songwriter Quality : FLAC (tracks) Total Time : 1:34:27 Total Size : 556 MB WebSite : Album Preview. Jim Croce was a supremely gifted singer-songwriter who, in the space of little more than a couple of years, released three big-selling albums. Tragically his life was cut short by a plane crash in September 1973 when was just 30 years old and at the peak of his career. He left behind a small but important body of work that sounds as fresh and vibrant now as when it was recorded. There’s genuine character, warmth, and sincerity in these songs. His best loved songs are all included on this 2CD set including ‘Time In A Bottle’, ‘Operator’ and ‘I’ll Have To Say I Love You In A Song’. Tracklist: 01. Jim Croce - Time In a Bottle (2:26) 02. Though the band was not a huge commercial success, except in the Northeast Ohio area, the fame garnered by guitarist Joe Walsh has since made the group more notable. Kent, Ohio was where they made their name The original band members were drummer Jimmy Fox, bassist Tom Kriss, guitarist Ronnie Silverman, keyboardist Phil Giallombardo, and guitarist Greg Grandillo, who was quickly replaced by Dennis Chandler. Bill Jeric replaced Silverman when he entered the service. After Chandler left, the group featured Glen Schwartz. Unfortunately, none of the above lineups ever officially released any material. In January 1968, Joe Walsh replaced Schwartz after he had left the band the previous month to move to California, where he ended up forming Pacific Gas & Electric. The band continued as a five piece for a short time until Phil Giallombardo lost interest and left to become involved in other pursuits. Jeric and Walsh worked together on guitar parts, but Jeric ended up leaving as well in the spring of 1968. He was then replaced by Ronnie Silverman, who had been discharged from the service. In May 1968, the group played a concert in Detroit at Motown's Grande Ballroom opening for Cream. At the last minute, Silverman informed the others that he would not be joining them at the show.

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: SELECTED WORKS OF COMPOSERS ASSOCIATED WITH HOWARD UNIVERSITY Guericke Christopher Royal, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2018 Dissertation directed by: Professor Chris Gekker School of Music Throughout its over 100 year history, Howard University has produced and attracted many talented composers of many musical genres. Limiting this project to any one genre or focus would have lessened the overall impact of the music they created and the inspiration that has been a lauded part of the institution. The project will demonstrate the various harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and emotional contributions of the selected composers through interpretation of their music on the trumpet. Composers have been connected to the university in three general ways: as students, alumni and faculty; as commissioned artists; and through the performance of their works by notable performers associated with Howard. The pieces selected for this project exemplify a wide range of musical expressions and compositional techniques, and hopefully have been presented in a way that allows the emotional impact of each piece to resonate in a unique fashion. The selected works tended to fall into the categories of A. Trumpet and Brass Works B. Spirituals/ Meditational/ Religious Works C. Popular and Jazz Pieces D. Organ or other Instrumental Works E. Works of Historical Reference or Significance In some cases, certain pieces may be categorized across multiple categories (e.g. an organ piece based on religious material). As this was also a recording project, great care was taken during the recording process to capture as much emotional content as possible through stereo microphone techniques and the use of high quality equipment.

  • The Twenty Greatest Music Concerts I've Ever Seen
THE TWENTY GREATEST MUSIC CONCERTS I'VE EVER SEEN Whew, I'm done. Let me remind everyone how this worked. I would go through my Ipod in that weird Ipod alphabetical order and when I would come upon an artist that I have seen live, I would replay that concert in my head. (BTW, since this segment started I no longer even have an ipod. All my music is on my laptop and phone now.) The number you see at the end of the concert description is the number of times I have seen that artist live. If it was multiple times, I would do my best to describe the one concert that I considered to be their best. If no number appears, it means I only saw that artist once. Mind you, I have seen many artists live that I do not have a song by on my Ipod. That artist is not represented here. So although the final number of concerts I have seen came to 828 concerts (wow, 828!), the number is actually higher. And there are "bar" bands and artists (like LeCompt and Sam Butera, for example) where I have seen them perform hundreds of sets, but I counted those as "one," although I have seen Lecompt in "concert" also. Any show you see with the four stars (****) means they came damn close to being one of the Top Twenty, but they fell just short. So here's the Twenty. Enjoy and thanks so much for all of your input. And don't sue me if I have a date wrong here and there.

Our apartment, across from Rittenhouse Square, was near the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Liberty Bell, Theaters, Symphony, Restaurants, The Latin Casino, small folk clubs and Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. The excitement of the city, its people, food and music were my inspiration and motivation to pioneer the growth of San Diego’s downtown community—especially the Gaslamp Quarter. Starting when I was eight years old, I worked at my Grandmother Mary’s dress store in South Philadelphia. After school I helped the seamstresses sew and steam clothes, I sat by the cash register and watched my grandmother collect the money, and I happily assisted in the selection of the latest fashions on our buying trips to New York City. My mother Shirley, "The Magic Lady” played piano on her own local television show. In addition to being young, sexy and glamorous, she had this wonderful passion for cooking amazing meals and throwing spectacular parties at the drop of a hat. I learned to cook with her and started singing in local Ingrid & her twin sister Phyllis. clubs and on television by the time I was ten. My father, Sidney Jacobson was a general practitioner with his medical office in our home. • THE SONGWRITER: ADAPTING to the 60'S & 70'S
6 THE SONGWRITER: ADAPTING TO THE 60's & 70's Frank Mayo The intention of the songwriter changed dramatically from the 1960's to and through the 1970's. The internal and ex- ternal struggles of America during these two decades played a key role in motivating the songwriter to not only resound his message, but to also find that formula for success--the hit song! It would seem imperative to chronologically review the attitudenal changes of Americans during these twenty years, and even more imperative to start with and note the significance of the Kennedy administration and assassination. Althqugh the threat and influence of Communism pre-occupied the fears of many Americans--the effects of McCarthyism still lingering-- the country felt relatively secure under its leader. Information gathered by the Gallup Poll during the early. sixties revealed an almost naive outlook that Americans had concerning the future. The results of a poll released August 29, 1962 indicat- ed that 55% of the people polled believed that life would get better as the sixties progressed; 69% believed that there would be no serious racial trouble in the succeeding two or three years. 1 There was virtually no discussion of the Viet Nam cirsis, and the leadership of John Kennedy and the Democrats remained convincingly popular throughout the President's short lived administration. 7 However, when President Kennedy died on November 22, 1963, so died with him the concepts of Idealism and Nationalism that were known prior. The country was marked for change--radical change. Again, information gathered by opinion polls throughout the remainder of the decade reflected- a dramatic change in the attitudes of Americans.
