ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: SELECTED WORKS OF COMPOSERS ASSOCIATED WITH HOWARD UNIVERSITY Guericke Christopher Royal, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2018 Dissertation directed by: Professor Chris Gekker School of Music Throughout its over 100 year history, Howard University has produced and attracted many talented composers of many musical genres. Limiting this project to any one genre or focus would have lessened the overall impact of the music they created and the inspiration that has been a lauded part of the institution. The project will demonstrate the various harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and emotional contributions of the selected composers through interpretation of their music on the trumpet. Composers have been connected to the university in three general ways: as students, alumni and faculty; as commissioned artists; and through the performance of their works by notable performers associated with Howard. The pieces selected for this project exemplify a wide range of musical expressions and compositional techniques, and hopefully have been presented in a way that allows the emotional impact of each piece to resonate in a unique fashion. The selected works tended to fall into the categories of A. Trumpet and Brass Works B. Spirituals/ Meditational/ Religious Works C. Popular and Jazz Pieces D. Organ or other Instrumental Works E. Works of Historical Reference or Significance In some cases, certain pieces may be categorized across multiple categories (e.g. an organ piece based on religious material). As this was also a recording project, great care was taken during the recording process to capture as much emotional content as possible through stereo microphone techniques and the use of high quality equipment. -

The Twenty Greatest Music Concerts I've Ever Seen
THE TWENTY GREATEST MUSIC CONCERTS I'VE EVER SEEN Whew, I'm done. Let me remind everyone how this worked. I would go through my Ipod in that weird Ipod alphabetical order and when I would come upon an artist that I have seen live, I would replay that concert in my head. (BTW, since this segment started I no longer even have an ipod. All my music is on my laptop and phone now.) The number you see at the end of the concert description is the number of times I have seen that artist live. If it was multiple times, I would do my best to describe the one concert that I considered to be their best. If no number appears, it means I only saw that artist once. Mind you, I have seen many artists live that I do not have a song by on my Ipod. That artist is not represented here. So although the final number of concerts I have seen came to 828 concerts (wow, 828!), the number is actually higher. And there are "bar" bands and artists (like LeCompt and Sam Butera, for example) where I have seen them perform hundreds of sets, but I counted those as "one," although I have seen Lecompt in "concert" also. Any show you see with the four stars (****) means they came damn close to being one of the Top Twenty, but they fell just short. So here's the Twenty. Enjoy and thanks so much for all of your input. And don't sue me if I have a date wrong here and there. -

The Cinematic Worlds of Michael Jackson
MA 330.004 / MA430.005 /AMST 341.002 Fall 2016 Revised: 10-7-16 The Cinematic Worlds of Michael Jackson Course Description: From his early years as a child star on the Chitlin’ Circuit and at Motown Records, through the concert rehearsal documentary This is It (released shortly after his death in 2009), Michael Jackson left a rich legacy of recorded music, televised performances, and short films (a description he preferred to “music video”). In this course we’ll look at Jackson’s artistic work as key to his vast influence on popular culture over the past 50 years. While we will emphasize the short films he starred in (of which Thriller is perhaps the most famous), we will also listen to his music, view his concert footage and TV appearances (including some rare interviews) and explore the few feature films in which he appeared as an actor/singer/dancer (The Wiz, Moonwalker). We’ll read from a growing body of scholarly writing on Jackson’s cultural significance, noting the ways he drew from a very diverse performance and musical traditions—including minstrelsy, the work of dance/choreography pioneers like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, and soul/funk legends like James Brown and Jackie Wilson—to craft a style uniquely his own. Crucially, we will ask how Jackson’s shifting public persona destabilize categories of gender, sexuality, and race----in a manner that was very different from his contemporaries: notably, the recently-deceased David Bowie and Prince. Elevated to superstardom and then made an object of the voracious cultural appetite for scandal, Michael Jackson is now increasingly regarded as a singularly influential figure in the history of popular music and culture. -

Ingrid Croce http://www.croces.com/ingrid/autobiography.shtml Autobiography Thyme In A Bottle Cookbook SD Restaurant Cookbook San Diego Restaurant Week Appearances Growing Up Media When I grew up in Philadelphia, people were as passionate about Sinatra and linguini as Photo Gallery they were about politics and religion. Our apartment, across from Rittenhouse Square, was near the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Liberty Bell, Theaters, Symphony, Restaurants, The Latin Casino, small folk clubs and Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. The excitement of the city, its people, food and music were my inspiration and motivation to pioneer the growth of San Diego’s downtown community—especially the Gaslamp Quarter. Starting when I was eight years old, I worked at my Grandmother Mary’s dress store in South Philadelphia. After school I helped the seamstresses sew and steam clothes, I sat by the cash register and watched my grandmother collect the money, and I happily assisted in the selection of the latest fashions on our buying trips to New York City. My mother Shirley, "The Magic Lady” played piano on her own local television show. In addition to being young, sexy and glamorous, she had this wonderful passion for cooking amazing meals and throwing spectacular parties at the drop of a hat. I learned to cook with her and started singing in local Ingrid & her twin sister Phyllis. clubs and on television by the time I was ten. My father, Sidney Jacobson was a general practitioner with his medical office in our home. By the age of fifteen I was employed as the “junior art therapist” assisting my dad at the University of Pennsylvania where he did his residency and began his psychiatric practice.
